Fred Hampton, deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, was born on August 30, 1948 and raised in the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois. In high school he excelled in academics and athletics. After Hampton graduated from high school, he enrolled in a pre-law program at Triton Junior College in River Grove, Illinois. Hampton also became involved in the civil rights movement, joining his local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). His dynamic leadership and organizational skills in the branch enabled him to rise to the position of Youth Council President. Hampton mobilized a racially integrated group of five hundred young people who successfully lobbied city officials to create better academic services and recreational facilities for African American children.

In 1968, Hampton joined the Black Panther Party (BPP), headquartered in Oakland, California. Using his NAACP experience, he soon headed the Chicago chapter. During his brief BPP tenure, Hampton formed a “Rainbow Coalition” which included Students for a Democratic Society, the Blackstone Rangers, a street gang and the National Young Lords, a Puerto Rican organization. Hampton was also successful in negotiating a gang truce on local television.

In an effort to neutralize the Chicago BPP, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Chicago Police Department placed the chapter under heavy surveillance and conducted several harassment campaigns. In 1969, several BPP members and police officers were either injured or killed in shootouts, and over one hundred local members of the BPP were arrested.

During an early morning police raid of the BPP headquarters at 2337 W. Monroe Street on December 4, 1969, twelve officers opened fire, killing the 21-year-old Hampton and Peoria, Illinois Panther leader Mark Clark. Police also seriously wounded four other Panther members. Many in the Chicago African American community were outraged over the raid and what they saw as the unnecessary deaths of Hampton and Clark. Over 5,000 people attended Hampton’s funeral where Reverends Ralph Abernathy and Jesse Jackson of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference eulogized the slain activist. Years later, law enforcement officials admitted wrongdoing in the killing of Hampton and Clark. In 1990, and later in 2004, the Chicago City Council passed resolutions commemorating December 4 as Fred Hampton Day.

in order for utilitarianism to be functional as a philosophy/framework you have to subscribe to or reinvent a manner of praxeology, in this essay I will

If anyone has a power supply that's 12-volt, 3-amp and center positive, please reply, I am in need.

Actually if you can recommend a good multivoltage power supply, please do. Ideally for laptop use but also broadly.

I got a job offer a couple days ago, the problem is it’s in Baltimore. My partner and I came to Baltimore today and got a hotel for the night so we could check it out since neither of us had been before

I’m not entirely sure how she feels, or my parents who we’re currently living with, but I think I want to turn down the job. There are parts of this city I don’t dislike but on a whole I think I’m really just not a fan and I don’t think I want to live here.

My dad fucking hates Baltimore so I don’t think he’ll be too disappointed in me if I turn it down

Also I’d likely have to drive to work or take the not great bus, vs trying to find something in DC where I’ll be able to take the metro. Which may not be the biggest deal but it does make me sad.

Guy who thinks high school math shouldn't waste time on algebra and trigonometry but wants to replace it with Lebesgue theory, functional analysis, and calculus of variations.

(normally I'd hide this under a "VTuber posting" spoiler but this is more about COVID than VTubers. Even if the names mean nothing the sentiment should still be clear)

Man, watching Hololive EN's streams after the Breaking Dimensions concerts this past weekend is so grim. So many chatters saying they caught COVID--it was basically a double superspreader event because it happened concurrently with Anime NYC which had an attendance of 100,000 people, and the first Hololive World Tour date was at Anime NYC the day before Day 1 of Breaking Dimensions. When I watched the VOD, <5% of people were wearing masks, so that's not a surprising outcome (but shoutout to the few people wearing high quality respirators including a few elastomerics). This pattern repeats every time there's some big event--people go, post a bunch of pictures of them unmasked at the event, and then come back with COVID.

Amongst the actual VTubers, Mumei's also going through a bad bout of COVID, apparently contracted before the concert. Unrelated to Hololive, but Henya from VShojo is also dealing with serious long COVID to the point that she's taking a hiatus from streaming† (something which her fellow member Haruka had to do earlier this year). I don't follow Henya closely, but reading that announcement makes me worry that she may have first tried to push through her illness--something which we know can cause severe and potentially permanent reductions in function. I hope that's not the case and she's able to make a full recovery, but I also know just how bad things can get even though people don't want to consider that possibility.

Through all of this, no one seems to acknowledge that this is an insane state of affairs, just posting generic "get well soon!" messages. All of it makes me feel fucking crazy.

Obviously none of this is unique to VTubing/streaming--it's just a microcosm of the general state of affairs--but maybe it's especially jokerfying because so many of the people involved are borderline shut-ins and or have existing chronic illnesses. You'd think if anyone would be open to the idea of being cautious about going to large gatherings of people, it'd be VTubers and VTuber fans! And yet, it seems like most of the people I watch have ended up with multiple COVID infections even though they are lucky enough to have jobs where they could literally never leave their homes if they wanted to.

Don't really have an illuminating conclusion or anything, just needed to screm-a into the void

Due to the lingering effects of COVID-19 and pneumonia my health has not been recovering as expected and I am finding it increasingly difficult to even get out of bed each day. Severe coughing and dizziness have also been affecting my daily life so after consulting with my doctor and management I have decided to take a break until I get better dayo

I wanted to continue streaming as much as possible but given my current physical I have realized that it is difficult to fully dedicate myself to streaming.

l will focus on recovering so that I can enjoy streaming with you all again. Thank you so much for your continued support I hope to see you soon dayo!

10,000% agreement i spent an entire hour ranting to my therapist about this after catching covid a week or so ago. It's just incredible that no one cares, no one acknowledges what a threat this is to themselves and people around them.

The emphasis on "CHOOSE JOY" in the Copmala campaign really makes the outro song to Death is Just Around the Corner hit harder

I'm trying to find out what the upcoming Atlus JRPG is like, but none of the people writing about it seem to speak my language. All they are saying is "It's just like Persona because it has [typical JRPG elements], except without [the elements unique to Persona games]." AI-generated ass writing, please say a single thing that actually means something.

Just finished reading Piranesi, it was a joy to read. Love the main character, the writing style, everything about it compelled me to keep reading until it was finished. Haven't felt that same drive since I was a kid. cat-vibing
