Swimming! The summer heat is here (it was 98F/36C today) and the neighborhood pool is open, so there is no better place to be in the afternoons.

I had never seen one of these before today. They're great. Way better than reaching for a single pole in a crowded car and wrapping your hand around some stranger's fingers. And If you have the whole thing to yourself you can hook your arm through it.

I was excited to ride to work today in the sunny spring weather. Then I saw the wind forecast. No thank you, I'll pass. I ride directly into the wind on my commute home, and am completely exposed the whole way.

Edit: For people who use proper units, 43 miles/hour is 69 km/hour.

What do the users in this community think about possibly migrating over to !map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz and locking this community? While there's nothing wrong with having multiple communities for a topic, I feel like a consolidated community would be more fun and possibly get more overall engagement. And !mapporn@lemmy.world is clearly the quieter of the two based on the number of posts and active users.

I'm curious to hear your opinions!

This is a 7-part series of blog posts, written by a history professor, contrasting the realities of ancient Sparta with it's depictions in popular culture.

Sorry, the connection was choppy. Can you say that again?

If we work together we can stay one step ahead of the orphan crushing machine!

The end-of-year numbers aren't in yet, but 2023 should be the year that wind and solar finally generate more electricity than coal here in the US.
https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/report/BTL/2023/02-genmix/article.php

For new generation projects coming online in 2023, 86% of the electricity is from non-fossil sources. The generation capacity that was retired in 2023 was all fossil based.

Great quote from a Slate op-ed: “You can often protect your client against the government, but you can never protect him against himself.”

We are homeschooling one of our kids because his particular needs were not being met by the local school. Meeting other homeschool families is always nerve-wracking for me. I never know if they're going to be a normal family adapting to an unusual situation, or tinfoil-hat nuts using homeschool as an excuse to hide their children from the outside world.

Loans aren't the problem. Insane loan debt is a symptom of an unsustainable higher education system.

You can learn a lot on your own, but many careers require a formal education (medicine, law, engineering, etc.). By itself, banning student loans within our current system merely makes it harder for poorer people to attain those careers.

I had the same thought and hesitated before posting this, but the facial expressions on the women really made the image and I couldn't help myself. Especially the woman on the right with blue sleeves.

TL;DR, the AG asked for a bench trial, Trump's defense team didn't respond, and so Trump gets a bench trial. It's possible that a jury trial would have been disallowed in this particular case under New York law, but the defense didn't even bother to ask.

Whelp, that's on your people, Donald. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
