The linux part is cringe. Just move if you don’t want to use apple’s os

[–] LeTak@lemm.ee 11 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

https://ravynos.com/ Switch to MacOS without Apple when it is finally released.

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 3 points 1 hour ago

Is this another ReactOS situation, or does this have a chance to actually become usable as a daily driver?

Honestly - this is from a playbook used by every autocratic administration: “Take the attention away from the more important things”. Seen it in EU constantly: Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, etc. So sure, report it, but be aware this is a charade.

[–] Petter1@lemm.ee 3 points 1 hour ago

It is the main thing Trump is good at:

Creating some drama/infuriation to keep news noisy in order to hide his fascist dictator playbook moves

[–] neoscaler@feddit.org 29 points 6 hours ago

Do it. Move to Linux.

[–] jim@piefed.social 50 points 7 hours ago (3 children)

Wrote App Store review, then deleted maps. Installed Organic Maps to replace.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

is there an easy way to export all my map markers from google to organic? I've saved a lot of locations over the years.

[–] tgxn@lemmy.tgxn.net 1 points 1 hour ago

hmm I wondered this too. I have a ton of starred places as well as some custom lists. I wasn't able to find anything to do it, but would also be interested in this.

[–] Itzdestroyed@lemm.ee 15 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Based. Organic maps is a great navigation app. I also like magic earth :)

[–] frank@sopuli.xyz 1 points 23 minutes ago

I've been struggling without public transportation in Organic. It kinda works? Like it shows the path but doesn't actually show the stops or station names

[–] PumpkinEscobar@lemmy.world 17 points 6 hours ago

Also, reporting that Trump Tower (either) should be renamed Mexico Tower feels pretty good.

[–] Soapbox1858@lemm.ee 71 points 8 hours ago (4 children)

I can't be the only one who feels like this is the absolute lowest priority of dumb shit to resist the regime over. It's just filler. Another thing he is doing to flood the zone. But one that really doesn't hurt anything. It's a distraction. Ignore it and focus on the actual damage he is doing.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 3 minutes ago

Exactly. Just use OpenStreetMap and move on. It's still the Gulf of Mexico for me. I use Organic Maps.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago

Yah, it feels like someone tossing a ball behind a dog. "Look over there! Go get it!"

[–] GreatBlueHeron@lemmy.ca 11 points 8 hours ago

I get what you're saying but, as someone observing from outside, stuff like this is all I can do to resist.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (2 children)

Yeah, I mean it's just books those nazis are burning, it doesn't hurt anything, no need to discuss it. /s

US fascists are fucking rewriting the world map and eradicating historical name, I consider it actual damage.

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 15 points 7 hours ago

Actual book burning is the scientific data and articles being purged and saved (for now) by the Internet archive

[–] orgrinrt@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (1 children)

To be fair, the entire history of humanity is full of exactly that. These are mostly just aimed at and recognized by the US. Same as Russia currently renaming occupied villages. Nobody else recognizes those, it’s just not that special or important at this point, with all of the other shit going on.

Ultimately, the names of places change. All the time. And will continue to change. It’s just what we do as humans. Somebody uses force and swings their dick around and locally others have to either accept it, silently or whining, or punch the fucker. Elsewhere people fight similar fights and care very little about the other dickswingers far away.

[–] Petter1@lemm.ee 1 points 1 hour ago

But google shows this imaginary trump name around the globe, not just in America. That is different to how google handles the fantasy names for lands China and Russia claim they are theirs..

[–] Shardikprime@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

The stunlock continues

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 13 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

~~lol, the iOS app won’t let me submit a ‘name is wrong’ report.~~

I’m dumb

[–] bartleby1@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

It won’t let you send until you actually change the name lol

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 4 points 7 hours ago

Ah that was not immediately apparent lol I’m silly

[–] sic_semper_tyrannis 14 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

You should abandon Apple for Linux anyways. Apple doesn't care about you, your privacy, or anything but them making more money, from you. This has been proven time and time again by evidence and whistleblowers.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 1 points 3 hours ago

Eh, out of all my own traffic I’ve MITM’d it’s mostly been third-party SDKs in apps doing creepy shit.

Down to hate on Gulf of America but when it comes to privacy it’s debatable.

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 19 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Shout out to the menial workers at Apple Maps who are going to have a crap day at work tomorrow because of the thing their boss made them do, so they don't get fired and replaced by someone else who would do it.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 4 hours ago

That's why they made Apple intelligence so minded numbingly stupid. Job security. If it were capable Apple management would have replaced everyone.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 10 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

It says my report is “in review” and I’ll be notified when they review it.

I wonder how that will go, and how fast.

I assume they have mechanisms to just push mass reports into a black hole. Or similar.

[–] yonder@sh.itjust.works 13 points 9 hours ago

Don't worry. They can send the reports to /dev/null where they will be read by Tim Apple himself when he checks it.

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 20 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

That’s odd; my Apple Maps says “Gulf of Mexico” and searching for “Gulf of America” shows 0 results.

Unlike Google Maps/Earth….

[–] heavydust@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

Just wait, they said they would enable it globally soon enough.

[–] cmnybo@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

You have to access it from a US IP address to get the new name.

[–] brewery@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

From a UK or German IP address, Google maps has it as Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).

We're being dragged into this mess so will look to report it

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Irrelevant: Scared me for a sec, thought I had an IP leak as I VPN to Switzerland but remembered I explicitly allowed Maps to be routed through a US VPN.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 6 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

I don't really know how to feel about this.

Was it decreed by an absolute narcissist for no reason other than the kind of blatant arrogance Americans are notorious for? Absolutely.

Was it also completely legal? As far as I can tell. It's not really these companies' place to resist map name changes, it's the citizens' and our representatives'.

Does it have anything at all to do with fascism? No.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 4 hours ago

All he can dictate is what official American maps call it. But he can't make everyone else rename it, Apple and Google did not need to rename it they could have ignored him who has no legal power to do anything to them but they are kissing his bronzed arse so of course they did.

[–] ThisIsNotHim@sopuli.xyz 3 points 7 hours ago

At the same time it's the map's job to describe the world. Even for something like nation states where there's an official name, the map uses the common name. Our maps say France, not French Republic.

Changing the displayed name for a body of water shared by several nations doesn't make much sense, especially when the common name has yet to follow.

At least that's from the perspective of one of the goals the map ostensibly wants to serve.

I'm going to start calling it the United States of America of Mexico and sometimes Canada.

[–] bufalo1973@lemm.ee 1 points 1 hour ago

The full name of Mexico is "Mexican United States". Not joking.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 hours ago

I use Naziland

[–] RunningInRVA@lemmy.world 14 points 11 hours ago

A waste of our time for sure, but I did it as well.

[–] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Its only for US users, no worry ;) hehe

[–] dovahking@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Not for long. I'm literally on the other side of world.

[–] ZephyrXero@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

I just sent one in to Google Maps. Clearly it must be a bug. No such place exists
