General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng implemented an anti-corruption campaign in 2016 called "blazing furnace" in shorthand. Since then, the fire has ripped through both politicians and businesses, up to even the Presidency. Nearly 200,000 party members, 36 Central Committee members, and 50 police/military generals have been disciplined since the initiative began. In 2018, Dinh La Thang, the former party chief of Ho Chi Minh City, became the first sitting Politburo member to be criminally charged, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. In 2023, President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc was implicated in a corruption scandal and resigned. He was replaced by Võ Văn Thưởng, who was then also caught in a corruption scandal a year later in March 2024, making him the shortest serving President in Vietnamese history. The Presidency is current headed by Võ Thị Ánh Xuân while they find a new President; she also took that role in 2023.

The ousted leaders tend to also be part of the more West-friendly, technocratic faction inside Vietnam, either reflecting how these people also tend to be more easily corrupted, or how the Communist Party is slowly moving away from a foreign policy which allies itself with the West (as Vietnam has comprehensive strategic partnerships with several Western countries), or some combination. Of course, this shouldn't be overstated - Vietnam has maintained a close friendship with China for years, and both incumbent leaders are intimately familiar with anti-corruption campaigns and how and why they must be conducted in order to deliver maximum public benefit.

America clearly desires Vietnam to pick their side, because America strongly desires another vassal state in East Asia like the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan to further encircle and isolate China. And so the headlines and commentary of Western state propaganda like Radio Free Asia, the BBC, WaPo, Business Insider, etc reveal their increasing annoyance with Vietnam's government. They often couch this in the standard "objective" economics language); about how removing leaders who foreign investors were reassured by might mean economic pain for Vietnam ahead. As Bhadrakumar noted in 2023, perhaps the BBC revealed their intentions the best:

Reading Vietnamese politics is always difficult — the Communist Party makes its decisions behind closed doors. But hard-line General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who was given an unprecedented third term at last year’s party congress, appears to be consolidating his authority by ousting senior officials seen as more pro-Western and pro-business. Officially this is all happening in the name of fighting corruption,.. but it’s indicative of a power struggle at the top of the party… the likely rise now of more security-focused officials to the top of the party will be bad news.

Even a quick google search right now will show a bunch of articles by clearly nervous Westerners: Why Vietnam’s Escalating Anti-Corruption Campaign Might Backfire because, as we all know, only authoritarian regimes are vulnerable to things like public opinion and discontent, while Western "democracies" are insulated from such petty phenomena. Leaders here can have disapproval ratings of 60-70% and not even the slightest consequence will happen to them - a real sign of democratic freedom and justice over those primitive regimes in the East! Or, take: ‘Blazing Furnace’ Turns Vietnam Into Another Chinese Province; China turning both Russia and Vietnam into their provinces in just two years was a real diplomatic masterclass. Or, back in 2022: Vietnam's 'blazing furnace' crackdown burns $40 bln off stocks. Not the stocks! Anything but the stocks!

If your actions as a leader are pissing off Bloomberg, you are going in the right direction.

Israel's response at the ICJ was an interesting watch. The body language was like a kid who comes home after a fight at school, knowing the school is going to call your parents, jumping everytime the phone rings.

DPRK built a new Cadre Training School with Marx and Lenin on the building and it's gorgeous.

spoilerRespected Comrade Kim Jong Un Inspects Completed Central Cadres Training School of WPK

Pyongyang, May 16 (KCNA) -- In the historic period, when a new heyday of strengthening the whole Party is being ushered in under the five-point Party building line in the new era clarified by the great Comrade Kim Jong Un, the Central Cadres Training School of the Workers' Party of Korea, the highest institute of training Party cadres, has been successfully built as a model of Juche-oriented architecture and the education sector.

Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, gave field guidance at the school on May 15.

Accompanying him were secretaries of the WPK Central Committee.

He was greeted on the spot by officials of the design and construction units involved in the construction project.

Enjoying a panoramic view of the school, wonderfully built to mirror the valiant spirit and nature of the ever-victorious WPK and show its eternal rosy future, he said with great pleasure that the school looked majestic, and that the genuine model educational institution was built by our own efforts.

Going round the educational section, administration building, the general lecture room and multi-purpose lecture hall at the school building, conference hall, library, gymnasium, dormitory, dining hall and other parts of the school, he learned in detail about the fulfillment of the tasks he had given when inspecting it under construction on March 30.

He expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the officials and builders of the design and construction units properly rectified the problems, pointed out by him at that time, and carried out the final stage of construction in a qualitative way and at the highest level and thus made all the components of educational environment and conditions of the school flawless.

