As a neurodivergent person of trans experience, online socializing is critical for safely recharging my social needs. This seems like a good refuge from the plague of corporate interests at the moment. I'm excited to explore and enthuse with everyone :)

Some biographical descriptors:

  • friend of critters, plants, and computers
  • enthusiastic spouse and coparent to 3 hounds
  • radical egalitarian
  • queer guy of trans experience
  • inhabitant of a spicy CNS
  • former biomedical researcher
  • current software engineer
  • aspiring physician
  • cPTSD survivor
  • AR/VR enthusiast
  • armchair philosopher
  • anticapitalist

I'm a redneck from Appalachia that has been beaten down by the negativity in the world and from the hostility in anonymous online communities. It's crazy how hostile people can get when they don't think they'll get in trouble. Really loving how friendly everyone seems to be on here and I hope the good environment helps me become less antagonistic personally. Remember the human!

What's keeping me busy right now is working on my land cruiser and getting it into offroading shape. I love the gym and squats specifically. I made it to 435lbs before I got old and decided to take a chill pill. Playing Days Gone the game on my PS5.

Yet another Reddit refugee checking in. I find much of the modern social internet overwhelming and exhausting (looking at you, Discord...) so I was glad to find out about Beehaw. I have entirely too many interests and hobbies, which I tend to rotate through as the whim strikes me. At the moment, it's mostly Gunpla kits, Nintendo Switch (I am the filthiest of casuals), and container gardening (50/50 chance I lose interest before I get a single vegetable).

Hi, my name is Alicja or Layla. I am trans girl. I am really interested in almost anything technology related, and I am also interested in science, mathematics, foss and bunch more. I am currently studying to get mechatronics degree.

[–] TMoney@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

What's mechatronics? Like a robots degree?

[–] ZenGrammy@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Hi all! I'm another Reddit refugee I guess. I just couldn't abide by their policies any longer so I deleted my 13 years of comments and my account and here I am.

I'm "just" a boring suburban housewife with an awesome dog and progressive political views these days, but I used to work in medical billing and I've raised two boys and two stepkids who are still in my life even though I left their dad many years ago. Five years ago my body decided to rebel against me and make me have a stroke. I am largely healed from that but it took away my active hobbies and I'm technically disabled due to chronic pain and some memory issues.

I have Huntington's Disease. I'm pre-symptomatic right now. I inherited it from my mother, who is currently living at a nursing home. I'd be stoked to find people who could relate to the whole genetic disorder thing. It's a heavy burden sometimes.

I've been active on forums on and off since the late 90's. I used to be a mod back when that was a new thing. I enjoy cooking and solitude and playing The Sims. I have a wonderful husband who also loves solitude, and we enjoy our solitude in the same house but different rooms most of the time.

I keep in touch with my friends and family through digital means for the most part because I can't drive. I meditate and loosely follow the Buddhist principles of letting go of negative emotions when possible and appreciating what is around me. I am a work in progress.

[–] themoleofdoom@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

Hey there. I'm yet another redditor that has joined lemmy today to see what the world looks like beyond the walls of the pile of crap that my former digital home has turned into. Still learning how things work around here but definitely like the general vibe of things.

[–] nickb333@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hello. Been here since April already. I'm a late Baby boomer, dad to one, granddad to four. Quite introvert and reserved (unless alcohol is involved) but if you poke me enough I might engage in conversation with you. Self-deprecating sense of humour.

Most of the time live in the UK but my SO lives in the US and I spend a couple of months a year over there, she spends time here too. We'll eventually settle in one place but for now we both have active jobs so this has been a good compromise for the last 15 years. Add step-dad to one and step-granddad to two.

Religious beliefs - confirmed atheist - but I respect others' beliefs if that's what they choose and they live by their convictions (not just the one hour they attend their place of worship a week.)

Sexual orientation - I am a heterosexual male, however. I strongly believe that others may have different preferences, or be uncertain what their preferences are and I respect and accept this. I also encourage others who have narrower views to do the same.

I currently work in a technical support role in Civil Aviation, where most of the systems are now at the trailing edge of technology.

I feel that the Fediverse is a good thing and I hope it succeeds. But I do feel I've been here before with Fidonet and BBSs (bulletin boards), Usenet (internet newsgroups but before they were polluted by the Google Groups interface) and of course #IRC. Big Tech turned the internet into a consumer and business tool and monetised it by capturing the users in their walled gardens (yes, F.., T.., R.., G..,) Some of these I do still use to engage with less tech-savvy family and friends.

Updated to add my Mastodon link

I'm a 22 year old student and recently a Reddit refugee, still trying to find the right communities in this network. I like linguistics, languages in general, biology and, as a stereotypical nerd, anime, manga, TTRPG and videogames, though I play mostly older games, through emulation.

