Pickled Habaneros (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) by MrJameGumb@lemmy.world to c/foodporn@lemmy.world

These came out amazing! Pickling them takes the harsh edge off the peppers just enough to make them taste really nice! I just tried them on top of a salad and was very happy with how good they were. I just made them last night so I think they will get even better over the next few days!

I got the recipe here, but here's the basics:

Ingredients:

15 habaneros seeds removed, sliced thin

1.5 cups distilled vinegar

0.5 cups water

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

2 cloves garlic

1 teaspoon mustard seed

This recipie is meant to fill a 16oz container

Cut out the stem and remove the seeds, then slice the peppers into thin rings. The original recipie recommends removing ALL of the seeds but I left some in since I like things extra spicy. Peel the garlic cloves and slice them in half. I added a few more cloves than the recipe recommended.

Next bring the vinegar/water mixture to a simmer, then add the sugar and salt and stir to dissolve.

In a jar or other heat proof container add the peppers garlic and mustard seed and pour the liquid over everything until it's completely covered.

Seal the container and let it sit out until it cools to room temperature, then put it in the fridge! Let it sit for a few hours at least before serving, I let these sit overnight

The best container to use would be a mason jar but I didn't have anymore lids and the store didn't have them in stock so I used this Pyrex thing which was fine. Make sure whatever you use is ok to pour boiling liquids into!

If habaneros are too spicy for you this same repicie works great for jalapenos too, which I also made lol

It is very important when handling hot peppers to wear gloves or wash you hands thoroughly.

You need to use a cloth and soap to mechanically rub the oil off your skin.

I'm wearing contacts and I let you imagine what it is like to take off contacts after chopping peppers.

It can stay for hours or even days in fingers. Washing hands with soap by itself doesn't do much to rub off the capsaicin BUT washing hands with oil then soap is like a magic trick. My eyes feel much better now.

Rub your hands with a bit of cooking oil, then wash with soap. It helps a bit.

Very true! I must have washed my hands 5 times and my fingers were still spicy for a few hours

do not pleasure your partner for a full day after doing this

Those would be amazing on pizza.

Yeah with bacon and pineapple! That sounds amazing!

Ah, a fellow pineapple-on-pizza enjoyer. I like the way you think.

It's a highly underrated and unfairly maligned topping

Right?! I immediately thought of this bomb-ass Hawaiian pizza I got at the local brewery restaurant that had caramelized pickled jalapenos on it, how good that was, and how much better pickled caramelized habeneros would be instead of jalapenos 🤤

I enjoy Trader Joe's Hot & Sweet Jalapeños, I'm wondering if making my own would be an interesting project.

Would I just add a bit more sugar or would that mess up the balance?

I'm pretty new to this so I couldn't tell you for sure. The jalapenos with this recipie tasted just a little bit sweet. You could probably add more sugar or add some kind of simple syrup at the end even

Habaneros are love, habaneros are life.

[–] ChapulinColorado@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

You can throw in some this sliced red onions with the habaneros for some nice topping on a sandwich or maybe some tacos.

[–] Geometrinen_Gepardi@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

I do this but simpler. I put the veg in a container, pour a splash of some nice 5% vinegar in and mix it. Couple of hours in room temperature and it's nicely pickled.

[–] CannedYeet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I can only get habaneros in a big bag, so this is perfect
