meh @ this in general, if anyone is gonna pirate ps5 games, it's going to be through software hacks rather than hardware shenanigans. Though, those same software hacks are what will eventually make the preservation angle a bit of a moot point.

It absolutely puts a shelf-life on how long a ps5 with an optional blu-ray drive will last for playing physical media, but it also probably doesn't matter much unless it's 2039 and you are dead-set on playing Demon's Souls via a physical disk

That far into the future, physical PS5s will either be the OG version with disc, or one that is already paired.

You only need validation on initial setup.

I think the concern here is about what happens once they stop making official disk drives and the existing ones break. Technologically, I could connect a generic bluray drive to a PS5, but this hardware DRM prevents that.

I'm sure there will be workarounds, they're just going to be annoying.

That far in the future we'll just use emulation. See Sega Genesis/Sega CD or the NEC TurboGrafx/CD.

Blu Ray liscencing costs money. You need internet connection for the license. Why would Sony pay for unused licenses? A one time connection requirement.