[–] Prymu@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi I am prymu and I am a reddit referee. I am from poland and am interested in geopolitics and technology of all sorts. Lately I have found myself to be a server admin for my own "homelab" (it is just 1 server for now). I also am interested is aviation and ai art (stable diffusion)

[–] destructdisc@reddthat.com 1 points 1 year ago

lemmyfly.org has you covered for aviation!

[–] lwgrs@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Well, I tried introducing myself via kbin and I was going to reply to that introduction since I have now been accepted to beehaw...but I can't find that reply in this thread. So I'll write again!

I work in media (behind the scenes...but I also have a few podcasts on the go and I blog), I have epilepsy, and I like to talk about all sorts of subjects. I'm doing a poor job summarizing myself so I'll just copy/paste from my Mastodon page (with some redactions):

Writer/podcaster; fan of books, podcasts, hockey, baseball, curling & movies. Regional Traffic Manager for [REDACTED]. Views & opinions are my own.

I was also diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 35 (4 years ago, now). Sometimes I talk about that.

[–] Frexican21@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

I'm also switching over from Reddit! I didn't post as much on Reddit but I will try to here. Hoping to find similar communities as the ones on Reddit such as sourdough, city communities (Brussels, Edinburgh, etc.) And games. Still trying to figure out the fediverse but liking it a lot so far!

[–] retronautickz@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Hi, I'm Pallas/retronautickz. I can't consider myself a refugee, even though I use(d) Reddit, because I'm not new to the fediverse and it wasn't the Reddit API changes that made me decide to try Lemmy, but rather wanting to try out other forms of federated social networks other than the one I already use (mastodon)

About me? I'm 29, vegan, queer, neurodivergent and disabled. My interests are languages, both learning and conlanging, and anything vintage (my username being a reference to this). If my profile picture isn't clue enough, I'm a big fan of classical music (and I've been since I was a little kid), but I love music in general and I'm open to listen/discover new artists and genres/styles.

[–] jlarex@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

Hi everybody, another reddit refugee here. I'm liking the vibe of this place so far, reminds me of the early days of reddit before it got too full of trolls, bots, & spam. Some of My interests are tech, art, craft and diy hobbies, 3d printers, lgbt topics.

[–] emptyother@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hi, im a redditor. Probably won't be for long though.

Im a c# and typescript developer, computer enthusiast, avid book and comic reader, and a fantasy and scifi fan. Im very introverted and agoraphobic, unskilled at social stuff, badly overweight and less-than-optimally-active, and just started on anti-depressants. Other than that im an utterly boring person.

[–] TMoney@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh fun, another C# dev. I don't do much C# anymore due to job direction but it's my favorite language hands down. What kind of dev do you do? I'm mostly in the cloud these days doing backend stuff.

[–] emptyother@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

What kind of dev don't I do? At work we are building a webapp for making exercise programs. I'm working with C# and VB (both .net framework and .net 7), Typescript (frontend), Javascript (EmberJs mostly), some PHP (our old CRM system), Azure and MySQL administration, Azure VM Windows and Linux administration, and devops. So very much fullstack. Its a small company so it used to be only me and the CTO doing dev. Luckily we've gotten more good developers the last few years and now we're 7 devs.

Private I'm doing powershell stuff. Sometimes typescript stuff. I used to do a bit of gamedev but not much anymore.

hey all! i’m thumbtack, been here a couple of weeks and believe id like to stay after being a redditor for ~6 years. i’m interested in spirituality, creative works (sewing, drawing, etc.), world building, and alternative rock music. looking forward to being part of the community!

[–] SugarApplePie@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Heya everyone. Found this place when I was looking for Reddit alternatives after getting the shut down message in Apollo. Checked the list of alternatives on a subreddit and was immediately grossed out by transphobic sites and fucking VOAT of all places being in the list, so randomly running into this place after that was very relieving.

Big into tabletop RPGs, started with Pathfinder 1st edition a long time ago but have mostly been playing D&D 5th edition with some sprinklings of OSR and PbtA-influenced games (well, game, singular. Blades in the Dark is super fun though!) Like most tabletop fans probably, I'm also into fantasy/sci-fi media.

Happy weekend!

[–] BobQuasit@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Looks like there are quite a few people into TTRPGs around here! Maybe we should have an LFG community?

Hello, i'm andrew and like many — a reddit refugee. I'm a graphic designer and web developer who currently resides in the UK, but is planning on moving to Germany later this year. It feels nice to be looking around all of the different communities, my main focus at the moment is learning German.

[–] skepticalifornia@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

I’m a Reddit refugee, been trying Beehaw and Kbin. Kudos to whatever was done to improve the speed here, it is lightning fast today! Kbin, not so much - the owner there had to implement DDOS protection and it is largely unusable at the moment. All of this is a work in progress and is rather exciting! I am going to switch over to Lemmy in full from Reddit, and I think this will end up being just fine.

