"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I guess they only meant the piece of paper itself, not what's written on it or what it stands for.

He literally refused to put his hand on the book.

[–] SabinStargem 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I would do the same, but that is because I have developed my own ethical compass that defies Yahweh's authority. In Trump's case, it is because he is an utterly evil fucker, beholden to no being beyond himself.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago (5 children)

You can swear on the book of your choice.

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 day ago

Oh, wow, really.

Officials can swear using any book or document meaningful to them – or none at all.

https://www.freedomforum.org/swear-bible-oath-of-office/

There's also some actually used examples like a stack of banned books, Superman comic book, and even a Dr. Seuss book.

[–] ouRKaoS 6 points 1 day ago

It seems like swearing on the Constitution should be mandatory.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Trump's preferred book might have been too flagrant too soon

[–] SabinStargem 2 points 1 day ago

The Cartoon History of the Universe it is.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

When I get inaugurated, I'll swear on a copy of Naked Lunch.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

we already got the mugwumps in office

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

After Trump, might as well dig up Hogg

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, Trump is pretty incompetent so he probably is operating to the best of his ability.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He's looking out for Nicolas Cage lol

[–] entwine413@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago

He did try to get it moved into the oval office, so you might literally be right.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

He didn't have his hands on the bible, so it didn't count.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Consequences when?

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (3 children)

No fucking shit.

When this is all said and done, if that fat traitor fuck is still alive, he must be dealt with.

[–] mjhelto@lemm.ee 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hopefully, when that day comes, we do what Lincoln didn't do after the Civil War and what Truman didn't do after WW2 and punish those who instated and set this in motion.

Or what Congress didn't do after the business plot of 1933

This could've been said through most of his first term. Then definitely during the furore after the treason stuff and stolen documents debacle. And many other times tbh, yet he still got voted in again.
The orange TurdNugget is a god damned imbecile of the highest order, however no one as the guts to tackle him or take him out. No one.
The American people have been bested by a fucking idiot, and nothing will be done about it.

You are all free to prove me wrong. You won't, but you should.

It's pretty difficult to kill/do harm to a sitting US president. There's an entire agency tasked with nothing but ensuring that their life is never physically threatened. In addition there's probably only about 500,000 people that are physically close enough at any one time. Most people just want to live out their life to the best of their ability. Take care of their kids, spend time with family, enjoy personal activities. Successfully harming the president comes with either a death sentence or life imprisonment. No matter the circumstance. It would set an extraordinarily dangerous precedent if the assailant managed to avoid consequences.

The constitution is the law of the land. Not Trump.

[–] Lon3star@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

He is actively trying to change that

[–] dryfter@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

Laws don't mean shit anymore and stopped doing so when a convicted felon got elected as President. Well it doesn't mean shit for rich people.

[–] mjhelto@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

My hope is that when they finally publicly torch the Constitution, they set themselves on fire!

Democrats: "We wrote a stern letter, what else can we do? We're the opposition party and have no power! 🤡"

[–] CmdrShepard42@lemm.ee 5 points 1 day ago

Remember all those people arguing that Biden couldn't do anything good for the country because "the president doesn't really have much power" yet here we are.

This is the Dems modus operandi to further theirs and Republicans shared adgenda while maintaining the facade of being the opposition.

[–] futatorius@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They never even wrote the fucking letter. Most of them just went and hid.

[–] mjhelto@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

But Schumer said, in a phone interview, that after the 40% or lower approval rating, they sent a stern letter with 8-hard (wtf does that even mean?) questions or some shit. So yeah, they literally wrote a letter to try and thwart fascism.

If the Trump admin isn’t obeying judicial authority, then judicial action wouldn’t be very effective. What they need is a large mass of people to coordinate and assemble. If you’re not providing that, then you’re part of the problem.
