Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

Column 1, Row 5:

I like the implication that two people bumping into each other is considered a traffic accident.

I’d love to see that normalised to how many of each vehicle type are in use aver the same time.

Initially, I see that and think trucks are less deadly than cars, but according to my brief Google search (https://www.statistiques.developpement-durable.gouv.fr/donnees-sur-le-parc-automobile-francais-au-1er-janvier-2024), there are 5x more cars than trucks, which puts them [trucks] over the top of cars in every category.

I guess that doesn’t really matter to the pedestrian. It still sucks to be killed by either.

A better measure is to normalise by kilometres driven rather than number of vehicles.

[–] ObM@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

Sure! Scooters could be lethal!

[–] reactionality@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 4 weeks ago

These are not normalized by amounts of those vehicles in circulation. So it's essentially incomparable data.

Yeah, how on earth did a vehicle passenger get killed by a pedestrian, and one by a bicycle?

I'm not sure how much I trust this.

Driver hit a pedestrian and an immobile barrier.

Pedestrian survived the car, driver died from what their car hit.

[–] Armok_the_bunny@lemmy.world 5 points 4 weeks ago

Who says the pedestrian survived?

[–] y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

if you hit someone just right, they'll fly through your windshield and into your face. I think it's more common when hitting a deer or something, though.

Moose. Moose win.

No seat belt, panic swerve, or something like that.

I've been feeling the lack of a /dataisbeautiful. Thanks for sharing!

One car passenger died to a pedastrian. Wow!

Does the "other" category really just mean blimps? Because I hope it means blimps.

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Three fatailities from a blimp collision.

Skateboards, roller blades, ... I guess

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

They should all drive lorries to make it safer for bikes and peds.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 2 points 4 weeks ago

Oh, I might have misread that.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 2 points 4 weeks ago

I know we should focus on the redder squares, but damn the question marks in France are running fucking wild over there.

[–] DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 4 weeks ago

Over the scooters take out all the pedestrians, they will be perfectly safe.
