Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

lol, lmao

UK tryin to pretend it's a player in the modern tech world while paying people less than interns make in California

The entire UK is a country sized Potemkin Village set up by the United States to let the terf islanders live out their remaining days in peace while the rest of the world kindly plays along.

“You know back in my day the sun never set on our glorious empire”

Oh wow gran that’s amazing. How would you like some mushy peas huh? That sounds good, right?

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 26 points 6 months ago

What are you trying to kill me? Mushy peas are much too spicy. Now if you dip some bread into the pea wet, then that's a proper meal innit.

[–] die_livster@lemmygrad.ml 22 points 6 months ago (1 children)

why u gotta bring the mushy peas in to this

Where's my peace motherfucker!?! big-honk

You're right, but this applies to like 500 people who run Britain, 300 of which their families always have, and 200 of which pretend their families always did.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 18 points 6 months ago

I think you'd pull more even here in Colombia for a job like that

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 17 points 6 months ago (1 children)

It's less than ten years since the British goverment spent several years trying to ban encryption entirely until eventually enough poeple they trust told them they were fucking idiots and it would destroy the economy overnight.

[–] EmoThugInMyPhase@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago

It would be funny if British colleges complied and stopped teaching about encryption and all the fresh government hires have no idea what any of it means

Californian interns make nearly $72k?

[–] itappearsthat@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago (1 children)
[–] Wolfman86@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

What’s cost of living like though?

In fairness I reckon you could piss away three and a half grand a month away fairly easily in London.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 16 points 6 months ago (2 children)

What’s cost of living like though?

obscene, you're considered low income in the bay area if you make <$104k

[–] AcidLeaves@hexbear.net 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

For a family for 4

Single income earner making 100k is doing perfectly fine

Idk, I live here and I think the numbers are inflated because of tech bros tbh

100k = 65k after taxes

You can find a nice studio in downtown or 1 bedroom outside downtown center for 1.6-2.2k, after utils. Ignore the median rent in the article, it's cause of all the luxury apartments that are needlessly expensive for tech bros

65k = 5.4k /month

After taxes and rent you have 3.4k a month?

In a city that's tiny and has a workable public transit system so you also don't need a car

[–] Wolfman86@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago

Yeah, I’ve heard that. Got mentioned in a thing about the Cecil Hotel, in San Francisco, how basically no one can afford to live in downtown LA or SF. Interesting to hear it off an actual person.

[–] EmoThugInMyPhase@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago

72k is like minimum wage in California lol.

[–] AcidLeaves@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago

60-150k

Median is probably 100k

I think this is also what the average new grad makes in London in the private sector...

Certainly half of what new grads are paid at the big players

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 77 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Help I based my economy around generating wealth for shareholders but I also need things that don't generate wealth to get done.... Unsolvable problem

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 40 points 6 months ago

Which of these will better protect my country:

One plane that works sometimes

Putting a competent person in charge of protecting the entire online monetary system

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 55 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

That's like $70k USD lmao, plus it's in one of the most expensive cities on earth. I would assume that they'd be paying a junior cyber security analyst more than that.

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 52 points 6 months ago (1 children)

You seem to be forgetting how low stress being the head of cyber security for the department that controls all of the money must be

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 34 points 6 months ago (2 children)

The salary factors in that you'll set up an Office Space system that vacuums up all the fractions of cents that get rounded off in every transaction.

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 26 points 6 months ago

Oh boy, commission! Lads, we are so back

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 5 points 6 months ago

oh, right. like in Superman III

[–] BigHaas@hexbear.net 35 points 6 months ago

Sometimes I mention security at work and my coworkers literally laugh. Luckily we're a utility so none of the customers can leave.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 34 points 6 months ago (1 children)

His Majesties...

Royals being unimaginably stupid yet again. That position was absolutely for some little lordling's career starter.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 6 months ago

Even CK players know you absolutely need to live good with your councilors if you want to wear the bling pointy hat for extended period lol

[–] MaoTheLawn@hexbear.net 28 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Yeah. Our salaries are fucked.

Up til recently (pre 12 years of Tories), salaries were a bit better, but mostly the cost of living was in line with the salaries, when you factor in all of the good public healthcare services and railways, even arts/culture.

Then they privatised all the railways and began making the NHS more and more private, while depressing wages of anything that wasn't to do with financial speculation and property.

In London that's all multiplied - finance is very rich, and your average non finance salary should conform to the set London Living Wage (which is higher than the rest of England). The London Living Wage is now however disproportionate to the cost of living. My rents gone up by 300 quid in 3 years, while my house and location have gotten worse and worse.

And now here we are. Pretty much everyone's feeling it. Anything that's not a fat moneymaker is shutting down, so the city has become more and more soulless, giving even less reason to live there other than to chase a bigger salary.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 27 points 6 months ago

You can easily make over $200k a year as Head of Cybersecurity in most places.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 26 points 6 months ago

No wayyyy, they're lying to drum up paranoia for the cold war? shocked-pikachu

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 23 points 6 months ago

Pay peanuts, enjoy watching the circus.

[–] bl_r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 months ago

Entry level pay from a state govt position is higher than that where I live.

For something that stressful, that’s not even enough pay to respond to an email, much less orchestrate policy or risk management or even manage a team.
