The issue is a lot of teetotalers don't drink anything because of their existing health conditions, really bad obesity, hypertension, liver problems, etc. So those that don't drink at all are actually less healthy than the average population, and those that drink in moderation are obviously healthier than those who drink a lot. So the results look like moderate drinking is the most healthy but there's an (or a lot of) omitted variable bias.

It's worth noting that not only did I not have to create this meme, I didn't have to Google that hard to find it.

Plastics may degrade, but (as others have mentioned) if a plastic one lasts 10+ years

Micro plastics can be released as soon as a water bottle is first filled. This isn't the structural integrity of the plastic failing, it's your endocrine system and who knows what else being affected by tiny pieces of plastic that start shedding immediately.

Look, I'm not saying this isn't a cash grab because the serial inventor who made the aero press sold a controlling stake in his company and the new firm is squeezing as much money out as they can before the patent expires, BUT some of us do care about micro plastics. Not that I give my daughter coffee, but now that I have a toddler we've eliminated as much food related plastic as we can.

Stuff is genuinely damaging and yet we keep using it because it's convenient. And people wonder why the Romans used lead containers.

We got married in DC and saved so much money on locations. We booked the Jefferson memorial 6 months in advance for like $50 (saved a couple thousand), and a boathouse on the Potomac for $800 (saved 8-20 grand) because we knew someone - wedding still cost like 33k. We were so cognizant of cost too - no flowers at all, DJ instead of a band, bought our own booze, etc.

I think people don't realize how much more expensive cities are, and also do a terrible job accounting for all the true costs of things. Food was obviously the bulk of it and other big things like booze, rings... But I kept impeccable records, and what really added up was the little $100 here, $300 there things. Hotel and plane tickets for destitute father-in-law, all the meals at restaurants you're taste testing to see if you wanna have the rehearsal dinner there, tips, food while the bridal party is getting ready, gifts for bridal party, the officiant, etc etc.

I wouldn't trade it for the money back because I'm notoriously cheap, so I pinched and saved and was super proud of our wedding's price to quality ratio, but I'd be lying if I said the final tally wasn't super painful and didn't delay our house a bit. It worked out in the end, though. Thanks interest rates!

What's crazy is "Fred" used to mean the exact, literal opposite. It's the only word I know of that has come to mean the full opposite of what it meant (except maybe "literally", but that's usually used for emphasis)

Fred used to mean the dude who showed up in jeanshorts on a huffy, who everyone was like "are you sure you want to join the group ride?", and then he ends up pulling the pack the whole way. Somewhere along the line it ended up meaning dentist, which is the slow dude who buys all the expensive gear. I literally don't understand it.

I just replaced the honk in my car today, so I can assure you they very much do.

In related news, Subaru has yet to do a recall on a very important safety device going bad, despite the Internet being awash with 2016-2018 Outbacks having bad clocksprings. At least it's a relatively easy fix.

Ah, gotcha. Well, best of luck. I'll let you know what I think when my beta invite comes in. Still waiting.

Have you looked at direct integration with Garmin Connect? My guess is they and probably Fitbit have the huge majority of the market.

[–] drphungky@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

I'm actually dumb and my Garmin tracks my steps, so I DO know exactly how many I take (27,689 weekly). Damn I need to use my treadmill desk more consistently. That's low.

I saw in other comments wearables don't work. That's kind of a bummer. I like to leave my phone charging on my desk and let the watch track.

I signed up, happy to try it out and give feedback. No idea what my average number of steps is because I don't super care about that, but I'd expect it to go way up if I suddenly did care (through a gamified app).

FreeCAD is free and parametric. It's what I use after Fusion changed their subscriptions around. I don't need to be forced into a subscription once I put in the time to learn how software works, thank you very much.

If there's one thing makers have, it's a lot of stuff. Both tools to create things, and created thing themselves! I'm really curious what storage solutions everyone has used. We're thinking about a furniture/house rearranging and I'm going to need to commit to a system soon.

I've looked at #gridfinity (https://gridfinity.xyz/) and it seems ok, but definitely skewed more toward the small parts, electronic components and 3d printing world. I have a lot of woodworking tools, fasteners and hardware and home DIY stuff as well as electronics, so I need a much more holistic solution. Right now I'm leaning towards a French cleat system along a couple walls and just building custom shelves/boxes for big stuff and then trying to find a way to organize all my smart parts and just attach that system to the cleats, but I definitely want to see more ideas. I've looked at Harbor Freight boxes and some custom 3d printed solutions, but post your organization systems here!

Like I said yesterday, trying to get some content on here while we wait on more creators to join. But if you haven't found his channel yet, basically everything Under Dunn does is gold.

Stumbled upon this on YouTube and thought it might fit here, but happy to hear the community's thoughts on if bushcraft fits into Making. Obviously I believe in a wide tent, and what is bushcraft if not outdoor Making with basic tools?

Full disclosure: I'm literally just stealing content from Reddit so there's some stuff to browse here while the user base builds up. I didn't create this, but luckily there's a Thingiverse link so you don't have to give them traffic if you don't want to or you're like me and can't after June (mobile user).

But anyway, I love simple little usable 3d prints like this. Figurines are cool, but function over form is like my personal printing preference.

Like many people, I am a refuge from Reddit as well. I had a nice multireddit set up on RIF Is Fun that I'd love to duplicate here. Think 3d printing and microcontrollers, woodworking, DIY, and physical creations of all kinds. I'd be thrilled to see knife-making posts right next to an automated pet feeder next to hand-crafted furniture.
