Trump judge shopped and had Khalil sent to Louisiana. The first few paragraphs.

A Louisiana immigration judge ruled Friday that activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported.

Khalil, who as a Columbia University graduate student led pro-Palestinian protests there last year, was detained last month after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he had determined that Khalil's activism was antisemitic and that allowing him to remain in the country would undermine a U.S. foreign policy goal of combatting antisemitism around the world.

During a hearing at the remote Louisiana detention center where Khalil is being held, Judge Jamee Comans said she had no authority to question Rubio's determination.

After the ruling, Khalil told the judge, "I would like to quote what you said last time that there's nothing that's more important to this court than due process rights and fundamental fairness. Clearly what we witnessed today, neither of these principles were present today or in this whole process.

"This is exactly why the Trump administration has sent me to this court, 1,000 miles away from my family," he added. "I just hope that the urgency that you deemed fit for me are afforded to the hundreds of others who have been here without hearing for months."

Khalil will not immediately be deported. His attorneys have said that if he were ordered deported, they would appeal the judge's ruling. Comans gave Khalil until April 23 to request a stay of his deportation if his attorneys believe he qualifies for one. And the judge said if they don't meet that deadline, she will order him deported either to Syria, where he was born, or to Algeria, where he is a citizen.

On March 28, Beirut’s southern Dahiya suburb was targeted with four Israeli airstrikes on the neighborhood of Hadath — the first attack on Beirut since the truce in November 2024. A residential building, which housed a number of Lebanese families, was left completely flattened by the airstrikes.

“The entire building is gone. The only thing left is cement and glass,” a local business owner told Mondoweiss. “We were sitting with our grandchildren when we heard the airstrikes and saw people running and screaming.” Hours later, smoke still billowed from the ash and rubble as recovery efforts continued.

Residents of Hadath communicated a sense of unease that existed among residents of Dahiya, even before the airstrikes. One woman explained that Israel’s ongoing attacks against South Lebanon were never far from people’s minds. “Many of us felt as though this attack was inevitable, and that Israel wouldn’t spare Dahiya. The ceasefire doesn’t exist for South Lebanon, and it doesn’t exist for the people of the suburb. Where any of our people exist, Israel sees a target.”

“We want Israel to know one thing: that this will not keep us from the path of resistance,” a young man told Mondoweiss. “Do not think that we are afraid, no. We have put our faith in God and in our resistance.”

It is this sharpened confidence that has moved the people of Dahiya forward on what they describe as the “path of resistance” — one that has no shortcuts and has forced them to confront the brutality of the United States’ foremost vassal state in the region. To many, the battle is an unfinished one, and those loyal to Hezbollah remain posed in a state of preparedness for whatever comes next.

As of Thursday, April 10, 20 international students at the City University of New York (CUNY) have had their visas revoked by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Per a statement released by the university, they face a “change in visa status” — with no clear explanation. This attack follows the escalating situation at Columbia University where five visas and two green cards have been revoked so far.

CUNY is one of the largest public university systems in the United States with 25 campuses serving each borough of New York City. The student body at CUNY is heavily represented by working-class and immigrant students. Visa revocations were also reported at the State University of New York (SUNY), another public university, as well as at New York University.

All of these campuses have been at the center of the movement for Palestine, fighting against the genocide, as well as to divest our institutions from the State of Israel.

Since the green card revocation and detainment of Columbia University alumnus Mahmoud Khalil last month, over 300 student visas at universities across the U.S. have been revoked. Many are the result of a direct attack on free speech in support of Palestine but a lot more have not been supported by any evidence or reason from the DHS or the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

"A teenager described by his family as autistic remains in critical condition after being shot in his backyard by Idaho police last weekend. Video taken by a witness showed Pocatello police shooting the boy as he approached them with a knife from the other side of a chain-link fence."

Watch the video, went down exactly as described, except far worse.

This is what you're risking when you call the police. Here's my latest tale, probably be dead if I wasn't a middle-aged white guy:

Hey all,

Today, I’m writing to share our intention to join Fedecan, a Canadian not-for-profit organization committed to supporting the Fediverse. We believe this partnership will foster collaboration among like-minded individuals who share a common goal: to create a safe, welcoming space where people can connect freely.

Together we will help deliver a fast, reliable, and consistent experience for all and continue to be free from corporate influence and guided by the values of openness, community, and trust.

Who is Fedecan

Fedecan is a registered non-profit organization based in Canada, with the goal to provide a safe and welcoming space for people to connect with each other on the Fediverse. More information can be found here.

You may also know them by their Canadian lemmy instance lemmy.ca.

What does this mean for sh.itjust.works?

From the outside everything will stay much the same, especially with the admin team. Internally, we will collaborate on tasks related to non-profit compliance, policies, banking and common infrastructure elements such as backup/disaster recovery infrastructure. We will continue to operate separate equipment and instances in geographically isolated locations under different names. We will work towards aligning on safety and security practices in order to ensure that data is secure.

From an organizational structure, sh.itjust.works will fall under the Fedecan umbrella and will share common bylaws, policies, methodologies on best practices, security and legal considerations.

Where do donations go?

Donations to sh.itjust.works will continue to support our mission and objectives exclusively. However, users will also have the option to donate directly to Fedecan, which will allocate funds amongst its projects including sh.itjust.works. Operational costs related to running the non-profit will be shared among projects and these expenses will be transparently disclosed in annual reports published on the Fedecan website.

Option to withdrawal

sh.itjust.works will have the right to withdraw from the Fedecan umbrella should our mutual goals no longer be aligned. In such a case, a predefined provision and action plan will be in place to ensure a smooth transition back to independence.

Why Now?

As the Fediverse continues to grow, we believe it's important to collaborate more closely with others who share our values. Joining Fedecan allows us to do just that, strengthening our operation through a non-profit while staying true to our mission.

Timeline / Next Steps

Over the coming weeks, we'll begin the process of integrating with Fedecan on the organization side. You won't notice many changes but we'll keep you informed throughout the process.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited about this next chapter and the opportunities it brings. By joining forces, we’re reinforcing our commitment to the Fediverse and to the principles that brought us all together in the first place—openness, community, transparency, and trust.

Our core mission remains unchanged. We're still independent in spirit and practice and we remain committed to being a space that's not driven by profit, but by people.

I invite your questions or concerns on this thread or on our https://matrix.to/#/#sh.itjust.works:matrix.org)

Stay connected,

--The sh.itjust.works and Fedecan Team
