Muchas gracias for giving folks a place to land when everything else blew up. I'm sorry to hear how things have been going offline and I hope you and the whole team have smooth sailing ahead.

From a content UI perspective I guess this is why I would lean in preference towards Lemmy. It's pretty quick to figure out how to locate and browse similar content.

That said I will be up front about not having dived deeply into Sharkey to figure out all the potential that's there to make it do things in a way I'd prefer. Though perhaps that's a point against it as well, since it may take more work to get it functioning like that.

Depends on what you're making. There's nothing worse than under seasoned dishes. Freshly ground black pepper is a versatile ingredient that compliments many other flavors, but it's hardly a requirement for everything. I keep two spice mills on the counter, one with black peppercorns, and the other with white, because there's many things that can benefit from one or the other.

I think this would be a fair change and compromise.

Because logged in users can toggle both the NSFW Blur and the Auto Expand in their account settings it doesn't seem as if it would significantly negatively effect current account holder users.

I suppose if there's a userbase that utilizes the site without an account or without being logged in on a regular basis this could hamper their experience, but I guess that's where the big question is. Would such a change effect the conversion of non-account holding users to account holding users on a positive, negative, or neutral basis?

I'm no marketing or analytics person so I wouldn't know what sort of data would be needed to determine that, and if it's even available in the current site version, but either way I don't think there's any way to tell other than making the change and seeing what happens.

I appreciate the information.

I wasn't sure how much of all of that was automatic by default, and how much required manual intervention.

Might be they didn't mean to de-federate, might be the site update they ran a few days ago accidentally rolled back their list. I'll keep an eye on it for any changes on their end, and if they don't de-federate again after a week or two, see about creating an account so I can verify.

Thanks.

So if a community on the list above were to re-federates burggit.moe, would that community then have search/subscription functionality restored automatically?

I had subscribed to a few of the yiffit.net communities, which are on the list above. They are no longer on my sub list, and don't come up in a search.

However burggit.moe still shows up on https://yiffit.net/instances

So I'm not sure if that signifies a potential technical issue, or if the whole federated thing is still a bit of a manual process so it's possible they did defederate burggit, but their instances list is just out of date.

I did try clearing cache & cookies for both sites just in case, but that did not appear to be the issue.
