Hi Everyone,

We are looking for another person to help out moderating AskLemmy. Home instance does not matter, and Accounts will need to have a history of positive contribution to Lemmy.

DM or reach out via Matrix if interested.

My husband implemented the four-day workweek (4 days / 10 hours) for his company in 2024 and it proves to be popular with the employees. I know there are many workweek variations, so I'm curious which one you'd prefer the most.

Context is that I had to register for a lot of accounts recently and some of the rules really make no sense.

Not name-and-shaming, but the best one I've seen recently is I might have accidentally performed an XSS attack on a career portal using a 40-digit randomly generated password...

My least favourite day has to be Wednesday because it's still in the middle of the week, you get two more days to battle through and it just feels like it won't ever end.

Monday I can deal with because you know it's only the start, Tuesday it's meh for me.

Thursday I'm okay cos I'm gearing up for Friday and the weekend.

What about you?

Idk if it's because of my ADHD or Depression but I struggled my whole life with finding a healthy balance to all these temptations that this world offers.

I'm 21 years old now (and a male) and I feel like this is now stronger than ever. It could be worse because these temptations might've become more and stronger or it's the fact that becoming an adult feels so overwhelming to me because of all the freedoms that come with all these responsibilities of managing and balancing/limiting everything yourself.

I find it so hard to restrict/discipline myself since there are so many temptations in this consumer oriented world. Even though I know that most of the stuff isn't good for me, it feels impossible to have the discipline to not go after it/escape it.

And often I have this inner conflict of not knowing what the right decision is and if I should do what my inner child desperately wants because it feels like it will easily give me the happiness that I'm seeking for my life and that I can't miss out on it (but it might as well be an illusion and will only make my life worse) or if I should not go after that to potentially become long-term successful/happy but with the big possibility of failing anyways (which is why I don't go after the second option most of the time since it seems like an unachievable illusion to me since I always fail anyways).

Idk if this has something to do with capitalism and wonder if it might be different in non capitalistic societies or if they have the same problem. Because it seems like everything in this world is designed to get people to buy/consume it. I feel like the world just sees me as a dollar sign and wants to milk every penny out of me without caring what this does to my health. Like a trap.

I know we're supposed to be responsible for our own actions but it seems that it is made so hard to the point where its almost impossible to do. I mean it is well known through insiders, whistleblowers but also the industry itself that these big companies hire psychiatrists and neurologists to make all these products such as social media as addictive as possible since engagement and attention span is key for them. And they are well aware about the downsides and affects to peoples health but they don't care cause they only care about the money. It's like they intentionally make us sick for their greedy benefits.

It's like there are all these doors for entering escapism, they're all around me and are screaming that I need to go in. And since I already feel so miserable it seems impossible to not enter the doors cause they're the easiest way of escaping the misery and somehow getting through the day.

It's so hard to get out and live a life outside off these temptations cause they're everywhere and give you this easy and fast pleasure that's craved by our simple primate brains.

There's constantly new stuff like addictive food, toxic media and technologies, new consoles, games and so on.

It seems to me that the world is designed to put us down instead of lifting us up. And it feels impossible to escape it since I'm too weak to overcome all these external things that are designed against me.

Am I the only one who feels like this? What are your thoughts on this? How much could this be a personal issue and how much could it be societal related?

I've always dreamt of waking in a magic forest. And I mean like, no explanation. Just Poof I'm there, kinda thing. I think a lot of it stems from games like Zelda or any RPG.

I have heard from multiple people that eye contact is essential in letting a girl (or guy, I guess) know you're interested.

But what is the 411 when it comes to said eye contact? Do you keep looking until she does? Do you then keep staring? Or is like looking at the sun? What's the deal?

I heard a bunch of explanations but most of them seem emotional and aggressive, and while I respect that this is an emotional subject, I can't really understand opinions that boil down to "theft" and are aggressive about it.

while there are plenty of models that were trained on copyrighted material without consent (which is piracy, not theft but close enough when talking about small businesses or individuals) is there an argument against models that were legally trained? And if so, is it something past the saying that AI art is lifeless?

Will we know why had universe began, why there is something instead of nothing.

Of course it's not an explicit expectation, but the news cycle is dominated by a mix of 24/7 news and daily summaries. It's rare that I see weekly, bi-weekly, monthly summaries. I'm thinking, is there really that much that can happen in a day and that warrants our attention? Most news are clickbait focused on the negative, making us feel depressed and feeds our negative emotions. I wouldn't be surprised if the news actively contributes to the mental health crisis.

At the same time I think it can be of importance to have some understanding on what's going on in one's local area, one's country and in the world. For me I think a weekly summary would be good balance, but those are weirdly hard to find. What are your thoughts?

And obviously "making use" of it. Daily? Weekly? Twice X month?

Every account you ever had, every post/comment you ever posted, now has your real name, a photo of you, and your address, all just magically show up on the webpage right next to each of your posts/comments (also, no "hacking" could hide the info). All deleted posts/comments are magically restored and nothing you do (short of permanently shutting down the website and physical destruction of the servers) can delete them. (Any edits would still show every change you made.) How fucked are you?

And don't think about changing your name, or moving, all this info updates in real time. (for "magic" reason)

(You also cannot delete any future posts.)

I use a Linux distro with kde, so I have a lot of customization available. I like trying other distros in VMs, but stuff like windows (no need to copy really kde is similar by default) and Mac is a pain in the ass to use that way. so, I want to know what your os does that you think I should copy using kde's customization. I'm looking for Mac in particular (bc I haven't used it before) but any OS or desktop environment is fair game.

An acquaintance just posted a pic of them being absolutely delighted with building a snowman and I realized I haven't done that in years. It also made me think about things I enjoyed doing as a kid, and (whether it be from mental issues or not) I can't quite recall anything that brought me joy.

So I'm really just curious, what are other people's happy memories of their childhood? Might help me remember mine, and "worst" case I get to enjoy some good memories second-hand!

Edit: Couldn't be happier to have asked this question, not only are there some wholesome little stories, but I could also finally remember some of the good times of my childhood again!
