JD Vance attempted a charm offensive on Tuesday, and failed with the charm while succeeding in being offensive.

It happened during an announcement that former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, would be leading a task force for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico next year.

Rather than stoke excitement for a global event that could be a tourism cash cow for North America, Vance decided to take a different approach — and joked about deporting the potential thousands of tourists visiting the U.S. for the occasion.

Not a joke, not a joke.

[–] Saryn@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago (7 children)

I've been to over 50 countries in all seven continents, and I've lived in four of those. Never did I feel anything that I would would describe as fear.

I will be travelling to the US for an exchange program next month. I am afraid. To the point I am actually considering cancelling what could be a career changing opportunity.

[–] TotalCourage007@lemm.ee 15 points 2 days ago

I would consider canceling any dealings with US if said person isn't white, even that is a stretch for this dogshit administration. I hope we see a general protest by making the World Cup barren.

As a sane person I am deeply sorry for any strife our government causes. Do your best to stay safe!

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

You should be concerned, the US government will change your job title to El Salvadorian Detainee whether you want them to or not.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago

My feelings are your feelings... but I am not planning on traveling to the US.

I'm surprised Trump's even fine with hosting the world cup in the first place seeing as every professional footballer is a migrant by definition.

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

it is a money maker considering they don't need to build new stadium or infrastructure. However these things doesn't mean much, I think what he cares about how the final draw up to 1.5 billion viewer.. so if he get to be there handing gold medals or something he will be happy.

Even the fucking Nazis made sure Germany was as hospitable as possible to all visitors in the 1936 Olympics. The blatant Nazi propaganda, however, backfired and many people left with a sour taste in their mouths after the event.

[–] Hikuro93@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ha ha, yes, such a joker that JD. Totally not a cowardly sleazebeg acting as a "good person" and testing the waters on controversial stuff like a certain orange president likes to do... He's learning well.

I really hope this is the World Cup with the least international attendance in recent memory (should really be 0, but that's sadly too unrealistic) . Don't spend your money in the US, if FIFA wants your fan money they should relocate the world cup to somewhere without threats.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 13 points 2 days ago

It's almost cute that you thought he was joking.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

And steal their bike

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who the fuck thought it'd be a good idea to hold the world cup in the US, a country that doesn't even give a fuck about football?

[–] Charlxmagne@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

The same people who thought Qatar was a good host

[–] VampirePenguin@midwest.social 61 points 3 days ago (3 children)

How funny will it be when all of the seats are empty? Americans don't care about soccer, this event will be funded by tourism and now those folks will be opting out. If I were planning this event I'd be livid. Vance, shut your stupid fucking mouth and never speak again as long as you live.

[–] mcv@lemm.ee 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's apparently also in Mexico and Canada, so you can still visit matches there.

Would be funny if the stadiums in Mexico and Canada were chock full while those in the US were half empty. You'd hope they'd finally get the message.

[–] IzzyJ@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

They'd just say "soccer is woke anyway. Football ura" it's a cult and I hate it here

If you go to this you’re a fucking idiot. Not worth being sent to an El Salvador concentration camp just to watch a soccer match. Just watch it on tv.

[–] Zacpod@lemmy.world 46 points 2 days ago (3 children)

People went to Qatar to sit in slave-built stadiums. Don't expect any morals from FIFA fans.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

It didn't directly effect them. They don't give a shit how it was built.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 8 points 2 days ago

Yes, but they didn't have the chance of becoming slaves themselves, so the situation is different.

[–] Red_October@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

No morals, but maybe self preservation isn't too much to expect.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 33 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you support fifa in any way, you’re an idiot. I don’t have much hope that anybody will change their behavior.

I know FIFA is corrupt but does anyone not see how dangerous traveling to the United States currently is?

[–] zqps@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Soccer fans have below average concern for world politics, in my experience.

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 76 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Haha human rights violations are hilarious

This guy can't even pretend to be a normal person.

JD Vance should be deported to space with Elon to mars.

Too many resources. Just put the motherfuckers on a boat, take it to the most remote part of the pacific, and strand it there.

[–] timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They represent who we are. Either fully mask off shitty people or lazy AF who don't care. This is America until we prove otherwise.

Dear Foreigner,

If you are coming to the US for the world cup you are fucking stupid. You're going to spend thousands of your preferred currency to get harassed by Customs and if you fuck up and get arrested for whatever little thing the police that stops you has up his ass that day you run the risk of ending up in South America or Africa but not the part you are from, in a jail somewhere getting fucked.

Unless you are white, if you're white come on over, have a beer. Remember, though, even if you are Spanish, Italian, Greek, or any of those other darkies you gay commie Europeans call white, you are going to get lumped in with the Mexicans, especially if you speak Mexican or eye tie.

Fuck you, countries full,

XOXO JD 😘 🛋😘 Vance XOXO

[–] VitoRobles 57 points 3 days ago (8 children)

Nah we'll arrest random whites too.

Jasmine Mooney was locked up for 11 days, no method of reaching out to the outside world.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 105 points 3 days ago (4 children)

No one in their right mind would compete here you do that.

What, you gonna deport someone because they beat us in gold JD? Fuck.

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 48 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fortunately, if this shit keeps up, there are two other countries where to celebrate matches. Mexico is shaping up nicely for the World Cup, and tourism comes natural to our culture.

[–] tankplanker@lemmy.world 35 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That its being co hosted will backfire on the US. If it was just the US and nobody turned up they can and will blame football for that rather than their own idiocy, but because Mexico and Canada are also hosting matches if they get great attendance then its clearly an issue with the US.

If you want to go, go to the matches in Mexico or Canada, spend your money there.

As long as MAGA policies and the walking farts responsible for them are in place/in charge, I will never again set foot on US soil. There are plenty of other places to visit.

Reminder that every time they say something that causes offense they say it was just a joke.

Narrator: it was not a joke

I would not take such words as "jokes" anymore. I take them as an open and dire warning not to travel to the US until the government has been taken care of.
