Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Snip:

The pre-print of a new study led by Prof. Michael Spagat of Royal Holloway, University of London, and Palestinian political scientist Dr. Khalil Shikaki has revealed that Gaza's death toll from the ongoing conflict could be nearly 100,000, a figure significantly higher than official reports, Haaretz reported on 26 June.

The Gaza Mortality Survey (GMS), the most comprehensive to date, estimates around 75,200 violent deaths between October 2023 and January 2025—nearly 40 percent higher than the Gaza Health Ministry's reported death toll of 45,660 at the time.

Researchers carried out a detailed household survey, interviewing 2,000 families—around 9,700 individuals—to independently evaluate fatalities.

The study estimated 8,540 additional non-violent deaths through January, bringing the combined fatality count for that period to 83,740. Gaza's Health Ministry has recorded over 10,000 more deaths since then, raising the current total to nearly 100,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

100,000 directly killed by weapons is not the "death toll". It's likely 400,000 dead via direct and indirect causes.

Victims of communism memorial will include someone stubbing their toe but these fuckers will only include dying to bombs.

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago

And only dying to bombs where someone saw or enough is left of you to identify

Don't want to minimize the genocide one bit, since it's truly horrific, but the bloodiest 21st century war is the Second Congo War which had around four million deaths. Besides, the genocide in Gaza can hardly be called a "war" at all.

Second Congo War

We really don't get enough information on this one in the English-speaking world. One of the largest (or just the largest?) conflicts since WW2 and it was a conventional war (as opposed to an imperialist nation vs. an insurgency). Some wild shit happened in the Second Congo War and we never hear about it.

To be fair, you cant fully divorce it from imperialism. It was an ex Marxist and ex follower of Lumumba, vs Mobutu, a CIA installed leader who started out as a comprador but eventually became a nuisance for them.

Oh yah for sure. I just meant it wasn't like the US in Afghanistan where we had tanks, planes, and a navy against their bolt action rifles and IEDs. The Second Congo War had professional armies fighting other professional armies. I think it was also the war where one side parachuted a bunch of pilots into an airforce base and stole all the other side's planes?

Yeah it's better framed as an African world war, since there were a dozen nations involved in different fronts, with various different sides, insurgency groups, states with air forces, different phases, etc. It was a total shit show. I'm glad the third one didn't spiral out of control. The mineral deal the DRC signed with Trump is pretty awful but not nearly as awful as a full blown third Congo War at the scale of the second.

Would you be so kind as to provide some links for the comrades that want to educate ourselves about this war?

There's really not very robust sources in the Anglophone world on this war. Best I've read is a book called Africa's World War: Congo, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Making of a Continental Catastrophe by a French scholar, avaliable here: https://libgen.is/book/index.php?md5=D9F45E6B6E34D3D05EBB477305EC7102

these gross undercounts are enraging and negligent

[–] HoiPolloi@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago

It's almost certainly 4 times what this study claims.

[–] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 42 points 4 days ago

A war is when two armies are fighting.

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 39 points 4 days ago (1 children)

nears 100,000? I'd be surprised af if it wasn't that over a year ago

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago (1 children)

We don't know the real number because Isn'treal bombed every hospital

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 20 points 4 days ago

Some of the numbers are gotten by surveying families or communities also. If an entire family or community is killed it would be tougher to report the numbers. Israel and the western world that has enabled this will never be absolved.

[–] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 28 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's surely an undercount. Wasn't there a Lancet paper like a year ago that estimated a quarter million?

[–] Rod_Blagojevic@hexbear.net 32 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What about the 300 trillion Russians that Ukrainian grandmothers killed in just the last month?

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago

smug-explain Those weren't men, they were orcs /s

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 24 points 4 days ago

War is when you shoot starving unarmed people lining up for flour laced with poison!

Anyone with a brain knows it's way, way more than that.
