Trump has recently proposed a 500% tariff on goods from countries that trade with Russia, including India and China (who buy ~70% of Russia's oil output), as well as a 10% additional tariff on goods from countries that "align themselves with BRICS." Considering that China is the largest trading partner of most of the countries on the planet at this point, and India and Brazil are reasonably strong regional players, I'm not sure what exactly "alignment" means, but it could be pretty bad.

Sanctions and tariffs on Russian products have been difficult to achieve in practice. It's easy to write an order to sanction Russia, but much harder to actually enforce these sorts of things because of, for example, the Russian shadow oil fleet, or countries like Kazakhstan acting as covert middlemen (well, as covert as a very sudden oil export boom can be).

Considering that China was pretty soundly victorious last time around, I'm cautiously optimistic, especially because China and India just outright cutting off their supply of energy and fuel would be catastrophic to them (and if Iran and Israel go to war again any time in the near future, it'll only be more disastrous). Barring China and India kowtowing to Trump and copying Europe vis-a-vis Nordstream 2 (which isn't impossible, I suppose), the question is whether China and India will appear to accede to these commands while secretly continuing trade with Russia through middlemen, or if they will be more defiant in the face of American pressure.

During the Iranian attack on the US military base in Qatar just before the "end" of the Israeli-US war against Iran, the one ballistic missile that was not intercepted ("set free" according to Trump) hit a radome at the US base, as revealed by new satellite imagery. Likely the most accurate Iranian ballistic missile strike of the entire war. I'd guess a Hormuz missile, a Fateh-110 or even potentially 313 ballistic missile with an anti radiation seeker. The much shorter range compared to targeting Israel, plus the anti radiation seeker locking on to the largest emission source of electromagnetic radiation, would explain the high accuracy.

Why is there this atmosphere of "the coming war with China"?

Unless they mean Taiwan — and maybe even then — it just seems absurd.

Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo identify 140th stolen grandchild

Estela de Carlotto read a press release at the headquarters detailing the latest identification

The Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, the group which identifies children born in captivity to parents illegally detained and forcibly disappeared during the dictatorship from 1976 to 1983, have announced via social media that they have identified their 140th grandchild. They confirmed he is the son of political activists Graciela Alieta Romero and Raúl Eugenio Metz, who remain disappeared.

He was born on April 17, 1977, at the Bahía Blanca “La Escuelita” clandestine detention and torture center, as learned through testimonies from Graciela’s captivity. His mother was five months pregnant when she was kidnapped along with Raúl. They had a one-year-old daughter, Adriana, who was raised by her grandparents and went on to lead the search for her long-lost brother as she grew up. The grandson and his true family learned the big news on Friday.

spoiler

Estela de Carlotto, head of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, confirmed the news on Monday by reading a press release at their headquarters, the Casa de la Identidad (House of Identity). Hugs, emotion-filled voices and smiles were present around the room where members of the Abuelas organization, the human rights secretariat, human rights activists and the press awaited the major announcement.

“His sister Adriana always searched for him, always. Raised by her grandparents, always a weaver, she built a network that shelters her, and today she also embraces her brother in a long-awaited reunion,” the press release said.

“For us, this is a blessing to carry on despite the circumstances. Grandmothers announce with great happiness the return of another grandson,” the organization added in the release. “We confirm once again that our grandchildren are among us, and thanks to the constant struggle of 47 years, they will continue to appear.”

According to the information provided by the Abuelas, the parents of the newly identified grandson were originally from Bahía Blanca, a coastal city in Buenos Aires province, but moved to Cutral-Có, Neuquén, fleeing political persecution. They were kidnapped in December 1976, and taken to “La Escuelita” in Neuquén, where they endured torture. They were later transferred to a detention center with the same name but in Bahía Blanca. Raúl was last seen there in January 1977, but Graciela stayed there until after giving birth in April.

The military dictatorship named some of their detention and torture centres "The Little School".

Adriana Metz Romero joined the Abuelas in their search from a young age, knowing she had a stolen brother somewhere. Today, she is part of the organization’s directive commission. “It’s my turn to be on this side [of the desk],” she said, visibly emotional, during the press conference. “Although I’ve always been in the search, I never imagined this would be like this.”

Adriana confirmed that she spoke on the phone with her brother, who also spoke with Adriana’s son, his nephew. They haven’t met in person yet, but she said he is currently living in Buenos Aires, while she lives in the coastal city Mar del Plata.

