They'll resume at 2:15 ET

I really don't understand this bit:

“Did you ever ask President Trump to pardon you while he was in the White House?” Habba asked.

“No,” Cohen said.

“He didn’t pardon you, did he?”

“No,” Cohen replied with force.

First of all, why would he need a pardon? He was doing crimes for trump. How does this help trump? Second, trump already lost, they're just figuring out the amount, the judge isn't going to be swayed by these tactics. I guess it's for soundbites for his followers?

Don’t underestimate the sheer stupidity of those in trump’s orbit. This fuckwit probably thinks he’s gonna get paid, too. If he didn’t already demand a retainer of a few mil.

Habba is a woman, but yeah.

[-] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

lol, even better. We know how respectful Trump is of women.

If he never got a pardon the theory is that he was just doing the crimes of his own accord, so Trump shouldn't be responsible for them.

So trump has no idea what his 2 top accountants were doing and he signed all of the papers saying he did, lol. His lawyers must not have anything as a defense if that's the basis.

Regardless, he was found guilty so we'll see.

"Your honor, it's a well-known fact that my defendant is illiterate. He trusted these snakes to read the documents to him, and then he would sign. They clearly misrepresented the contents verbally."

And no one would be shocked.

[-] Wrench@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

"No! Of course not. I asked for a pardon while we were golfing."

Habba is completely out of her depth.

I truly wish this one was televised, such a train wreck on their part. Cohen added some funny moments too, but to see trump in court getting clobbered would be nice.

Lmao, Trump got fined $10,000 on the spot for violating his gag order about shit talking the court staff. A small slap on the wrist, but I love the immediate consequence.

[-] Spacebar@lemmy.world 9 points 8 months ago

To avoid a successful appeal, the judge has to escalate the fines. Trump will keep violating the order and the fines are going to start going up real fast.

[-] agent_flounder@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Fines should be doubled at each infraction lol

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 4 points 8 months ago

They are. The last one was $5000.

[-] Nougat@kbin.social 2 points 8 months ago

"Oh no! I've been charged increasingly large fines that I will never pay!"

[-] jasondj@ttrpg.network 1 points 8 months ago

Donald Trump, you are fined 1 credit for a violation of the verbal morality statute.

[-] NixDev@programming.dev 2 points 8 months ago

What's the fine if you don't know how to use the 3 shells?

[-] Nougat@kbin.social 1 points 8 months ago

If the punishment is a fine, it's only illegal for poor people.

Besides that, he's never going to pay any of those fines anyway. He's going to waste the court's time and resources with appeals and then just not pay anyway. What are they going to do, garnish his wages?

[-] Deconceptualist@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago

I think eventually (like well after all appeals are final) the court can order officers to seize property if fines go unpaid long enough. Not sure the legal terms, maybe some kind of asset forfeiture.

This is funny:

Trump fined $10,000 for disparaging comment about judge's law clerk

Judge Arthur Engoron has fined Trump $10,000 after holding a brief hearing in which he called the ex-president to testify about his possible violation of a gag order this morning. Engoron previously ordered Trump not to make disparaging comments about his staff; in commentary this morning, Trump appeared to make one such statement about Engoron’s law clerk.

Trump denied that he was speaking about Engoron’s clerk, and insisted he was speaking about Michael Cohen. Engoron disagreed.

“As the trier of fact I find that the witness is not credible,” Engoron said in imposing the fine.

To be fair, he is.
