I went there a few years ago and I highly recommend it. Beautiful castle and views. Just a heads up but that road starts at the bottom of the mountain and it’s a long hike up. So they have a bus if you need to take it
Castles
A place to share cool castles!
Post images or any other content relating to castles, châteaux, palaces, towers, keeps, fortresses, and follies. The following content is encouraged but not required:
- Castle name in native language (English name) - location [include country and region, if not city/town]
- Best website (official or otherwise)
- Some sort of map link
- Visitation details: open/closed to public, closed but technically reachable, tours?, etc.
- History: Whatever can be briefly copy-pasted
More than just images are welcome. Only real rule is that content must refer to a real-life structure, so please no fantasy/fictional castles! Reasonable exceptions include media showcasing period life and technology that somehow relates to castles.
I remember the first time I saw a picture of this castle. How awe inspired I was, thinking about the rich history it must have
Medieval battles, royalty intrigue, the noble lineage of kings and queens past who once called this castle home
I dove into researching the castle and immediately saw that it wasn't completed until over 20 years after the US civil war as a vanity project for a king that didn't live to see it completed
It's just a really pretty castle, and that's enough
One might argue, it is still not completed. Ludwig II ran out of money and the interior rooms aren't all finished, you just get to see the ones that are, during the tour.
There are more spectacular castles to visit, for example Ludwig's other projects Schloss Herrenchiemsee and especially Schloss Linderhof (which he actually finished), but Neuschwanstein probably has the best landscape surrounding it. So I'd say the best way to enjoy it, is to look at it from the outside. (The interior tours are also pretty rushed, in my opinion)
Yeah; it's almost like a movie set. A lot of the interior was never realised after the original vision, and is now used mainly for exhibits.
If you want the real deal. The closest thing to a fairytale castle i have ever visited is Burg Eltz beside the Mosel river.
Fun sidenote: The Neuschwanstein castle banquet hall was intentionally copied from the banquet hall at the Wartburg by Eisenach..
...i visited fourty years ago; it was pretty lush...
I actually just finished putting together a jigsaw puzzle featuring this castle a couple days ago! It was missing a piece but fortunately not in a super distracting area :)
Now that I’ve found it I cannot stop seeing it
I love jigsaw puzzles! Unfortunately so does my cat which prevents me from ever getting to do them
Took me a minute to find it.
It's a pretty bad photograph (further compressed upon uploading too) with a blue tabletop that is probably helping it blend in a bit.
No spoilers!
Visited in 2016. It's worth seeing once despite being a "new" castle.
We got really lucky. It was snowing while we were there, but the trees had started showing green already. As we were leaving, the skies cleared up. It was so beautiful with the snow, the green trees, and the blue sky.
Man that was a great trip. 2 weeks touring Germany.
I love this castle! Visited it once in the 90s.
It's really gorgeous, but I was so disappointed to hear that most of the rooms were closed off and never used.
Wow, what lighting mod did they use to smooth those shadows out?
I'm just kidding. Real life hasn't gotten a graphics patch in at least the last 13 billion years.
No, but lense filters and post processing can make photos look more realistic than real life
Whoever had that built must have felt so good about himself for his kickass castle
You can read more about him on wikipedia:
Ludwig ascended to the throne in 1864 at the age of 18 but increasingly withdrew from day-to-day affairs of state in favour of extravagant artistic and architectural projects. He commissioned the construction of lavish palaces: Neuschwanstein Castle, [...]
So yes, he did feel good about his kickass castle.
I be the wifi is shit
Yes but that's because it's Germany, not because it's a castle.
