oh my god I went back to FB a few months ago just to see how bad it is.

So the algorithm is real good at picking up on what you like, and it'll do that quickly, but slowly the propaganda starts seeping in.

For example, I like Taylor Swift. Don't hide that here or there. So, she starts popping up. At first fun fan pages.
Then, all of a sudden I get a weird one, that she's actually conservative. Check a few days later, I see another, she's endorsing trump. (Definitiely did not).

And now, without even interacting with the posts, half of them are conservative focused propaganda. It's all 100% BS of course, it's just AI generated images and text, but holy fuck do those morons eat it up. Not just Swift, but everything there is 100% a propaganda machine. They 100% lure you in with things you like, then they turn up the rage after a bit to keep you engaged and stuck there.

Place is a cesspool. Stay away from FB. Remember, family doesn't let family stay on FB.

Twitter is also turning into the same thing.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

It tracks literally everything you do online, regardless of any precautions you take, including not even having an account. But it's not good at determining what you like, or it would have taken the hint the first 20 times I told it that I don't want to see pictures of Sylvester Stalone and his family. What I like is seeing posts from my friends and family, but it'll show me literally anything except for that. BYE!

The Taylor Swift for Trump campaign is insane. I don't get how people are falling for it. On one hand the ai images are very obvious and on the other in no world would Taylor Swift ever support trump.

It's easy, if your worldview means accepting that is easier than accepting reality then your brain of course convinces you that it's real

account age: 2 months

Ah, that's why.

Don't worry, the toxicity doesn't set in until the 4th month

honestly apart from the usual redditesque disagreements sometimes, its fine.

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It was more by way of explaining what the heck I was doing at FB. Been there lately?

[–] balderdash9@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Agreed, Facebook is terrible. But I'd say that Lemmy and Reddit are on a par (as regards users and mods). Perhaps Lemmy's major upside is the decentralized structure, but then you lose out on the niche content that Reddit offers.

[–] kwomp2@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 months ago

I disagree. From my POV it seems like the majority of interactions on lemmy aim at sharing info, checking it and discussion.

There is some clickbaiting and some BS, but i tend to interpret it as a residual of BS internet culture and a product of the general shit aspects of society. Mostly people here seem to try good.

We are all a product of history, so this is fine as long as you somehow try to improve (together), imo.

[–] Jimbo@yiffit.net 2 points 3 months ago

I think you forget how bad Reddit is. If Lemmy was as bad as Reddit was when I left, I most certainly would not be using it. However, troublesome instances have a habit of hating furries and defederating with us so, your experience may differ.

My mother keeps sending stuff over Facebook, my sister keeps inviting me to supposedly important events over Facebook, my work wants me to use twitter, and my brother in law keeps sending tiktock videos.

I remind all of them that I don't use social media, and my Facebook account is only up for the 2 times a year I need it to get ahold of otherwise-unreachable people. If you want something, send me a text or email and be direct.

These images are AI generated. Fuck that.

[–] ADTJ@feddit.uk 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

People using technology on the internet?

What's the world coming to...

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

There's not much technology having worse optics than AI that isn't a weapon in some way, so...

[–] MBM@lemmings.world 2 points 3 months ago

The exaggerated facial expressions always disturb me (also I don't really get the message for this one, other than Lemmy=joy and facebook=sadness)

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 20 points 3 months ago

Lemmy is good, because there's less AI drivel. But that's currently changing. =.=

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 months ago (2 children)

On the one hand I don't like the amount of toxicity and political views. On the other hand it makes Lemmy unviable for AI training

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Do you feel that political toxicity is higher on lemmy than other platforms?

I see some toxicity here but from my experience it's miniscule compared with my experience on reddit and twitter.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It depends on the topic. I've notice people here are a little more "off the rails" sometimes.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Lemmy has a bit less censorship toward more deranged tendencies. I can state openly that I want to sacrifice a person on a Joshua because the tree is thirsty and I dont get banned. Fun shit, though mods do sometimes remove my violent comments which are bit more grounded.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I've noticed some mods (mainly the ones that have been here since pre popularization) will remove any comment that isn't in line with there tankie agenda. Most communities don't have that problem and I have only scene it on the older Lemmy.ml ones.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 months ago

I did block the entirety of the .ml instances which probably helps. Figured id do it myself preemptively.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

True, once I filtered out all posts that mention political topics and blocked people that posted political posts, my feed became a ghost feed. Some days I might get multiple new posts but other times there might be nothing new for weeks.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 months ago

And that's a bad thing? It seems healthy not to have content continually served to you.

[–] recklessengagement@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I like it here. People are quite nice for the most part

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

FUB fact a human rectum can stretch up to nine inches, a racoon can fit through a hole 6 inches or wider.

[–] Flocklesscrow@lemm.ee 1 points 3 months ago

But what to do with the other half of a raccoon?

Some of you are alright, don't log in to Facebook tomorrow

Our Lemmy experiences are not similar.

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just read all the comments but only have time to reply to you.

I am convinced that few Lenny user experiences are the same — and that’s a good thing. I stand by the meme for the simple reason when I post to Lenny I’m not putting money into the pocket of anyone.

I guess that’s the biggest draw for me.

And that I feel users here, whether they agree with one another or whether they might be toxic, they are at least thoughtful and attempt to support their claims with reason and evidence.

And I never feel used at Lemmy the way I have on FB ETC.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

That's true. There is more genuine discussion on Lemmy than on any other platform. Facebook is completely devoid of anything meaningful these days, and reddit isn't too far behind for everything except niche communities. Unfortunately Lemmy doesn't have enough people or content for me to just stick to my niche communities like I do on Reddit, so I see a whole lot more doomerism, and political outrage here, despite my extensive block list.

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Thinking about your name, Anticorp. Just watched The Internet’s Own Boy. It’s a doc on the life and death of Aaron Swartz. If you haven’t seen it you will appreciate it.

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Thanks for the recommendation.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

If this is meant to say that Lemmy is a cult-like social media, I kinda have to agree. Like Reddit and Twitter are, but only different in that people on Lemmy are more likely to be obsessed with Linux and be trans compared to the other platforms.

Lemmy still has the same "group think" or "hive mind" problem, its just different. More politically left compared to Reddit, which is still politically left but its not so far from center like Lemmy is. Like, Lemmy users have been observed telling people who are politically left that they "arent politically left enough." Who says that, why is that even a thing to argue over?

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Would you like to see more right wing political takes? For me I look at the current American right wing snd I don't think any views expressed would be allowed on this platform. Not because this platform has strict rules but because their views are so unhinged and bigoted.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

No, I would like to ideally see no political takes. Neutral comments that don't inject politics into topics they don't belong in. Left or right I don't care, I don't want to see either of them.

But I do agree that basically no right wing views are allowed on Lemmy. Not even some left wing views are allowed because they're "not left enough." While I was blocking communities related to politics, one was called something like "conservative" (I dont remember the instance) and it was obviously the victim of targeted vote brigading. Every single post and comment that was not making fun of the OP or calling politically right people "hateful bigots" or Nazis or whatever other buzzword names politically left people use now for politically right people, every single one was sitting at like -200 or more downvotes which was more than the number of people active in the community.

In my opinion, that's a problem, because vote brigading is a Reddit thing and Lemmy was supposed to be better than Reddit. But as it turns out, its the same. Its the same as Reddit, if not worse because of the way its users treat people that don't have exactly the same thinking as they do. I'm sick of the tribalism that Lemmy was described as not having.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 months ago

Fair enough, I get wanting things to be kept neutral. Ive just come to accept that certain people will always shoehorn politics into every hobby or conversation.

Ill die on the hill that vote brigading is not as bad on lemmy as it was on reddit. If you got heavily downvoted on reddit it restricted your ability to comment and participate with all kinds of unrelated communties on the site. If you get downvoted on lemmy nothing happens except your ego may take a hit.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Social media sucks.
But I can't live without it.