[–] Cosmonaut_Collin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hey guys, I am another one of the reddit refugees. I mostly used reddit to look at memes, get news about the us economy, view world news, and stay in the loop with gaming news. I can't wait to find new communities to join and experience the joy of a social media site in its infancy. Even on reddit, it seemed like all of the cool stuff was the early years of the site. Hopefully I can witness the famous or infamous posts this site will produce.

[–] while1malloc0@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Hey all, I heard about Lemmy from Mastodon and thought I’d give it a shot. I was never much of a reddit user besides occasional lurking, mostly because the quality of discussions seemed pretty hit or miss. BeeHaw seems a lot nicer though, so I thought I’d give it a shot.

I use he/him/his pronouns. If privilege was a game of bingo, my particular demographics would likely be the free space. I try to acknowledge that and use it for good.

By day I’m a staff software engineer at a relatively large tech company (which means I write more docs than code most of the time), and by night I’m a cooking enthusiast, musician, sci fi novel fan, and exhausted parent of a toddler.

[–] Master@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I've almost signed up for this a few time but never felt the need to complete the sign up since there was always reddit... but now I'm starting to doubt reddit will survive unharmed. So here I am.

[–] gospelofjohnny@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hey everyone! I’m excited to be here. I’m still learning how everything works but I look forward to the future! I have a question though, if I’m interested in, say, working out, I can’t seem to find any communities. Does anyone know of where I can find a workout community, or do I need to join a different instance outside of beehaw?

[–] Deestan@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Hi!

If you find the community in another instance, you can subscribe to that community from here. The sidebar of the community should have some rough instructions.

[–] Knickknack@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Hi everyone! I just arrived here from Reddit, and am looking forward to getting to know Beehaw's communities. I think my discord bio described me best: geriatric millennial, entertainment junkie (books, shows, movies, news, gossip), nature enjoyer. I'm a member of the LGBTQIA community, involved in science fields by trade, and on a perpetual mission to learn new things. Happy to be here.

[–] yumi_uwu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Hi i am Yumi 23, just a lost soul somewhere in your small little rectangle in your pocket. I wish everyone a nice day.

[–] Faye_Pixie@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Came here from Reddit! Just hoping to talk to other people about my interests, idk how much I'll post though lol.

[–] wulfinna@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hard to figure where to start. Been on just about every platform here and there with little special use for any of them. I have very bittersweet feelings about the Internet overall, relating mostly to what happens with information available to us. I'm not too filled in on the scope of the reddit drama, but I do really like the fediverse and always support efforts to have more autonomous means of social networking. Anyways, more about me: I'm almost four years into HRT and trying to keep a footing in writing. (I have four short poetry books and a sporadic blog under my belt so far.) So much is going on over the existence of people like me that it puts me in depressive stupors disabling me from finding the words for the feels. But I'm carrying on as best as a girl can. I'm almost always making notes for projects, so that's something. Primary interests of mine are history, literature, free/open source technology, anarchist theory, pagan spirituality and pantheons, cannabis as a medicinal treatment (and politics relating to its complete legalization), horticulture, hiking, ecology and armed self-defense. I play a few PC games like the Half-Life series, The Elder Scrolls series, different shooters and RPGs, but I'm not as much of a massive gamer as my partner is. I mostly listen to crust punk / d-beat / grindcore / mincecore, very much identifying with that section of punk culture, but like most people I also listen to just about everything. Joy Division, Interpol, Killing Joke, Fields Of Nephilim, Sisters Of Mercy, She Past Away, In This Moment, Pixies, REM, Gillian Welch and Kossoy Sisters just to name some from my spotify. All that said, I hope this finds everyone well and that you all have an outstanding day :) Mastodon

Hi all, I've also recently joined Beehaw from reddit. Im a queer AuDHD agender person originally from the Solomon Islands but now living in Australia.

I'm a single parent to an almost 2 year old who is obsessed with dinosaurs, dogs and babies. My kid is amazing but OMG toddlers!

I spent most of my career working in community services mostly with communities who experience significant systemic discrimination but recently moved into IT. I'm still working not for profit but now in the IT team.

While I was studying my IT degree I did a minor in Internet Communications and got offered post grad to research, simply, community, power and politics online. I turned it down because I needed to make some money and didnt think becoming an academic would achieve that (and also i was about to have a baby) but now I'm watching the shit show that is reddit and thinking about what a great thesis it would make!

I'm excited to participate more on the platform without the fear of harassment I often had on other platforms. The rules and values of beehaw make me a lot more comfortable to post.

[–] Skelectus@suppo.fi 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Edit: Accidental post.

[–] NoraReed@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Hi, I'm Nora! I'm a queer jeweler and I make funny bots sometimes. I am into tabletop games, leftism, colors, dragons, etc.
