Regular controller uses voltmeter with contact brushes to measure resistance to determine location. Because of contact motion, it does not last long. There used to be better joysticks that did not have contact brushes which enabled them to have much longer life. They were abandoned because they were expensive. For example, N64 uses such technology which is the reason why many of them still work today
Shockingly, the Xbox elite controllers use potentiometers and last a few years
