Chapter 52

Communities in northern Nigeria have been experiencing prolonged dry spells worsened by climate change and excessive rainfall that leads to severe flooding during the brief wet season.

In videos and photos on social media, floodwaters covered neighborhoods and homes were submerged, with their roofs barely visible above the brown colored waters. Waist-deep in water, residents tried to salvage what they could, or rescue others.

this is an ongoing disaster related to the previous post https://sopuli.xyz/post/27979991

Also because of its location just north of the equator, Nigeria's climate is characterized by the hot and wet conditions associated with the movement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) north and south of the equator.

When the ITCZ is to the south of the equator, the north-east winds prevail over Nigeria, producing the dry-season conditions. When the ITCZ moves into the Northern Hemisphere, the south westerly wind prevails far inland to bring rainfall during the wet season.

The result is a prolonged rainy season in the far south of Nigeria, while the far north undergoes long dry periods annually. Nigeria, therefore, has two major seasons, the dry season and the wet season, the lengths of which vary from north to south.

I’ve been a freelance journalist for 10 years, usually writing for magazines and websites about cinema. I presented a morning show on Radio Kraków twice a week for about two years. It was only one part of my work, but I really enjoyed it. It was about culture and cinema, and featured a range of people, from artists to activists. I remember interviewing Ukrainians about the Russian invasion for the first programme I presented, back in 2022.

I was let go in August 2024, alongside a dozen co-workers who were also part-time. We were told the radio station was having financial problems. I was relatively OK with it, as I had other income streams. But a few months later I heard that Radio Kraków was launching programmes hosted by three AI characters. Each had AI-generated photographs, a biography and a specific personality. They called it an “experiment” aimed at younger audiences.

A species that was hunted to local extinction made a comeback on its historical range, scientists who witnessed the population recovery via satellite imagery said.

The wolverine, listed as endangered due to over-hunting in the 20th century, has returned to the forests of southern Finland, according to a paper published last month in Ecology and Evolution.

Wolverine populations are distributed throughout boreal regions in the northern hemisphere, including arctic and subarctic regions and western North America, the Wolverine Foundation noted.

Historically, in Europe, they could be found as far south as Norway, southern Sweden and northeast Poland. Today, wolverines are only found in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

In Finland, the wolverine was classified as endangered in the 1980s. While they were known to have inhabited southern parts of the country as recently as the 19th century, hunting eradicated the species from the region, according to researchers at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland.

US immigration authorities are collecting and uploading the DNA information of migrants, including children, to a national criminal database, according to government documents released earlier this month.

The database includes the DNA of people who were either arrested or convicted of a crime, which law enforcement uses when seeking a match for DNA collected at a crime scene. However, most of the people whose DNA has been collected by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), the agency that published the documents, were not listed as having been accused of any felonies. Regardless, CBP is now creating a detailed DNA profile on migrants that will be permanently searchable by law enforcement, which amounts to a “massive expansion of genetic surveillance”, one expert said.

The DNA information is stored in a database managed by the FBI called the Combined DNA Index System (Codis), which is used across the country by local, state and federal law enforcement to identify suspects of crimes using their DNA data.

Wired first reported the practice and the existence of these documents, and estimates there are more than 133,000 migrant teens and children whose DNA has been collected and uploaded to Codis. One of them was just four years old.

Episode 40

The new study, published May 14 in the journal Earth's Future, looked at what would happen should global temperatures swell to 2.7 F (1.5 C), even for just a few decades.

Such an increase in global temperature could have a permanent impact on the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), a region near the equator where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet, the study found.

The ITCZ has a heavy influence on rainfall patterns, and the increase in global temperatures could cause it to shift south, changing the length and intensity of wet and dry seasons, especially in parts of Africa, the Amazon and Southeast Asia. Too much rain in some areas and not enough in others could have dire effects on agriculture, ecosystems and water availability for a major portion of the planet.

Choi Do-yeon, a gaming streamer struggling to make ends meet in a semi-basement rental, receives a game link from “Sakje-hyung,” a senior from his hometown and a fellow content creator who has always supported him. Without giving it much thought, he downloads [Heart-pounding Ghostly Poem], only to encounter eerie figures that should never have appeared. Before he can even process what’s happening, he finds himself trapped in a high-stakes dating simulation—with vengeful spirits.

Warning this series contains horror themes regarding ghosts and depictions of dismembered bodies that may make some readers feel uncomfortable.

Chapter 16

Brazilian prosecutors are suing Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD and two of its contractors, saying they were responsible for human trafficking and conditions "analogous to slavery" at a factory construction site in the country.

BYD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the BBC but has previously said it has "zero tolerance for violations of human rights and labour laws."

Authorities halted construction of the plant late last year after workers were found living in cramped accommodation with "minimum comfort and hygiene conditions", the MPT said.

Some workers slept on beds without mattresses and one toilet was shared by 31 people, it said in a statement.

The MPT also alleged that construction site staff had their passports confiscated and were working under "employment contracts with illegal clauses, exhausting work hours and no weekly rest."

Prosecutors said the workers had up to 70% of their salaries withheld and faced high costs to terminate their contracts.

"Slavery-like conditions", as defined by Brazilian law, include debt bondage and work that violates human dignity.

The shrinking of Alpine glaciers has destabilized entire mountain faces. Permafrost, which acts as the frozen glue holding rocks together at high altitudes, is thawing rapidly. Without it, gravel and boulders are loosened, making rockslides and glacier collapses like the one in Blatten not just possible but increasingly likely.

The collapse at Blatten serves as a stark visual metaphor for the broader climate crisis. Once-stable landscapes are becoming volatile, and traditional forecasting models can no longer keep pace with accelerating change.

For now, the focus remains on immediate rescue and relief. But as scientists and citizens alike grapple with the scale of the disaster, Blatten’s destruction will likely become a touchstone in the global conversation about climate resilience and preparedness.

In a world where glaciers are vanishing and mountain communities are becoming climate frontlines, Blatten is not an isolated tragedy—it is a warning.

I guess you're not wrong, could be the author took the character design from the manga.

I guess some webtoons have good storylines, so I keep reading them every week.

tbh, I never bothered to tell others about climate change and its consequences to our lives.

Back then I told my relatives, and they just looked at me like "are you out of your mind?"

not sure about apps, but dnscrypt-proxy has this option

I used this when I found out one of my coworkers was using my work laptop to play online games.

also M$ has done deliberately

“Although about 3 million computers get sold every year in China, people don’t pay for the software. Someday they will, though,” Gates told an audience at the University of Washington. “And as long as they’re going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They’ll get sort of addicted, and then we’ll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade.”

There are good reasons why you should limit yourself from using cloud based services. Even you are paying for the service, they can change ToS however they want.

And free cloud services the worst of it all, because they want to take all your data., they don't even care if it's a confidential company document.

oh great news!!

I remember some people kept mocking Linux desktops for lack of HDR support, which was strange because they were also using Linux for application development purposes.
