WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Monday he’s placing the Washington, D.C., police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to make the nation’s capital safer.

Trump has promised new steps to tackle homelessness and crime in Washington, prompting the city's mayor to voice concerns about the potential use of the National Guard to patrol the streets.

Ahead of a news conference, Trump said Monday on social media that the nation's capital would be “LIBERATED today!” He said he would end the “days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people.”

Violent crime in Washington D.C. is actually at a 30 year low.

Washington crime is down to it's lowest in 30 years but sure why not. What a idiot.

Good times. Remember the last time tRump took over DC on 1/6?

[–] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Failed takeover attempt. That's a hangin' in olden times. Man, sometimes I miss the good old days.

[–] MoonRaven@feddit.nl 13 points 5 hours ago

We are getting so close to the bell riots' cause...

If there’s concern about criminals in DC, let’s start with the sexual predator living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 41 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

We all know he doesn't actually live at the White House. He does all his most important work from the Mar-a-Lago bathroom.

[–] Colonel_Panic_@eviltoast.org 5 points 4 hours ago

Some people read magazines or scroll social media while they shit, but THIS GUY reads classified national secrets.

What's funny is he is simultaneously too dumb to be reading that sort of thing and too dumb to not understand how national security works.

Remember when a bunch of dumb assholes didn't think fascism could happen in America?

Remember when a bunch of dumb assholes allowed themselves to trip and fall into the "single issue" hole and let fascism take hold in America over a conflict happening on the other side of the planet?

[–] mapmyhike@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

Yeah but, I didn't like the way the woman laughed.

[–] Ferrous@lemmy.ml 14 points 7 hours ago (7 children)

"A conflict happening on the other side of the planet" is one my new favorite euphemisms for genocide - one that has left 50k children killed or injured.

What I remember was the Democratic establishment being presented with a simple choice between halting fascism and doing genocide, and they went balls deep in genocide. In reality, halting fascism via the Democrats was never in the cards.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

2 years of live streamed genocide and these people still don't see the fascism from the Democrats, there's no hope. They'll downvote and move on, continue to blame everyone but themselves for refusing to hold the Democrats accountable.

Washington DC is sliding further into fascism all because a kid named "Big Balls", who was put in a leadership position of dismantling the federal government, got beat up by a bunch of 15 year olds. this is truly the dumbest timeline.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 6 hours ago

If it ever even happened.

[–] rozodru@lemmy.world 20 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

further? newsflash, it's already there as is the rest of the country. how can you slide further into something when you're already up to your chin in fascist shit?

This is the EXACT problem with Americans. It's always "it's happening" or "soon" or "we're heading there" when the boat is already underwater.

What more is it going to take for US Citizens to finally accept that they're a fascist nation? what more does the Nazi in charge have to do for Americans to start rioting and resisting?

[–] tabarnaski@sh.itjust.works 13 points 7 hours ago

Most people won't realize it until masked men put them in an unmarked van.

Allegedly by a bunch of 15 year olds. It was probably 2 seven year olds in a trench coat.

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Probably hired by El TACO to do the job so he would have an EXCUSE to go all martial law.

[–] shittydwarf@sh.itjust.works 213 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

To help find the Epstein files?

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 14 points 6 hours ago

Normalize calling them the Trump/Epstein Files.

If you agree with this, please spread the word in any other threads where you see only "Epstein Files"

Well they weren't on the roof

“Lying fraudster lies to grab more power by military control”

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 82 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (7 children)

He can only do this for 30 days, then congress has to pass a law extending it. Wonder if Congress bends the knee? I have no doubts they will, and it'll be another example of their cowardice.

DC has seen record lows in crime. This is all Trump going crazy.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 12 points 6 hours ago

Laws. Do. Not. Apply. To. Trump.

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 62 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

I continue to be baffled that people assume that the orangeboi regime “has” to do anything.

They don’t, and nobody who has the barest shred of power to do fucking anything about it is actually doing anything to stop it. They are, and will continue to, categorically ignore laws, court orders, precedent, convention, and so on. They demonstrably do not give a shit.

Stop fucking pretending that this is a normal situation and a normal government. It’s not. The last 4 years were our Weimar Republic era. This 4 (+ ???) year span will be when they do the Enabling Act, citizenship/blood and honor laws, the Treachery Act (honestly wouldn’t even be surprised if they used the same fucking name for it), the Malicious Practices Act, and so on. There is a playbook, and they’re following it.

“The people in charge will stop this.”
The people in charge:🧎🏼

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 20 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

You're putting an awful lot of faith in the fact that literally anyone will stop him from doing this longer than 30 days. Congress has to pass a law to extend it? Says who? The law? I don't reckon Trump cares much about a silly little thing like the law.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 12 points 7 hours ago

More importantly, the law doesn't care about holding Trump accountable in any way, shape, or form. Convicted on 34 felony counts, absolutely no consequences.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 8 hours ago

He can only do this for 30 days, then congress has to pass a law extending it

Lol cute

[–] Joeffect@lemmy.world 19 points 9 hours ago

I guess this puts the military in a position to murder the democrats?

[–] RanryuuRain@sh.itjust.works 21 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Surely it's cheaper to house the homeless...

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 13 points 7 hours ago

Sure, if the goal was to house the homeless.

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 17 points 8 hours ago

Do you have any idea the emotional toll this takes on the "haves" when they endure the "have nots" getting anything for "free"? Never mind if it's not even actually free or amounts to providing basic human dignity or life saving care. Bet you didn't factor that cost in did ya?
