Hey, I am just wondering where the conversation happens for Lemmy development, I would assume its on lemmy somewhere but I can't find it. Is there a /c/lemmydev or /c/meta ?

There's a guide to new contributors. It has a link to a Matrix chat where communication happens.

Hmm getting not found for the matrix room in there, maybe out of date or not federated?

[–] BenDoubleU@lemmy.radio 5 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

The link for the main lemmy dev chats can be found in the readme.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy

This should be the matrix link: https://matrix.to/#/#lemmy-space:matrix.org

Hmm, getting the same alias not found error. Self hosting matrix has been hard for me 😓

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

It seems to exist for me. I didn't try to join but it seems to exist:

Interestingly it seems to be a room about ActivityPub not Lemmy. I'd probably join that room and then ask there. The lead devs are definitely active on Matrix so that's where I'd head if I wanted to contribute.

I'm running conduwuit on docker but maybe that's the problem. Constant issues with joining certain rooms. Just says room not found. Unless matrix doesn't work via cloudflare tunnels??

[–] BenDoubleU@lemmy.radio 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Also note that these are spaces and not rooms. They work just a bit different depending on your client.

[–] clove@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 hours ago

Yeah, other spaces work just fine. But half of the rest don't. Seems to be an issue witg my server for some reason.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

It might need some special setup? Here's a guide to setting up from a couple of years ago (hopefully not too far out of date): https://appelman.se/matrix-on-cloudflare

I haven't done it myself (using Matrix.Org like a pleb) so can't give any advice.

[–] clove@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Did use that as reference. And even federation tester for matrix shows everything working. At this point just think condwuit might be the source of the issue. Next weekend I'll try making a new server with good ol reliable.

Lemmy.ml is the instance run by the developers. Pretty sure there are some discussions there.
Other than that, GitHub issues. I'm surprised they haven't enabled GitHub discussions.

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

For new people, please note that lemmy.ml is also a marxist-leninist instance (hence the "ml") and tends to be the home of some more abrasive users of lemmy. Unless you're into that philosophy I'd reccomend only using it for dev discussion and info on the main Lemmy "project".

Otherwise you're liable to get shit on for uttering more "mainstream leftist" views because their userbase doesn't think you're left enough. That makes it sound worse than it is, but there are some users who have given up on Lemmy because of dogpiling by ml users.

[–] AtHeartEngineer@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Ok. I was hoping to talk to them about contributing some specific features to help fight against bots and include some privacy tech, but I don't have the mental bandwidth for drama.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Probably fine as long as you don't talk about politics or anything related to China or other "socialist" countries. But yeah I get the feeling.

Someday I hope someone else will be running this project, or we all end up shifting to another federated software like PieFed or Mbin. You could consider contributing to those projects instead if you are wary of the lemmy devs--they're all interoperable. But the idea behind the fediverse and open source software is that even the devs will have limited power, so I think we're still better off than on Reddit, despite these issues.

Warning people to stay inside their bubbles to avoid the awful possibility of reading things they disagree with. A nice metaphor for our times.

Sometimes you want to just go to the grocery store without getting pummeled by dodgeballs

I can see why you would say this but the real issue in my opinion is not the annoying users, but the extremely intolerant mods and admins who will remove any factual information that is inconvenient to their narratives and ban you for trivial infractions. Even mild criticism or discussion of historical facts around the CPC or Hamas will result in an immediate ban, sometimes from the entire instance. It's not possible to have healthy discussions on these instances.

I don't mind discussing those ideas elsewhere but it simply can't happen on Lemmy.ml due to the restrictive moderation.
