On Lemmy I feel like we do the same except for instances. Some person signs up with an instance oblivious to its politics but will get judged based on it.

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 78 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Of course someone on .world would say that. /j

[–] lemjukes@lemmy.world 32 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

But also blocking .ml instances by default is a great way to reduce your exposure to stupid ass takes and arguments. /not a joke

Except people accidentally join dumb instances. Nobody accidentally sets their pfp as a preteen anime girl. That shit is a choice.

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ummmmm actually my discord pfp is definitely of a girl in her early twenties. Well, ok MAYBE she's a teenager but she's definitely of age!

Yeah but you're on .world, so lets take what you have to say with a bucket of salt.

Is it really a valid point if you have an anime PFP?

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 32 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Hot take: it’s totally fair to judge someone based on their avatar as that’s literary what it is, a pictorial summary of what you’re all about.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (20 children)

Counterpoint: sometimes it's just a funny picture I like, and sometimes it's some anime titties I like. Assuming it's always going to be a meaningful representation of the user is unrealistic.

it’s totally fair to judge someone

rarely

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You're judging them based off of what is ostensibly a first impression they have chosen for themselves. I can't imagine a scenario where that's not fair. And you don't need to form an entire opinion, but the opinion starts there. If their picture was a sports team I didn't like, some furry shit, or even MAGA, I'd form some opinions out of the gate.

Your not going to stop me from saying unhinged shit in political subs.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

And you can't stop me from feeling your argument is invalid

Can't argue with that.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago

Maybe you just need to find the right community for your profile picture? Then you are unstoppable.

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The trick is to not have an anime pfp and just make terrible arguments in general

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Finally, something I'm qualified to do

Plot twist - the one calling out your anime pfp has a furry pfp

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 32 points 1 month ago

If the topic is tech related, the furry instantly gains +1 credibility

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

"Yeah well you're not a real animal!"

"Uh... Yes I am. Humans are animals, doofus."

I'm in this picture and I hate it

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, hi Achilles! How have the last dozen centuries been?

[–] Exusia@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I'd say kicking it but frankly not a lot of kicking anything with the ankle. Uk how it is. Generally Greece hasn't been friendly towards people with kinetic disabilities what with all the stairs and ships and all, so I live on an island relying on the community.

Lovely woman opened a hotel here. Had to move out when her daughter was gonna get married but apparently there was like 3 men who might be her dad...and they sang about it? Idk lotta personal issues there. So just hanging around with some guy and his rock these days.

Greek gods casting their ballot is actually a great propaganda image for democracy

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It could be worse. They could have a greek marble bust with laser eyes instead of the anime pfp.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Me, a Classics enjoyer, immediately suspecting someone of fascism when they have a Graeco-Roman bust pfp:

Similar to the Yahoo email I created when I was 14. Somehow C0d_G0dx69_420@yahoo (Made up but similar) isn't quite the professional impression I want to make now a days.

[–] Turret3857@infosec.pub 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Instead I now use C0d_G0dx69_420@proton.me

(much more professional)

The story of Achilles has always creeped me out. Imagine getting shot in the heel with a fucking arrow. Seems like one of the worst places. OTOH I guess no place is exactly good.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean, back then, a complete Achilles rupture likely meant you were permanently disabled.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Indeed, which is why getting shot in the heel was every warrior's Achilles Heel.
