Sometimes we forget why it was Portugal and Spain/Castille that went off to decide the world was theirs to split. They were huge kingdoms for the time and that meant the crown had huge resources at their disposal.

This is what Germany and italy should have looked like after WWI. 50% because it would have averted WWII, 50% because their national projects flattened hundreds of local cultures.

As a German I would not say that local cultures were flattened. Germany still has a lot of cultural differences.