Asked by the Herald about her brother’s identity and how the process of identification began, Adriana said that they contacted him to let him know that there were chances of him being the child of dictatorship victims.

“With the information the National Identity Commission (CONADI) gave him, he was asked if he agreed to provide a DNA sample to carry out tests at the National Genetic Database, and he did,” Adriana said. Although her family had been searching for the Metz-Romero baby for decades, CONADI — which is dedicated to investigating cases of child appropriation during the dictatorship — received an anonymous tip that allowed them to more consistently work on a theory that the baby was appropriated. After the investigation concluded in April, they contacted the man and he agreed to provide a blood sample.

“I never lost hope, but I sometimes got scared that maybe he didn’t live to 5 years, or 30. I was going to keep looking for him anyway. But he is 48 now,” Adriana said. In the time he awaited for the results, the grandson checked out the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo website to look at the family groups, and “some pieces of information led him to believe that his family was ours,” Adriana said. “He saw that and imagined it would be positive, but didn’t say anything because he didn’t want to cause false expectations.”

After the press conference, De Carlotto, Adriana and several other robbed grandchildren who had got their identities back changed the number hanging at the Abuelas headquarters that marks how many grandchildren they have found so far, in a frenzy of people chanting, hollering and overall celebrating the new achievement. After speaking with the press, they shared a toast.

Adriana told the Herald that she is not picturing how her relationship with her brother will be like, but confirmed that they will meet in person. “I don’t know how or when, but we will meet, not very far from now.” “I am happy, thinking about all the work that is to come after the identification of my brother, like telling each of the Metz-Romero family that Graciela and Raúl’s son is on this side of the truth,” Adriana said.

The search in her family began as soon as they learned Graciela and Raúl had been kidnapped, filing habeas corpus to demand they appear. They were looking not only for the couple, for also for the baby that was still growing in her womb. Adriana said that her brother’s reaction to learning his true identity was “relaxed” and that their first conversation was “very easy going.”

As part of her search process, in 2009 Adriana opened a blog called “Poncho de Lana” (Wool Poncho) in which she wrote letters to her brother every April 17, his birthday, and told him who she was, how she was searching for him and how much she awaited to find him. Adriana is not sure if he read them, although he told her he saw her blog when he looked up the family name. “Adriana participated in each institutional activity, with the certainty that she would only find her brother by searching for them all. And at the end, there’s a reward,” the press release read.

The search of the Abuelas

The discovery comes after the group announced the identification of the 139th grandchild in January and the 138th in December. De Carlotto spoke with the Herald after the announcement concluded, saying that, for the organization, each new identification “is a victory of good over evil.”

“They are victims. They suddenly have a new name, a new family, and sometimes they endured mistreatments from those who pretended to be their parents,” De Carlotto said. “There are many more missing, but little by little, and hopefully with good governments that will come, we will be able to find more grandchildren.” De Carlotto questioned the defunding of memory policies by the government of Javier Milei, whom she called “the enemy” and said that he is “shattering” the country.

“We have a terrible history in Argentina, and the appropriation of children was used to dominate us,” De Carlotto said. “But they forgot that we have hearts and souls of mothers and grandmothers to look for them as long as we live.”

The first grandchild taken from their parents to be identified by the human rights organization was Tatiana Mabel Ruarte Britos. Born in 1973, her father was forcibly disappeared in 1976 and her mother the following year. She was identified in 1980.

For those who don't know, Argentina was ruled by a military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983 in the context of Operation Condor. The Argentine Military Junta of 1976 was unique among it's peers. The first years of the dictatorship were very violent, the State engaged in domestic violence against everyone who they deemed political opposition (Communists, Peronists, Socialists, Social Democrats, Liberation Theology Church, etc), not against the militant individuals only but also against their families as well, which explains the large number of disappearances (30,000). It is known as the dictatorship that ouright stole babies from their captive mothers and gifted them to friends of the regime, the fate of many of these parents remain unknown (hence the Desaparecido status). These babies were forced to start a new life under a completely artificial family to them, many of them questioned their origins and came in contact with the Madres or Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and their extensive database, where they would find their true origins and reunite with what remains of their family.

Many of the criminals involved in the Military Junta (from Generals all the way down to police officers) are still being tried by the Justice, but they are done so in public civilian courts, something that is unique in the world. The Argentinian case is also unique in the sense that a civilian government pardoned military and police officers who carried out tortures, disappearances and killings. In 1986 two laws were put into place, the Full Stop Law and the Law of Due Obedience, which literally made prosecuting military and police officers illegal. And then, it was the civilian government under Néstor Kirchner who declared both laws unconstitutional in 2005 which allowed for the reopening of the trials (A civilian court handled the first round of trials in 1985 against the main members of the Junta).

Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia on the probable illegalization of their party:

The Chamber of Deputies has definitively confirmed that it systematically silences its opponents by restricting constitutional rights and freedoms when, as part of the amendment to the Criminal Code, it approved the criminalization of all forms of support and promotion of the communist movement! Not one of the two hundred deputies spoke out against this proposal!

Fial's government is still responsible for introducing censorship, banning websites, bullying and persecution of political opponents and their criminalization, and firing people from jobs for political reasons.

We strongly reject such a proposal for an amendment to the Criminal Code and consider it purposeful and discriminatory. By repeatedly trying to outlaw the KSČM, which has been rejected by the public several times in the past, the proposers want to please the rest of their voters and intimidate anyone who criticizes the current regime.

However, the truth cannot be silenced or banned. No one will ever silence the KSČM, nor the values that communists stand for – the values of international cooperation, solidarity, progress and peace.

Join the protest against the systematic liquidation of the political opposition!

The coalition in which KSCM runs is polling around 5% for October's elections, which would bring them (as well as any left party) back into parliament after falling below the 5% threshold in 2021

Texas Flooding is ‘Act of God,’ Says White House Press Secretary - Telesur English

Article

Senator Schumer called for an investigation into whether staffing shortages at NWS stations contributed to the tragedy. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt rejected criticism that the Trump administration’s recent staffing cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS) contributed to the deadly floods in Texas.

“This was an act of God. It is not the administration’s fault that the flood hit when it did,” Leavitt said, noting that the NWS “did its job” by sending “early and consistent warnings.” “Unfortunately, in the wake of this once-in-a-generation natural disaster, we have seen many falsehoods pushed by Democrats such as Senator Chuck Schumer and some members of the media,” Leavitt said. “Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie, and it serves no purpose during this time of national mourning,” she added.

On Monday, Schumer, the Senate Democratic Leader, called for an investigation into whether “staffing shortages at key local NWS stations contributed to the catastrophic loss of life and property during the deadly flooding.” Over 500 workers were reportedly cut by the Trump administration or left on their own, leaving NWS short-staffed. According to its website, six of 27 positions are listed as vacant at the NWS office for Austin/San Antonio, which covers the region that includes hard-hit Kerr County, including a key manager responsible for issuing warnings and coordinating with local emergency management officials. On Tuesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott updated the death toll from last weekend’s flooding. So far, authorities have reported 170 people missing and 110 dead.

Donald Trump announces a 50% tax on Brazil. Trump cited decisions by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and said that the taxes should start to apply in August.

Trump Letter to Lula da Silva

"Dear Mr. President: I met and dealt with former President Jair Bolsonaro, and I respected him very much, as I do most other leaders of countries. The way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro, a leader who was highly respected around the world during his time in office, including by the United States, is an international disgrace. This trial should not be taking place. It is a Witch Hunt that must end IMMEDIATELY!

In part due to Brazil's insidious attacks on free elections and fundamental violation of Americans' freedom of speech (as demonstrated recently by Brazil's Supreme Court issuing hundreds of SECRET and ILLEGAL censorship orders to U.S. social media platforms, threatening them with million-dollar fines and expulsion from the Brazilian social media market), as of August 1, 2025, we will charge Brazil a 50% tariff on any and all Brazilian exports shipped to the United States, separate from all existing sectoral tariffs. Goods transshipped to try to avoid this 50% tariff will be subject to this higher tariff. In addition, we have had years to discuss our trade relationship with Brazil and have concluded that we need to move away from the long and very unfair trade relationship generated by Brazil's tariffs and tariff and non-tariff barriers. Our relationship, unfortunately, has been far from reciprocal.

Please understand that the 50% is much less than would be necessary for us to have a level playing field in our trade with your country. And it is necessary to have this in order to correct the serious injustices of the current system. As you know, there will be no tariff if Brazil, or companies within your country, decide to build or manufacture products within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to approve it quickly, professionally and routinely - in other words, in a matter of weeks. If for any reason you decide to increase your tariffs, whatever amount you choose, it will be added to the 50% we charge. Please understand that these tariffs are necessary to correct Brazil's many years of tariffs and tariff and non-tariff barriers, which have caused these unsustainable trade deficits against the United States. This deficit is a major threat to our economy and, indeed, to our national security!

