Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

It's upside-down world here, people. Downvoted away, that is the true hallmark of an unpopular opinion.

I think what people get wrong is that any statement that would get downvotes in other communities must necessarily get upvotes in this one. That's not how it works.

"Pizza tastes better without cheese" is an unpopular opinion.

"I think we should all pee on people whenever we feel like it" is just the ramblings of an insane person. It's unpopular sure, but it's insane. It's trivial to make these.

"I dislike x race" is just racist. It can also be unpopular but if it were allowed this community would just be a racist community.

That's how I vote, if someone is just there to troll or be stupid then downvote.

Unpopular implies that the opposing position is popular - meaning that lots of people consciously hold that opinion.

For a less disgusting example, "everybody should eat bananas" is an uncommon opinion but it's not unpopular because "nobody should eat bananas" is not a common opinion

Another one I saw on here was trying to argue against a fact by calling it an unpopular opinion. And then trying to say “well it’s just a conspiracy theory”. Arguing against a fact isn’t an opinion, it’s just flat out wrong.

This isn't an unpopular opinion, it doesn't make it a right one though. For example I have no incentive to upvote this.

I think the most upvoted ones tend to be unpopular ones that are funny in some way, or ones that provoke interesting discussion (regardless of if it's popular).

There is a large difference between factually incorrect and unpopular opinion. Downvotes are more of an indication posts are incorrect facts, not unpopular opinions. Even popular opinions end up generating discussion. The original design of the voting system was to up vote stuff worth seeing and talking about.

Downvoted to help your case 🫡

I think we need to downvote this to hell.

Unsure if meta post, or actual opinion; probably both.

¿Por qué no los dos?

Sometimes I feel like "Hot Takes" would be a more appropriate name for this community

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 2 points 8 months ago

They would still be downvoted. Unless it was a sub of screenshots of someone else's hot take so the audience can make fun of them.

Controversial is the best way to sort for unpopular opinions that may have some validity.

Even in an unpopular opinion community it’s always the generic circle jerk popular opinions that rise to the top.

I feel like I'm taking sane pills!

[–] xc2215x@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

Yeah. That usually tends to be the case.

I posted an opinion about blockchain technology and it got downvoted which is exactly representative of the sentiment. Truly unpopular opinions here get downvoted.