Noting that the structural characteristics of buildings were improved more rationally in keeping with the trend of modern education development and the pedagogical principles and the landscaping has been realized on a high level in conformity with the world standard, he said with pride that the Central Cadres Training School of the WPK is a perfect educational facility firmly ensuring the political principles, modernity and practicality and it created the highest standard for other educational institutions across the country.

Expressing expectation and belief that the school, wonderfully built as a political institution of the WPK representing the new era, would always remain faithful to its important and sacred mission of training the genuine backbone, the core Kimilsungists-Kimjongilists, and thus make a tangible contribution to strengthening and developing the WPK and its eternal prosperity, he gave instructions on making full preparations for its operation ahead of its opening ceremony and on organizing its inaugural ceremony in a great politically significant way. -0-

Police dog prevents genocide

California Highway Patrol officers charged a man with multiple felonies after a drug-sniffing dog detected over 511 grams of fentanyl in his car during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 earlier this week. The quantity is enough to potentially kill 250,000 people, the agency said in a Facebook post Thursday.

Maybe this is why Israel has been bombing hospitals - those hospitals might have stocked painkillers that could have killed everyone in the entire region!

Harvard’s Gaza encampment ends after administration agrees to meet

This is the Brown thing all over again isn't it? Disbanding an encampment over a vague promise to discuss the demands instead of actually fulfilling them? The organizers say that they are aware that this isn't a win for divestment but that it is a win for organizing and that they're going to continue the struggle "through other means"? I'm sure they mean what they say but this is just proving to colleges that vaguely promising "discussions" of divestment works to shut down encampments and I feel like other schools are going to start employing this tactic too now that Brown and Harvard have set an example.

The US seems to be trying to more aggressively get China and other Russian Allies to stop helping Russia evade sanctions by threatening them with sanctions. The frustrating thing is that it seems to be working with more Chinese banks refusing Russian payments.

Our strike vote is starting today for UAW 4811, the grad student/student researcher union for the University of California system. For those unaware, this push started back after the raids on the UCLA encampment. It apparently gave the union enough cause to start this proceeding. Which is good! Likely the vote will go through, and then things will get spicy. The vote closes Wednesday afternoon.

On the downside, the highest level of the union leadership still has a bunch of collaborationist fuckers, so they undercut the total power of the strike before it started by declaring it a 'limited' strike, with a maximum deadline of June 30th. Obviously, presetting a deadline for your labor action isn't great. It also undercuts the threat of long term withholding of student grades, which would result in the academic machinery grinding to a halt. That said, it is at the very least past the deadline of the quarter's instruction.

The UC system is weird in that instead of semesters, we use quarters of the year, with a Fall, Winter, and Spring quarter of primary instruction, and then a summer quarter. That means that school goes way farther into May/June than pretty much everywhere else, so the campus won't be empty by any means, and there will be disrupted classes. There will be some form of material impact, and every bit helps I hope.

I was talking with someone, and they think that the University might just play nice and try to wait it out, but I'm really not sure about that. They were pretty chill, in terms of direct force at least, during on more "normal" strike about a year ago, but the harsh crackdowns of students literally just sitting around makes me think it might be different this time. I think it's possible that if our strike materializes, and it has actual material consequences, however mild, they might windmill slam that police brutality button. I feel kind of paranoid typing and talking about this lol. But regardless, I started stocking up on first aid supplies and some protective stuff. I don't know how far away we are from Kent State 2.0.

Thousands march in Dublin calling for end to violence in Gaza

Thousands of people took part in a rally in Dublin city centre on Saturday calling for an end to the violence in Gaza.

The event was organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), and was supported by more than 100 Irish civil society groups.

The group said the event was staged to call “for an end to Israel’s genocidal assault on the people of Gaza, and for the Irish Government to take action to hold Israel accountable”.

Protesters assembled at 1pm at the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square, before marching from there to Leinster House for a rally outside the Dáil. A number of speakers criticised the Government’s “empty words” on Israel following its actions in response to the October 7th attack by Hamas, and called for concrete sanctions against the state.

Those taking part in the rally carried flags, wore Palestinian attire, and chanted slogans including “free, free, Palestine” and “ceasefire now”.

Speakers include IPSC chairwoman Zoë Lawlor and Irish Palestinian Zak Hania, who was trapped in Gaza until recently.

France declared a state of emergency in its colony of New Caledonia after an anti-colonial uprising broke out there, killing and wounding. New Caledonia has long sought independence, hoping to support itself through mining.

France does not want to lose control over them, so it is increasing colonial oppression in New Caledonia, fearing that the ripples from the collapsing colonial empire in Africa will also affect French colonies in other regions of the world.

New Caledonia must be free and completely independent of France. The troops of the French colonialists must be expelled from the country. France's military bases must also be closed. The collaborators of the colonialists must be punished as traitors to the people of New Caledonia. The mineral wealth of New Caledonia must belong to the people.

A Haredi tank unit did some good and opened fire on some Israeli paratroopers

Two IDF tanks killed five IDF soldiers and wounded seven more in a friendly fire incident on Wednesday when they fired on a forward IDF battalion headquarters in Jabalya in northern Gaza. The IDF cleared for publication on Thursday.

The tanks were said to be under extreme pressure from dozens of rocket-propelled grenade attacks in the area.

hamas-red-triangle

All openings to the tanks, including the canopy on the top, were ordered to be kept closed to avoid any hole or vulnerability to the RPG attacks.

This, in turn, limited the tank's visibility.

Does the IDF intend for their tanks to go into battle with all the hatches open for pleasant airflow and visibility??

Tank Unit 202 is a Haredi-integrated unit, and the soldiers said that they saw a potential threat emerge from the battalion headquarters, which was only 10-20 meters away from them.

Just want to underscore the level of heroism underway here: Sen. Tammy Duckworth has been working to evacuate Dr. Adam Hamawy (who saved her life after her helicopter crash) from the hospital the IDF is besieging and bombing. But he and his colleagues have insisted they not leave unless the IDF allows in a new rotation, otherwise the patients will all die and the IDF will overrun the hospital and leave it in ruins as they have done to every other hospital in Gaza.
Five staff were evacuated today but Hamawy refused to go, leaving his body on the line to defend and to treat his patients. He is effectively saying, if they are going to kill everyone in the hospital, they'll have to kill him too.

Enemy media :

Yesterday, #Hezbollah recorded its greatest success since the beginning of the war and destroyed one of the most expensive and advanced defense systems. A #Hezbollah drone worth 20,000 shekels targeted a multi-billion project east of Tiberias yesterday

The occupation army announces that #Hezbollah targeted the Sky Dew balloon, the large surveillance balloon,at an air force base near Tiberias, which is of great importance for monitoring air threats in the north, especially drones.

The #Israeli Ministry of Defense boasted of the spy balloon's superior ability to monitor #Lebanon and #Syria. 24 hours later, #Hezbollah targeted the balloon with a suicide drone.

Article from Israeli state propaganda on the topic.

Israelis from the North are still displaced, and Israel has displayed quite literally zero ability to do anything about it. I'm gonna take an L here: I assumed that the Israeli military still had some vague vestiges of competency that would allow them to meaningfully attack Hezbollah and carry out at least an offensive by now, but no. They're really just fucked, entirely helpless to Hezbollah's many daily strikes.

The Gaza resistance is doing very well too. Lots of attacks reported and lots of daily casualties. The resistance hasn't degraded; it actually seems to have improved since the first days of the war. Plenty of attacks in northern Gaza too, so Hamas is still very much undefeated throughout Gaza despite the propaganda.

Defense Minister Gallant yesterday publically voiced that he opposes the plan for military rule over Gaza, instead wanting a new form of international rule to replace Hamas there. Presumably because he knows that a military occupation of Gaza is untenable and will lead to casualties that Israel cannot withstand for any length of time. An international coalition replacing Hamas is, of course, also not going to work. They'd still have to try and defeat Hamas to exert this plan. They're just trying to put the casualty load on other countries. I wonder if this stuff is designed busywork for the government employees at this point. Like, it's akin to a thinktank asking "When Ukraine conquers Belgorod, will the Ukrainians administer it or will a NATO coalition?" It's geopolitical fanfiction. It's a dude who peaked in high school obsessing over how cool and fit he was back then and assuming he's still just as fit despite being an ailing 40-something year old with double digit physical health problems. This ain't the 1990s anymore, motherfuckers.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid said yesterday: "'...relations with the US are collapsing, the middle class is collapsing, they have lost the north' and 'we will not win with this government'"

And Netanyahu is calling for the Palestinian Authority to be dismantled, which is akin to a dog begging for chocolate. There's a part of my brain that is wondering whether Netanyahu is really a secret comrade who also wants Israel to collapse. It takes genuine skill to be this incompetent, to the point where it's a little suspicious.

Israel is doomed.

South Africa: Israel Must Withdraw From Entire Gaza

South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands, urged the court to order "the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli army from the entire Gaza Strip.”

South Africa urged the United Nations' highest court on Thursday to issue an order to stop the Israeli attack on the city of Rafah as part of its case accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

It said that the attack on Rafah "must be stopped" to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people.

Vusimuzi Madonsela, South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands urged the court to order "the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of the Israeli army from the entire Gaza Strip.”

The two-day hearings at the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, come after South Africa last week asked for additional emergency measures to protect Rafah. More than one million Palestinians have taken refuge in the southern Gaza City.

Israel, which has denounced South Africa's claim that it is violating the 1949 Genocide Convention as baseless, will respond on Friday. In previous filings it stressed it had stepped up efforts to get humanitarian aid into Gaza as the ICJ had ordered.

Last week, South Africa called for additional emergency measures to protect Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, where more than a million Palestinians are sheltering.

It also asked the court to issue an order to Israel to allow UN officials and organizations providing humanitarian aid, as well as journalists and investigators, to enter the Strip without hindrance. She added that Israel has so far been ignoring and violating the orders previously issued by the court.

“From the beginning, Israel’s intention has always been to destroy Palestinian life and wipe them (the Palestinians) off the face of the earth,” South African lawyer Thembeka Ngcukaitobi said. Rafah is the last place.

Edit: Just an FYI there's no information on the matter out of the 5th Fleet that's stationed in the region on the question so we're currently working in an intelligence fog of war in this regard. China doesn’t need to invade to achieve Taiwanese unification

https://thehill.com/opinion/international/4657439-china-doesnt-need-to-invade-to-achieve-taiwanese-unification/

China is more likely to pursue a “short of war coercion campaign,” as we call it, centered on political and economic warfare accompanied by limited kinetic action than an invasion of Taiwan for three main reasons:

First, annexing Taiwan by means short of war significantly limits possible damage to other Chinese grand strategic objectives. The People’s Republic of China’s long-term strategic goals are to continue to build-up what it calls its comprehensive national power and become the world’s leading power. It then aims to decisively reshape international politics and place itself at the center. Although Chinese leader Xi Jinping clearly believes that unifying Taiwan with the mainland is a key component of this grand strategy, he may be loath to risk China’s march to geopolitical dominance by starting a full scale and likely global war.

Second, a short of war strategy centered on political warfare and limited kinetic action could be successful. Taiwan’s most recent elections highlighted deep domestic political divisions, coinciding with a rise in skepticism of America’s support. These sentiments are further reinforced by the fact that Taiwan remains internationally isolated. Taiwan status is sui generis in international affairs: it is a fully functioning nation-state not recognized by the international powers. This creates an opening for China’s manipulation of Taiwan’s understandable fears of abandonment.

Third, strategies short of war are consistent with Chinese strategic thinking and previous behavior. A number of Chinese warfighting concepts reference the utility of fighting wars using means beyond traditional applications of kinetic force. These concepts have been employed regularly in Chinese “gray zone operations” in the South and East China Seas and Taiwan Strait. Given their general success, China will likely intensify their employment in a campaign to annex Taiwan.

Ok so... Stupid language aside.

  1. They'll apply pressure!

  2. They'll do politics!

  3. Nothing, this number is just here to write three things. Uhhh, they've done "no-war strategy" before? Yeah put that down.

TL;DR The Hill is saying China won't invade Taiwan now but they're doing it in the most insufferable way possible framing it in the most sinister way possible when it's just.... Politics? They're just saying that reunification will happen politically but they're using SHORT OF WAR and POLITICAL WARFARE and LIMITED KINETIC FORCE to frame it.

There is a solidarity encampment set up at the University of Witswaterrand and naturally, all of the frothingfash in and out of South Africa came to the realisation that the "American/Apartheid" method cannot be utilised.

There's also a Palestine rally in Tallinn again on the 1st of June.

Also two weeks until the elections in South Africa. Would be amusing if the African Christian Democratic Party website got deep-fried. Again. troll

Anyone seen that clip of Antony Blinkenblinken-pain playing Neil Young's "Rocking In The Free World" on an electric guitar with a random Ukrainian band? The USA is really trying to do the whole "blue jeans and rock and roll revolution" propaganda again, three plus decades later.

Found some YouTube links for those that want to see

Blinken has arrived for a surprise visit to Kiev.
Things are definitely getting dicey. I'm not going to make any sweeping predictions, but the American brass is at least taking this offensive very seriously.

The French Empire has deployed its military to put down insurgents in the Pacific island of New Caledonia, which is near Australia! And France has also banned TikTok in that island to hide human rights violations.

the hilarity of calling Germany a "land of ideas" given their 20th century history aside, this is like when a country is described as having a "strong culture around food" or something as a way of saying nothing while trying to sound learned.

truly, no other country on the planet could be described as having a lot of ideas in it quite like Germany

To rebuke the argument that Georgia's Foreign Agents Registration bill is necessary to prevent State Department NGOs from undermining Georgian sovereignty, the Foreign Ministers of Iceland and the Baltics have arrived in Tbilisi to participate in and encourage Georgia's ~~color-revolution~~ protests against the "Russia law"
