How you going to become a Pokemon master if you don't accept the challenges?

[-] deus@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago

You can't become the very best if you are dead, now can you?

[-] MustrumR@kbin.social 36 points 2 months ago

Loser mindset, skill issue.

[-] idunnololz@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

There is a legendary pokemon waiting to be caught at the top of the tornado.

Legendary flying cow

As a European, I find it insane to have an app that warns you about gunshots, like wtf

[-] ibt3321@lemmy.blahaj.zone 42 points 2 months ago

Most of the reports are unfounded in these apps. The EFF wrote about them: https://sls.eff.org/technologies/community-surveillance-apps

As a Chicago resident so do I. Just listen for the screams and shot reverberation off the nearby buildings. It doesn't take much practice to hone it down within 50yards or so. Don't need no app.

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 month ago

I've been to Chicago once (visiting a family member), it's absolutely crazy. I could never even imagine living like that. Never before in my life have I been genuinely scared that if I left the house at night, I wouldn't come back alive.

[-] chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 month ago

I've also been to Chicago once (going to an Anime con up there; was a meet up for AMV creators worldwide, and while I wasn't one my brother was), but it was a chill and nice experience for me. The last time I heard gunshots was actually this past new years, when my neighbor fired off like 12-15 shots during fireworks (GA, not in Atlanta but not too far either).

[-] hector@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

What is it like in Chicago? It’s really THAT bad?

(I’m an European)

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

It's pretty normal during the day, but at night, once you hear gunshots a few blocks away, I would really avoid going out. I've never seen something like this before.

[-] icydefiance@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

Statistically no, it's not very dangerous as far as big cities go. Its homicide rate is ranked 30-something in the USA. Pretty much every city has "bad areas", though.

[-] Brickardo@feddit.nl 20 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Also works by changing European by almost any nationality you wish

[-] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

hey now it's just philly

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago

As a gun-owning American, I agree with you.

It's not like the app only does that. It warns you about all emergency alerts in your area. https://citizen.com/

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 months ago

Yeah I know, but god damn just getting a notification about gunshots is fucking crazy

[-] Entropywins@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Listen to emergency/police scanners you might be surprised what goes on in your area...hopefully not though!!!

[-] efstajas@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I really wish I could but unfortunately in Germany all police chatter is encrypted, and even if you could run a scanner it's super illegal

[-] snf@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Is that specifically what it is? I thought it was just a news alert

[-] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Not an app, but here in Germany we have a public warning system that broadcasts an alert to all phones in an area in case of catastrophic events. Happened twice in my city since I moved here two years ago. Once for a mass shooting, and once for an accident at a chemical plant.

[-] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 months ago

I know about cell broadcast, it's common in many countries. But where the fuck do you live that you get so many alerts?

[-] thefartographer@lemm.ee 45 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Go PIKACHU, I choose you!

Shooter uses BULLETS! It's super effective!

[-] Vilian@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago

palmworld told me that using it as a shield and them shooting the enemy works, very well actually

[-] rimjob_rainer@discuss.tchncs.de 39 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Do you live in a war zone? Or just USA things?

[-] EmoDuck@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

Nah, it's just acorn season

[-] CatZoomies@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago

If Ash Ketchum can brave a thunderstorm to save Pikachu while being chased by murderous Spearow, and can tank a well-timed lightning strike without dying, your lazy ass better get outside, catch some Pokes, and hatch some Eggs.

Tick-tock, Trainer. I thought you wanted to be the very best!

[-] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 29 points 2 months ago

Did shooting at the tornado work?

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

But the tornado that's shooting people IS the rare Pokemon.

[-] Natanael@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 months ago

Tornadus used hurricane

[-] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Once you add 'shooting' I'm pretty sure it becomes a Digimon.

[-] VulKendov@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

Nevermind the turtle with cannons coming out of its shell.

[-] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Those are just big squirt guns, though. It's not like Blastoise fires bullets.

[-] VulKendov@reddthat.com 1 points 1 month ago

Gen 3 Pokédex says they shoot bullets of water, ther entries note that it can punch through thick steel, and the Let's Go games compare mega blastoise's cannon to that of a tank.

[-] danciestlobster@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Bullet seed would like a word with this sentiment

Pokemon Go To The Storm Bunker

to be fair, Pokemon was first

[-] fin@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago

Pokemon knew all those things will happen.

[-] Holzkohlen@feddit.de 6 points 1 month ago

Damn, did you emulate Pokemon red or smth?

[-] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

When the hell did Philly have a tornado warning?

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

~~Climate change~~

I read why, not when.

Apparently May 6, 2024 @ 4:24 am.

[-] naticus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

This was from 2 years ago by the looks of it (found a Reddit post of this from 2y ago, can't see the date on mobile though). It just was coincidental there was another one literally today too in the early morning hours.

Also a tornado warning will never last that long (over 15 hours), it's generally 15 to 30 min and very location specific. It may be longer if there's a long chain of storms all showing signs of active circulation on the way through, but anything over an hour is pretty rare, even in tornado alley.
