I am more interested in why they are called "tank tops." They don't resembles any part of a tank, much less the top.

I’ve tried using “a-shirt” in the US for the reasons mentioned but it seems like no one knows what I mean until I say “wife beater.”

They really fell out of popularity here. I'm the only one of my peers I know who wears them at all. They definitely imply trashy with some crowds.
