Fucking do it. Those apps are hot air. No one needs them. There's no problem replacing them.

How do we tariff 'free' apps like Facebook and Instagram?

[–] Eatspancakes84@lemmy.world 23 points 4 hours ago

Tariff the advertisers. Also, strictly enforce GDPR.

"Straight for the gonads", but in tech oligarchy speak is "straight for the ad revenue".

Yes!!! I’ve been wanting this! Let’s put costs on all the US apps and sites - that way a lot of Europeans will actually start using the amazing European alternatives that we already have, keeping our money in Europe for our own companies to invest with, to become even greater! I’m all in! 💪🏻

[–] RedPostItNote@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Americans would love some Elon and other scumbag free alternatives beyond what we have now.

[–] Redditsux@lemmy.world 90 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

LOL Trump wanted to keep this "trade war" to goods only. He never mentioned the surplus US has in services trade. This will really hurt US below the belt.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 53 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

As an American, I'm here for it, go EU go! Make it hurt!

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago
[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world -2 points 3 hours ago (3 children)

I don't get it. Why do Americans want to hurt themselves so badly? Shooting yourself in the foot? "Nah men, that's for children." Russian roulette? "Boooring, why just 1 bullet in the chamber when you can do 6 instead."

It's so obvious how your current president with his clown army is set to destroy the country yet the American people were all for it and voted him back, after a horrible first term. Everyone is in support of mega corps and the ultra rich and don't care it will come out of their own pocket.

And now you're in support of the EU to ban American services, something which would hurt the country and everyone in it, making it harder for you to get a job, pay for groceries, get proper health care and education, waving away your human rights and freedom of expression.

I'm a European, to me it looks like the movie Idiocracy was an understatement when I look at the US. It's a country filled with masochist toddlers who argue about how big their graves should be while digging those themselves with lightning speed.

I get it, you're unhappy with the current situation, but supporting the ones who will hurt you, is going to hurt you. If I was in your situation I'd say "yeah EU, I get it, but it will be at the cost of the American people because those mega corps will take their loss out of our paychecks and welfare."

But you do you! Good luck mate!

So you’re now mad at people for realizing they’re the baddie and wanting change?

What don’t you get? America runs on money. Maybe you should trust us when we say we deserve something. We know what makes these beasts wail

[–] dickalan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

You sound kind of stuck up

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Because idiots clearly need to feel pain in order to leave this cult.

[–] thoralf@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 16 hours ago

Please, finally do that!

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 56 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

If this raises prices of Netflix, Gamepass, ... I will immediately cancel them rather than pay the hike.

[–] BlushedPotatoPlayers@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 hours ago

What about Steam?

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 48 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

Highly recommend replacing those with a Usenet subscription!

[–] MonkeMischief 18 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

At this point I'm quickly getting to the "...rebellion becomes duty" phase on this issue. Everything is getting so unreasonable.

I'm also just worried about getting served because I forgot to turn on an obfuscation service or something lol...

[–] dickalan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Real debrid. It won’t help you find the content but once you do, it makes getting it practically full proof and so you’ll never get caught and it’s only like four dollars a month so it’s way cheaper than a VPN

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 16 points 18 hours ago

Downloading content is mostly legal around the world. Uploading content is illegal pretty much everywhere.

Usenet just downloads so it’s not as illegal. For torrenting you need a VPN

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 9 points 18 hours ago

Usenet isn't as easy to get caught using as torrents just because of how it works. I don't know enough to explain why, I just know this haha.

[–] Mbourgon@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Come on, guys. You know the first rule of Usenet.

[–] axh@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

I was today's years old (and that is a lot) when I found out Usenet is still alive and can be used to get... Hmmm... Entertainment. Where should I start if I want to get rid of Netflix?

[–] dickalan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Real debrid paired with infuse , You’re only bottleneck is however fast your Internet you are paying for, this works if you have an iPhone and or a Apple TV, but pirate service is still fast and works with whatever device you have

[–] Banana@sh.itjust.works 5 points 17 hours ago

Honestly I'm not the best resource for this information as somebody else set up my account, but I think there's a usenet community on Lemmy!

[–] Marafon@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago

Google "freemediaheckyeah" (idk if can post links to stuff like this on this board, should be the first .net result though)

There is a category for downloads and in that category there is a subsection for Usenet with a guide and additional resources.

Have fun and don't forget to ask the horse what he wants to do.

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Can someone inform my uninformed self what Usenet is useful for

[–] yoshman@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

Sailing the high seas

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 12 hours ago

The US is a failed state and the rest of the world needs to treat it as such

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

I'm sure the EU won't insta-react like a five year old, and if it reacts this is the thing I'm expecting. Smart stuff.

So get your act together EU!!

[–] AbaixoDeCao@lemm.ee 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

The European leaders don't have the balls to impose tariffs on Big Tech!

[–] Suoko@feddit.it 4 points 5 hours ago

If Europeans counterparts to Google, ms and apple existed, yes. They need to be offered companies, which can rely on open source in the end, not just "open source" as an alternative, which is often a mantra here: they understand nothing about tech!
