Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.

    Sunk cost fallacy

The main two reasons for people not using linux are:

    • I don't have willpower/time to learn it.
    • I'm afraid I can't find my favorite software alternative.

And while we can all agree that Gimp/Krita/RawTherapee are decent alternatives to Adobe's suite, you would have to relearn everything you've been doing for the last x years.

Switch Adobe for AutoCAD or any other proprietary tools.

My only suggestion for anyone in those situations is setting up the tools in a VM, but that's a lot of work figuring out how, and it will be sluggish and power-intensive.

    I thought this was Linuxmemes.

    Not Windows memes.

Because this is yet an other meme that doesn't even mentions Linux.

This is the worst Venn diagram ever. The overlaps and categories are clearly just arbitrarily labelled. There are just too many combinations that are possible in reality, but not according to this diagram.

I get that it's fun to shit on windows, but please respect the Venn diagram

This is not necessarily a Venn diagram and it's not labelled as such anywhere in the post. You're attacking your own incorrect assumption.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm dumb. People keep complaining about stuff like this not being a proper Venn diagram even when it's not called that, I got my wires crossed and forgot this actually is a Venn diagram. Sorry.

Junkies also say "i need this for work". In fact i bet thats a major contributing factor in a lot of addictions - not having 2-7 days free where you can detox and be a sweaty emotional disgusting mess.

Put a circle around all 3 and label it Linux.

    [–] four@lemmy.zip 35 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I would do it, but you can't make circles in GIMP ;/

    [–] lattrommi@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 days ago

    Sure you can! See?

Yeah I think I am doing the Stockholm syndrome thing too. But as the futo keyboard chap said: is the software you use serving your needs or the needs of the creators?

Some things are indeed more difficult. But if it's a simple Python script even I can make a PR to help out. And the feeling of using software that isn't designed to send my data back to a megacorp is fucking awesome. So I'm in, I think?

Where's the circle of? I have a Nvidia graphics card and I can't switch to steam?

    [–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

It's my understanding this is pretty much a non-issue now. Try a Bootable USB of Garuda Dragonized Gaming (which is an Arch based distro designed for gaming) and test if it works. You'd be surprised at how easy things are.

Problems with nvidia is really the only reason I'm still on Windows.

    [–] HereIAm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The only problem with Nvidia is the lack Broadcast and Shadowplay. Not having their noise cancelling is unfortunate, but OBS can replace shadowplay. I know some people seem to have issues with Nvidia on Linux, but I believe they are a pretty small minority.

I have a bunch of weird issues when running Linux on my Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with an RTX3060. So unfortunately I won't be switching until the situation improves.

It's not even about gaming either, virtually all 2D animations are like 2fps, no matter the drivers or power management. I wasted days on this with some guys from the Lenovo Legion Linux discord server, and some with exactly the same laptop don't have the same issue, but windows runs fine.

It's a real shame that, maybe on the next laptop!

    [–] HereIAm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Mm, that is unfortunate! I personally keep a Windows install around for VR as well, nothing on Linux runs the Quest 3 quite as well as Virtual Desktop.

    [–] NeilBru@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I need it for Rhino + Grasshopper (well, I guess I could run it on a Mac, but I'd lose GPU acceleration).

Everything else is Kubuntu LTS for me, though I am enjoying Garuda Linux on an old laptop.

Look, as a Windows user, at least I recognize I have a problem. Just ... one... more ...boot.

    [–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

If only Affinity worked on Linux I wouldn’t even need a Windows VM.

    [–] applemao@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Tbf if you play games like pubg or bf1 bf5 etc , you need windows. Otherwise, windows would not really be needed at all.
