Mostly looking for a decent quality anyway in regards to button quality and comfort but the main thing is a good analogue stick with no dead zone and it means it. I mostly want it to play f zero x where tilt is crucial. Aside from that just generally decent is fine, but I need a good fidelity stick

That or something I can do to get a ps3 controller working on my computer thst isn't also a bunch of malware

The Chinese esports company BigBigWon is going to be announcing their new controllers at CES. Their Rainbow 2 Pro controller is used at tournaments and should be getting upgraded to Hall Effect this year. I think this is the best all round controller and is the only 2.4ghz pro controller with 4 programmable buttons (2 rear, 2 extra bumpers) and the headphone jack works both in wired and wireless mode. (Xbox shape).

The best controller just for hall effect at the moment though is probably the Flydigi Vader 4 Pro. Should never lose tension on the hall effect sticks ever, 6 programmable buttons (4 rear, 2 bonus face buttons near abxy). No headphone jack. (Xbox shape)

The freak controller is the Gamesir Tarantula with 8 programmable buttons, Hall Effect sticks, and there's a button that activates a motor to change the button layout between Nintendo and Xbox controllers which should be very useful for emulators (PlayStation shape).

Valve should be releasing an official Steam Deck Controller this year also.

For F-Zero I would probably get a Vader 4 Pro and use the long thumb stick for the left stick. Rainbow 2 Pro and Vader 4 have swappable thumbstick lengths.

PS4 controller, or PS5 controller. I've tried a lot of third party PC controllers, and there are some good mentions, but ultimately I've not found anything better than either of the last 2 Gen PlayStation controllers. I recommend the PS4 controller over the Ps5 controller, I think the newest Gen is a little over-engineered and has worse battery life as a consequence.

Just chiming in to say that my 8bitdo Ultimate which is less than a year old and has seen only mild use has stick problems. In particular, the max movement it can detect diagonally up and to the right is ~60% on the left stick. This can be corrected in *software, and resets if I disconnect and reconnect the controller. It's also had other issues, such as freezing inputs occasionally, or weirder things that are probably down to compatibility like occasionally just reading false A-inputs on its own but only in the upgrade select screen in Holocure, or interpreting "A" as "A, down, A, up" in one of the merchant screens for Halls of Torment.

I'm using an XBX1 controller and already had to replace one of the stick's little sensors (no soldering). I believe the mechanical sticks should have better dead zones but I'm imagining only slightly at this point and drift sucks so much that it's worth to get hall effect sticks.

Gulikit king Kong controllers also have hall effect sticks. You can get them off aliexpress and are decent for the money, I use one with my computer

if it's a windows pc xbox controllers work fine and dont need extra software

Played F Zero on an original x box controller and it was really floaty. Could be nice for grip cars cause it had a great sensitivity range but it was also a bit too big of a surface to move on. Maybe I'll just get an x box controller for most.ga.es abd a repro n64 controller for f zero.

yea i dont know what to tell you when it comes to fast racing games like that, im not into those games. alls i know is the xbox controller doesnt need extra malware, it has the right amount of malware as is.

I only play one but it's one that having the right stick makes a noticeable difference. It's built for an n64 controller and it's specific range of motion, sensitivity and the octagonal surrounding thingy helps a bit too. Ya gotta be able to nudge around and have a decently quick snap back to center.

Setting jank controllers aside, deadzone is just a sign of wear. These things don't last forever. If you find the perfect controller, just use it for a couple years. It will be shit. I have a pair of PS4 controllers I'm kind of happy with, but they are not perfect.

Regular controller uses voltmeter with contact brushes to measure resistance to determine location. Because of contact motion, it does not last long. There used to be better joysticks that did not have contact brushes which enabled them to have much longer life. They were abandoned because they were expensive. For example, N64 uses such technology which is the reason why many of them still work today

I think I'll just get an Xbox controller and eventually get a decent n64 controller repro for f zero. You really need that control stick or something close.

8bitdo also has a conversion mod kit for original n64 controllers to bluetooth (they advertise it working with android and switch). The cheaper $30 config is unavailable rn but the $40 one comes with a hall effect joystick, so you could even use one with a broken stick.

I'd think it would work with a PC with bluetooth as well, but it's possible it doesn't if they aren't claiming it does.

Edit: I did some googling, apparently it does work with PC as a Dinput controller. And people have described the stick as "very precise" but is somewhere between a GameCube-style control stick and an n64 one.
