Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Unpopular, maybe, but I agree with OP. When I finally counted up all the caffeine I was consuming, I found I was over 1500mg/day.

I switched to caffeine-free drinks the next day, and tapered down to 200mg in the mornings.

Apparently, I shouldn't try to explain this to people IRL.

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

And we should just get rid of sex, all insemination should be done in a lab because it's much easier.

[–] pale_tony@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

Here to say that people need to up vote OP more. They actually posted an unpopular opinion.

Just say you don't like coffee and go take your pills mate some of us enjoy the flavor of the beverage

[–] knexcar@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

One important difference about price: my job has free coffee in every break room. They do not offer free caffeine pills.

[–] kieron115@startrek.website 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I would probably still brew decaf coffee to go with them for the taste and smell.

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Caffeine pills are the functionally superior caffeine delivery solution, but when pleasure is taken into account, they fall short.

I don't just drink coffee for the caffeine delivery, I also like how it tastes, and I value the social ritual around coffee.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I love the smell of coffee more than the taste.

And if the aromatherapy industry is any indication, we humans really like to smell things that were like

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think coffee just generally smells better than it tastes.

It still tastes good, but I would rather drink that smell for sure

[–] SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

If coffee doesn't taste like it smells, you need better coffee

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Not at all, I get freshly roasted specialty coffee ordered in small batches from a local roaster, and it tastes amazing.

Still, the smell is decidedly more pleasant, probably because you don't really smell the bitter part of coffee, which while not at all overwhelming in the coffee I drink, is still decidedly a note.

[–] SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 8 hours ago

Fair enough. But your coffee probably does taste like other people's coffee smells

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

4, yes you can, haven't you never heard of measures? Or do you just not know how to do math in your head based on how much you've had?

Volumetric dosing is more accurate than crumbs of pills, as long as you have a homogeneous solution and know it's strength.

3 swallowing pills is more boring and most people like a liquid to go with it, so you're gonna have to have a drink anyway

2 that depends a ton on the coffee and where you're buying caffeine pills from

1 practice dental hygiene and moderation of consumption.

If you're doing it just for the caffeine, you have a caffeine addiction. For me, I drink coffee because I enjoy it. The caffeine I can take or leave, and often do.

This year I've enjoyed every single cup of coffee I've had; all three of them.

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

At that point you could just take some amphetamines if you don't want to drink coffee.

[–] SuperNovaStar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 17 hours ago

I do and it's why I can't drink coffee 😭

(They're prescribed dw)

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Meh, I travel a fair bit, and go hiking quite a lot, and keep a little pouch with a bunch of essentials in it, in my bag. Among those things are some caffeine pills. They're light, cheap, and easily accessible when I need them.

I was never a coffee fan, but I do drink tea, and sometimes that experience is just plainly more pleasant than popping a pill.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 days ago

Can't dip no cookies into a pill, and that's a fact, Jack

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 58 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sure, if your goal is literally just to get a dose of caffeine. Some people actually like the taste and experience of drinking it in liquid form.

I drink decaf. Where's your god now?

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 25 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Every possible way? How about the fact that I drink coffee for the taste and ritual - not for the caffeine.

Coffee is a very good source of fiber, which protects against aging, while the drug caffeine does nothing.

My teeth are never stained.

Coffee is delicious.

So wrong on every point.

[–] Lightfire228@pawb.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fiber?

I just did a quick search for coffee nutrition facts, and all resources say 0g of fiber

Assuming you're using a paper filter, only water soluble particulates will end up in the coffee

And, water soluble fiber tends to be a thickening agent (porridge, Psyllium husk)

On what plane of existence is coffee a good source of fiber?

[–] antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] medgremlin@midwest.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"0.47 to 0.75 grams". The daily recommendation for fiber is 25 to 30 grams. You're better off with a caffeine pill and some oatmeal.

[–] antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Per 100 mL. Most people drink 300-500 mL, and many people get fewer than 15g of fiber daily. 3-4g of fiber is nothing to scoff at. It’s a good daily habit.

[–] medgremlin@midwest.social 2 points 1 day ago

I have my suspicions about how they calculated that and there was a bit in there about how freeze-dried coffee has the most fiber in it. I think it is much less than they are claiming for most of the preparations that people usually consume. Don't get me wrong, there are definite social and ritual aspects to coffee that aren't replaceable, but this trend of trying to insist that everything has some kind of physiological health benefit is seriously misguided. If you want a hot drink with actual proven health benefits, plain green tea without sugar or milk or anything is your best bet.

[–] Dogyote@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

You're not supposed to eat the grounds...

[–] 6nk06@sh.itjust.works 58 points 2 days ago (1 children)
  • 1 Not mine
  • 2, 3, 4 You really think drinking coffee is about caffeine? What's next, you should eat sugar instead of drinking soda?

It's not unpopular, it's being ignorant.

I love going on a date with a woman to
*checks notes*
take caffeine pills. lol

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Does pfizer make a viagra with caffeine?

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Not every way. Coffee is better:

Coffee tastes good.

Coffee is reasonably healthy, it's a food not a pill.

Coffee is nice to relax with friends, it's overall a pleasant experience.

On dose only, I agree. But why be efficient about eating and drinking? That doesn't seem like a reasonable goal. I want to be inefficient about that. Stop and relax.

Teas contains more psychoactive ingredients than just caffeine, including some with stabilizing effects to knock down that jittery unpleasant part. Broad spectrum stimulants are better than straight caffeine.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Broad spectrum stimulants are better than straight caffeine.

Eh, I disagree. Coffee has even more psychoactive chemicals than tea, making it an even broader spectrum... But caffeine and tea doesn't bother my stomach, coffee does.

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I'M SO EXCITED! uncontrollable sobbing

That shit was supposed to be speed (amphetamines), but it got censored 😭

[–] Engywuck@lemm.ee 10 points 2 days ago

Well, I love coffee but at the moment I'd better avoid caffeine, thus I'm drinking a lot of decaffeinated. What I mean, coffee isn't just about caffeine.

[–] crawlspace@lemm.ee 12 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Yeah its more efficient for sure, but coffee/tea/other caffeine producing plants have more alkaloids than just caffeine in them. Pure THC feels different than cannabis, plain nicotine is different than tobacco, etc. Yeah it will do the job, but elements of the experience are missing. Ever notice that the caffeine buzz from tea feels different than from coffee? Its not just the amount. Also, coffee and tea are tasty and come with a ritual that in my opinion is just as important as the drug itself. Pulling a shot of espresso and sipping on it does more for me in the morning than just chugging something caffeinated. And you can control the amount of caffeine you get to a certain degree. Most Arabica coffee contains close to 0.5%-1% caffeine by weight after roasting, so I know my shot of espresso made with 18g of beans is going to be a little under 130mg of caffeine on average accounting for less than perfect extraction.

This is all true, but thankfully tea exists which is both caffeinated and unlike coffee doesn't taste like somebody already digested it.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you like how coffee smells?

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Occasionally, not universally. I also occasionally enjoy a small bit of coffee flavor ice cream, though never very much, and I do actually like coffee in food occasionally; the espresso bellavitano is delightful and a small pinch of coffee or espresso is very nice in chilis, pork rubs, or chocolate cakes and mousses.

But drinking the stuff is no bueno for me.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

That's fair, the taste is not the smell. I think coffee smells a million times better than the taste

Its one of my big 3 smells; bread, coffee, bacon.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago
