The wild man has been a staple of European mythology for ages, and sees use in a lot of coats of arms. There's a few examples if you scroll down to the bottom here.
I knew of the wild man archetype, but didn't realize it was so popular on royal decorations and stuff. Fascinating!
I only learned about this recently myself, precisely because i thought "wait that has hella gay dudes rocking out energy, what's up with that?"
