sigh

So I work for a large enterprise type software with a database. And because our installer is trash, we don't trust clients to do it. It's very common for the installer to error out with SQL error messages and we have to go fix things in the database. Think stupid things like if a value is null in one field, installer crashes.

So they call in, get paperwork for a test upgrade (we require they upgrade a test database first), then after they email that paperwork and it's approved by management, the call to schedule the test appointment happens. Then 3 days before the actual appointment, we can call them and transfer via Bomgar the files they need. Because we don't wanna give them the needed files early for... reasons never explained properly to me.

Then the actual install/upgrade call happens.

Then we do it all over again for the live.

Welcome to corporate policy that's been building over 20 years, and never cut back. Things get added to the install process, never removed.

My brain instantly picked up a lot of reasonable things.

"Maybe they are making a mod for a game and can't fine good mulch assets"

Like I accepted a random person needed mulch so quickly.

A lot of the devs went way outside their comfort zone to make these games, and all feedback/rating would be super appreciated! Also a good way to learn about how games can be made blind accessible!

It's a website that lets you sort amazon by price per ounce/pound/count

https://bangyourbuck.com/

Some examples are:

Cheapest rice per pound https://bangyourbuck.com/search/rice/Lb/US/grid

Cheapest batteries by count: https://bangyourbuck.com/search/aa%20batteries/Count/US/grid

Hard drives by terabyte: https://bangyourbuck.com/search/hard%20drive/Terabyte/US/grid

Been using it for months, and I can't stand using Amazon without it now.

In the US it's not crazy for kids maybe as young as 6 to make themselves sandwiches like a PB&J/Ham & Cheese either if parents have an emergency, or to take to lunch for themselves because parents didn't have time. (Or you know, they're neglectful)

So is there a go to food for children to make in other cultures?

EDIT: Sorry for phrasing it like teaching 6 year olds to cook is mainly to help parents. Personal experience of dad going to prison and mom working 12 hour days at early age shined through. So me being taught to cook wasn't "This is a skill that'll be useful as you grow older" but instead was a "Things are going to be rough, and sometimes things won't work out with me being there when I need too, and I want you to be able to be okay in an emergency". So cooked myself food when I was little probably a lot more than others, then when I was a teenager I was cooking dinner for the family a lot.

But makes sense it wasn't the case for others! Still the curious, what other cultures teach their children to cook!

The people who say they need 3 cups of black coffee to start their day are just addicts with a high tolerance that experience mild withdrawal symptoms each morning.

If you feel like that, it's your body crying for you to take a break.

If you like an occasional cup of coffee or energy drink to get through something, then that's fine. But if you ever feel like one isn't working like it used to, you should take a break from caffeine to reset your tolerance, not up the dosage like an addict.

In Utah County the cheapest "House" for sale is 600 square feet, 2 bed, 1 bath, at $300k.

So at current interest rate it would be $1,800 a month mortgage(assuming you put the 60k down payment! A decent amount more if you do 3% down.)

The cheapest condo/town in utah valley is 205k, 1,100 square feet, on a 400 square foot lot. But due to a $500 HOA fee the monthly cost is still 1,700 a month (assuming 20% down).

With 3.5% down they'd both be closer to 2.1k +PIMI.

So yeah, how is where you live doing?

[-] ericbomb@lemmy.world 34 points 4 months ago

Heck yeah! Me and my GF I feel like are a good example of this.

I use an escooter because I work from home, and my favorite grocery stores and dr office are within a mile. I'm also about 3 miles from a train station that goes up and down utah valley, so I see no reason for a car. I uber once every other month like when I needed to get something large to the post office.

My GF is a CNA that does free lancing. So it's not unusual for her to have to drive an hour to the middle of nowhere with a shift that ends/starts in the middle of the night. A car just makes sense for her.

But people like me using micromobility/public transit means there are less cars on the road, less cars taking up parking, and even reducing the price of cars.

Went to a movie theater and saw a trailer for a movie where I was interested in the first 30 seconds of it, but the trailer then showed what looked like something probably from the last 10 minutes and spoiled the entire movie, so lost all interest.

So what movies come to mind as having done really good, where it makes you interested and gives you an idea of the movie, but doesn't ruin any big reveals?

Who needs medical attention when have lots of dogs?

I mean a pound of beef costs $4.

A pound of raw lentils like a $1.

Lentils are more calorie dense.

Lentils are more protein dense.

Black beans are in similar camp.

Rice and wheat products are cheaper per calorie, but lack the protein.

So yeah, it's just cheaper to be a vegetarian, even with massive beef subsidiaries. But veggie patties are still more expensive because of processing and they are smaller batches.

[-] ericbomb@lemmy.world 37 points 9 months ago

Oh yeah I 100% spend less on food as a vegetarian, because black beans/lentils are such wonderful cheap sources of protein.

But sometimes I want like the premade like meat crumbles or burgers, and those cost more usually.

[-] ericbomb@lemmy.world 39 points 9 months ago

Where in the WORLD did you hear that bit of propaganda?

https://agriculturefairnessalliance.org/news/2020-farm-subsidies/

https://scet.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/CopyofFINALSavingThePlanetSustainableMeatAlternatives.pdf

https://www.aier.org/article/the-true-cost-of-a-hamburger/

https://www.ewg.org/news-insights/news/2022/02/usda-livestock-subsidies-near-50-billion-ewg-analysis-finds

I can't even find any source saying more money is spent on any crop than on beef. It seems like it's totally made up. The numbers vary because it's hard to pin down, but I can't find a source saying anything besides "most subsidiaries go towards beef and dairy"

[-] ericbomb@lemmy.world 34 points 9 months ago

Also isn't he making a whole other game???

Like, this is Brandon Sanderson level of "I relax from working on my projects by working on another project"

Thank you for answering how you feel.

How you feel is wrong. But it's still appreciated.
