Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

I was impressed by the attention to detail. These illustrations are usually so bland and generic.

everyone who isn’t a corporate drone is a “hipster” now….
reminds me of how back in the day, everyone who wasn’t a corporate drone was a “hippie”….

Let's be real, if you are wearing an intact Sub-Pop tee in 2025, you're a tectbook hipster.

let’s be really real, they sell sub pop tshirts at walmart… this pamphlet is probably fake, btw.
nirvana is classic rock now.

How dare you. Kurt died, what, ten years ago? Fifteen.

VERY RECENTLY

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Dude he died before I was born and my back hurts

Hipsters used to mean try hards for attention that spend all their energy of staying ahead of what is popular.

Now it means any man that dress casually but have spent a single thought on what they wear.

It seems these people calling out "hipsters" think everybody must conform to worn out monochrome t-shirts and blue jeans. Until somebody does it with a nice haircut slightly out of the ordinary, then they too are a hipster. These people would have been mad at The Beatles for their long hair back some ten years after their breakthrough.

I thought hipsters had to wear non-prescription thick rimmed glasses and carry a satchel / record bag. I guess standards have slipped

  • Hippies create culture, born out of nothing more than mud and sweat as an escape from soul-crushing capitalism.
    • The idea is everything. It gives purpose and meaning.
    • If you're a barely-scraping by mechanic that makes little metal figurines in your free time with spare parts just because it makes you happy -- you're a hippy.
    • If you're a coder who can't make rent but likes to put out free and open source software because it makes you happy -- you're probably a hippy.
  • Hipsters admire this culture, but do not love the mud and sweat. They pay top dollar for Hippie products.
    • Image is everything. They project to others that they believe in a more fun and artful world, but their contribution to it is mostly derivative or parasitic.
    • They are simultaneously foes and allies to the hippie cause in the way that they compartmentalize and mass produce hippie products to the mindless masses, whilst giving the hippie message a stage

that’s just a silly redefinition of words….
no, they don’t mean those things

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

if you refute someone's point, you need to provide a counterpoint - otherwise people will think that your only ability is to toss insults

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i don’t engage with trolls.
but to “refute” you: you didn’t have a point, you just completely made up your own, brand-new definitions…
every dictionary that has any definition of these words refutes your compulsive lying, i won’t copy and paste them and dance for you.
———
i do hope whatever boring, sad, forces that compel you to try to annoy people online gets better and you find a more fulfilling way to spend your life, before you wake up one day realizing you’ve wasted countless hours of trying your best to get attention by being irritating online and making stuff up.
Just imagine, if you spent the energy you spend trying to interrupt people having conversations into ANY endeavor, you could actually become an interesting person and get positive attention…
you trolls are just so sad.

i feel bad for people like you

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That's absolutely not what either of those words mean. Hippies were participants in a mid 20th century counterculture with elements such as use of psychedelic drugs, cannabis use, opposition to war, communal living, free love, returning to harmony with nature, and rejection of traditional societal norms.

Yes they had many descendant movements, such as the techno hippies (who ultimately descended into the open source movement), the new age, the Jesus freaks, etc and their influence can even be found in those who rejected them. But there were hippies who were posers and who were only in it for drugs or sex.

Hipster is a derogatory term for young primarily urban people focusing on aesthetics and individualism thats infamously hard to pin down and is largely associated with early 10s indie and social media scenes. In fact it is largely associated with outright rejection of any mass produced culture

Here is a video correlary to explain hipsters.

Funny thing: There is actually scientific evidence that people who feel they are represented by warning, safety and order signs do follow them more and do encourage people to engage with safety pamphlets more or follow the orders a sign is given - but also subconsciously remember the information/order later much better.

It therefore makes sense to do this.

“I had my seatbelt buckled before the light went on. You probably never heard of it…”

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bro I put it on immediately when I sit down, always. Not that it would help much in a crash. 😅

It just feels better. It's muscle memory because I do the same when driving. Sit down; belt on.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Forget a crash, it saves you from hitting your head on the ceiling when the plane encounters turbulence and suddenly drops 10 meters and everything not held down goes flying inside.

Pretty sure it's Alaska. Sub Pop is Seattle based, as is Alaska, and that looks like your average dude in Seattle TBH

[–] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago

Yep, Alaska.

I haven't seen a man wear that much denim in public since the 90s. I thought hipsters were into plaid, beanies and Starbucks.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

No, we were into plaid, beanies, and our local coffee shop

[–] sploosh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Denim was huge about a decade ago, at least in the NW US.