In addition, due to Brazil's continued attacks on the digital business activities of U.S. companies, as well as other unfair trade practices, I am instructing U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to immediately initiate a Section 301 investigation of Brazil. If you wish to open your previously closed trade markets to the United States and eliminate your tariffs, non-tariff policies and trade barriers, we may be able to consider an adjustment to this letter. These tariffs can be modified, up or down, depending on the relationship with your country. You will never be disappointed by the United States of America. Thank you very much for your attention to this matter! With best wishes, I am, Yours faithfully, DONALD J. TRUMP"

Trump confirms that more PATRIOT air defence batteries are on the way to Ukraine, likely financed by Germany and Norway. So Germany and Norway buy US military equipment, and send it to Ukraine. A sign of things to come. A lot more of this on the way.

Video source.

Germany is also financing the Ukrainian production of a "high three digit number" of cruise missiles and drones, likely the already existing Ukrainian systems like Long Neptune cruise missile, Bars cruise missile, AN-196 one way attack drone, and the Ukrainian equivalents of German/Shaded and Harop/Harpy one way attack drones. The first batch of these systems will finish production at the end of July. As they are Ukrainian made and operated, no restrictions on striking deep into internationally recognised Russian territory. Some of these systems have ranges between 1000-2000km. In response to Russian air raids, NATO seeks to give Ukraine it's own significant long range strike capabilitiy.

Video source

In other news, after Germany acquired the joint Israeli-US developed Arrow 3 exoatmospheric ballistic missile defence/intercept system, Germany is also interested in acquiring the Arrow 4 system, the replacement of Arrow 2. Arrow 4 is set to offer improved performance against ballistic targets (more altitude and range) and capability against hypersonic threats, likely similar to the performance jump S-500 offers over S-300V. Germany is seeking to protect itself, and Europe, against ballistic missiles from Russia. (That's the only possible perceived threat).

I've noticed Ansarallah blurs out the surrounding terrain whenever they post missile launch videos, but most of the time it looks like totally nondescript hills and vegetation. Would it really be possible to figure out the location of these launches if they weren't blurred? And if so, does the blurring actually help if you can still get a vague outline of the horizon like in this one?

China classified the 50% tariff on exports to the United States imposed on Brazil by President Donald Trump as “abuse”, in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chinese Foreign Ministry "China's position is very clear. China has always opposed initiatives that burden the concept of national security and has always maintained that trade and tariff wars have no winners, and that the abuse of tariffs is in no one's interest," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

China has sent a direct message to the US: “tariffs are not weapons of intimidation”. Spokeswoman Mao Ning said that tariffs should not be used as a form of coercion or interference in internal affairs. The statement was made on the 11th at a press conference in Beijing. Beijing reacted by saying that “sovereign equality and non-interference” are UN principles and that trade wars benefit no one. The criticism also targets the threat of a surcharge against countries aligned with the BRICS. At a meeting in ASEAN, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed that American tariffs are trying to prevent the growth of countries in Southeast Asia. Cambodia, which was slapped with a 36% tariff, was cited as an example of Washington's pressure.

An update on Eternity C, the second commercial ship in as many days likely targeted by Ansarallah/Houthis in Yemen.

The ship has sustained severe damage, likely to the engine room as there is a lack of propulsion. It is also rumoured to be listing up to 15°. The 2 missing crew members (crew of 20+ Filipinos and one Russian) are now confirmed dead, and the ship is surrounded by small vessels and taking constant fire, preventing disembarkment or evacuation. With Magic Seas, the crew was allowed to disembark and abandon ship.

The El-Salvador of the Baltic: Estonia in Talks with NATO Members to Expand Estonia's Prison Rental System

ERR - Johannes Voltri ^today^

In addition to the agreement with Sweden, which has already reached the ratification stage, to keep its prisoners in Estonia, and Finland's interest in concluding a similar agreement, there are other countries that have informally explored the possibility of renting prison places from Estonia, Justice and Digital Affairs Minister Liisa Pakosta said.

"Yes, there are more than one. /---/ But I would skip discussing this list here," Pakosta told Vikerraadio's "Uudis+" programme on Friday.

Asked to clarify the information, however, she added that Estonia has said from the beginning that the only reason to do this is for wider security cooperation. "Maybe we are only talking about NATO member states," the minister said.

At the same time, Pakosta stressed that Estonia, unlike many other countries, would rent out its prisons on the condition that Estonian laws would remain in force in these detention facilities, and he has said as much to Finnish Justice Minister Leena Meri.

