I thought the defence of him was that letter that never got published, where he at the end of his life apologized for being so racist or something?
he was, arguably, on a positive trajectory but it would've been tough to make up for what he wrote or named his cat.
I mean, his wife used the term "xenophobe" to describe him after his death. I don't think she was convinced of any changes he'd made.
