Has anyone considered developing a federated, open-source alternative to platforms like:

Google Earth,

Magic Earth,

Google Maps,

Waze,

Here WeGo,

Sygic GPS,

OsmAnd,

etc.?

Imagine a decentralized platform where individuals and organizations can host, contribute, and share mapping, weather, navigation, geospatial data, etc. —fully in the spirit of the Fediverse.

Key Features Could Include:

• Decentralized hosting of map tiles, satellite imagery, and user-contributed data
• Federated sharing of points of interest, routes, and real-time traffic
• Privacy-focused navigation and offline capabilities
• Integration with existing open data sources (e.g., OpenStreetMap)
• Extensible with plugins for specialized uses (hiking, cycling, accessibility, etc.)

Why This Matters:
Current navigation and mapping platforms are largely centralized, raising concerns about privacy, data ownership, and censorship. A federated approach would empower communities, ensure data resilience, and foster innovation—much like Mastodon, Lemmy, PeerTube, etc. have done for social media and video.

Personal Note:
I’d love to help build something like this, but I currently lack the time, expertise, and energy. Still, I wanted to float the idea and see if others in the Fediverse community are interested or already working on similar projects.

IPF is rapidly progressive and causes scarring in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. Approximately 50% of patients die within three years of diagnosis, and current treatments can only slow the disease—not stop or reverse it.

In healthy lungs, specialized cells called fibroblasts help repair lung tissue. But in people with IPF, some fibroblasts and nearby epithelial cells stop functioning properly. These so-called "senescent" cells no longer divide or die as they should. Instead, they build up and contribute to stiff, scarred lungs.

Tulane researchers discovered that these senescent cells appear to accumulate when the immune system's natural ability to remove them is blocked. The culprit: a protein called CTLA4, which acts as an emergency brake on immune system activity.

By using ipilimumab—an immunotherapy drug currently used to treat various cancers—the researchers were able to block CTLA4 in mice. This released the "brakes" on certain immune cells called T cells, reactivating their ability to clear out the senescent fibroblasts.

Florida officials first became aware that Centene owed the state money in 2021. At the time, Ohio, Mississippi and other states were reaching settlements with the Medicaid giant after it overbilled for prescription drugs.

The overbilling was uncovered by politically connected Mississippi law firms, which helped states negotiate settlements with Centene in exchange for millions of dollars in contingency fees, the New York Times reported last year.

The data the law firms used to calculate how much each state was owed is hidden from the public, the Times reported, making it impossible to know whether Centene paid its full share.

Florida signed on with one of the firms, Liston & Deas, in December 2021. Months earlier, other lawyers working with the firm on the Centene settlements donated $100,000 to the Republican Party of Florida and $10,000 to then-Attorney General Ashley Moody’s political committee.