"It's just that the Swedes have clearly been the quickest, and we have had these negotiations with the Swedes at executive level. Now it is up to the parliaments of both countries to decide. If the people's parliaments in both countries ratify the agreement, it will go ahead. If they don't, then we'll start looking again," he said.

Asked whether he himself would like to conclude a similar agreement with Finland, the Justice Minister replied. We have no ambition to become some kind of country that rents out prison space. We are not aiming to rent out a prison for a prison.

Trump threatens a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, and he may double what most other nations are charged - CNN

Article

President Donald Trump late Thursday threatened a 35% tariff on goods imported from Canada, a dramatic escalation in an on-again, off-again trade war with America’s northern neighbor and one of its most important trading partners. And, in a separate NBC News interview, he suggested blanket tariffs on other US trading partners will jump, as well.

The Thursday actions are the latest examples of a whipsaw policy that’s left investors, trading partners, businesses and everyday Americans alike scrambling to make plans even as the economic ground shifts not just from week to week but in some cases from hour to hour. It wasn’t immediately clear if the new tariffs would apply to all Canadian goods or if Trump’s threat applied only to the limited number of goods on which the United States currently levies tariffs.

Trump’s announcement of higher tariffs on Canada comes amid a flurry of letters Trump has sent to world leaders over the past week informing them what rates their goods will be tariffed at come August 1, absent any trade deals. Trump has sent nearly two dozen such letters. But Canada is by far the largest trading partner with the United States to receive a letter from Trump this week.

NBC News also reported Thursday that Trump told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that the remaining US trading partners that have not yet received trade letters or reached framework agreements will be charged a blanket tariff rate. The United States currently imposes a 10% tariff on nearly all foreign goods coming into the country, but Trump on Thursday said he might double that.

“We’re just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it’s 20% or 15%. We’ll work that out now,” Trump said, according to NBC News. Canada is the top buyer of US exported goods, importing $349 billion worth last year, according to Department of Commerce data. Tariffing Canadian goods could, therefore, backfire if additional retaliatory tariffs are put in place on American goods. (Trump threatened to respond to any such tariffs by raising rates on Canadian goods.)

Meanwhile, Canada shipped $413 billion worth of goods to the US last year, the third-highest source of foreign goods.

Back and forth tariffs

But Canada has been the subject of Trump’s scorn since before he took office. In November 2024, just a few weeks after the election, Trump pledged 25% tariffs on all products from Canada and Mexico on his first day in office “until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”

A day before those tariffs were set to go into effect in February, Trump paused them for 30 days. They went into effect March 6, but Trump exempted goods that were compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada agreement that he negotiated and signed during his first term in office. That significantly blunted the impact of the tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

On March 7, Trump threatened new tariffs on Canadian lumber and dairy products. “Canada has been ripping us off for years on lumber and on dairy products,” Trump said in an Oval Office address that day, citing Canada’s roughly 250% tariff on US dairy exports to the country. Trump said America would match those tariffs dollar-for-dollar. But the tariffs were never implemented.

Last month Trump – once again – threatened to hike taxes on Canadian goods over a retroactive digital services tax that was set to take effect, which would have fallen heavily on American tech companies that did business in Canada. In the 11th hour, Canada indefinitely postponed the tax in an effort to continue trade talks and avoid higher tariffs.

And, throughout, he has often waxed poetic about his desire to see Canada become the 51st state – a proposition Canada has vehemently, and repeatedly, rejected.

The sectoral tariffs Trump imposed include 50% taxes across all imported steel and aluminum and 25% tariffs on most cars and car parts – some of Canada’s main exports to the US. The tariffs have been charged on Canadian shipments that do not comply with the USMCA, a previous trade agreement.

In response to those auto tariffs, Canada levied a 25% tariff on US-made vehicles that aren’t compliant with USMCA. Canada also retaliated against Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs by rolling out a tariffs on billions of dollars worth of US goods, including whiskey, sporting gear and household appliances.

In Thursday’s letter, Trump mentioned the fentanyl issue, one of his original reasons for tariffing America’s northern neighbor. However, it’s unclear the extent to which Canada is responsible for enabling the drug to reach America.

“If Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter. These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country,” Trump said in the letter. He also claimed Canada has non-tariff barriers that are contributing to the trade deficit the US runs with it.

“You will never be disappointed with The United States of America,” Trump added, a line which he’s included in all his letters to heads of state this week.
