Yeah, I didn't suspect it was fake until it was explained to me that it was. I recall as a kid thinking my nose being blocked from allergies would be solved if I could just get what seemed to be a 4inch ball of snot out from behind my eyeballs, where in reality that was inflammation making the snot feel big, but I still believe kinda if I ever got this giant ball of mucus out then I'd never be stuffed up again.
That's pretty reasonable, your nerves can't tell whether your sinuses are getting painful pressure from mucus or inflammation.
And when you're blasting out mad mucus it makes even more sense. I totally get how we got to humors before germ theory.
Definitely, and even germ theory is like, not actually very accurate beyond the bare elements of needing some infectious microbe - it doesn't address how social conditions contribute to health with infectious diseases, account for asymptomatic carriers or has any awareness of the role of commensal bacteria, for example.
Yes it does
Happy for you to explain how with reference to classic germ theory.
Here is a good journal article that balances the critique of germ theory while dispensing with the idiotic alternative (i.e. that microbes* are not causative agents in infectious disease) - https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2319605121
*Is a prion a microbe? Fucking prions.
I had a dream once as a kid where I blew out a massive snot ball the size of my head and it felt amazing.
Deep down I'm still pretty sure everything wrong with me could be cured by expelling some sort of evil force that looks like Blight from Zelda Breath of the Wild and I will be immune from all ailment once it's gone
