To be clear, the article is misusing the term left-leaning. They clarify further in that by “left-leaning” they mean neolibs and only neolibs. Because in the US anyone even slightly opposed to dictatorship and authoritarianism is “left leaning.”

They never used the term 'leftist'. They said left-leaning a lot, which is accurate to the context they're reporting on.
