A Michigan man was charged Friday with allegedly assaulting a mail carrier over a "Kamala Harris for President" mailer that the mail carrier delivered to his mailbox.

Russell Frank Valleau, 61, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, was charged by Oakland County, Michigan Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald with assaulting a mail carrier.

"The defendant was allegedly upset that he had received mail regarding presidential candidate Kamala Harris and allegedly said that he did not want that 'black b****' in his mailbox," according to press release from the Oakland County, Michigan prosecutor's office said. "He then called the mail carrier a 'black b****' and threatened the carrier. The mail carrier used pepper spray to stop the defendant."

A literal case of "don't shoot the messenger".

The mail carrier used pepper spray to stop the defendant.

Please let there be video. I need it.

[–] 21Cabbage@lemmynsfw.com 16 points 1 month ago

I'm imagining an overweight man in his 50s just getting fucking obliterated while trying to assault somebody half his age who actually gets off their ass when somebody isn't telling them to.

Important detail missing from this article:

He's accused of yelling derogatory, racist and sexual remarks about Harris and the carrier, calling the postal carrier a "Black b****" and lunging at her with a knife.

emphasis mine

I'm shocked, the title of the story left so much out, I was really wondering who the unhinged, deranged psychopath was in a story about someone assaulting a mail carrier for delivering the mail.

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 59 points 1 month ago

Another deranged goon from the MAGA party of hate, lies and violence. Take care out there.

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 59 points 1 month ago

Conservatives: Liberals always think about race and only voting for her because she's a black woman. They should vote for the person qualified.

Also conservatives: I do not want that black bitch in my mailbox.

[–] ThePantser@lemmy.world 46 points 1 month ago

Wait we can do that? I'm in MI and get 5-6 Trump flyers a week. I don't want that orange bitch in my mailbox.

[–] qprimed@lemmy.ml 40 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I try not to judge with incomplete facts...

but damn, do I hope the fucker is now blind - you know, to ease the terrible pain of having to look at people with (assumption incoming) a different skin color from his. you are the problem. fuck you.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 38 points 1 month ago

Depending upon local state laws, he may have also lost his right to vote, now that he’s a criminal. I’m sure he is glad to be relieved of that burden.

[–] refurbishedrefurbisher@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

75% chance he's secretly attracted to black women, but thinks it's wrong for some reason, so he lashes out at them.

We've seen this scenario play out a few too many times.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 35 points 1 month ago

Way to go mail carrier with the pepper spray on the average Trump voter!

[–] pemptago@lemmy.ml 31 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Tolerates decades of spam in his mailbox. Has melt down when one contains a black female politician.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

"Why do they have to make my mail POLITICAL??"

[–] 800XL@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

That poor snowflake. I get Harris, Trump, and every single damn person that's running for office in my mail. Except for some reason I get duplicates of the Trump ones.

The thing is, it's worked. Simply by doubling up the lies changed my mind. If they are that so sure about the things they say and say it with conviction without nary a difference it must be true.

Nah, just more recycling.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 30 points 1 month ago (2 children)

He was charged with one count of ethnic intimidation, a felony, and one count of assault and battery, which is a misdemeanor…

Huh? Shouldn’t the crime of actually harming someone be at least as serious as threatening to?

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In this case there was a knife involved and clearly the mail carrier wasn't threatening him (maybe his poor fee-fees) so that should be a felony. If he'd attack someone for doing their job he'd probably attack someone for stepping on his lawn or using his driveway to turn around.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 5 points 1 month ago

Oh noes! Not his fee-fees!

[–] nickhammes@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

There's a lot more gradation in laws against actually hurting people. I'm guessing misdemeanor assault here means that an attempt was made, but maybe he punched the carrier once and the pepper spray stopped him. An aggressive threat and a fairly ineffective attack? That kinda makes sense to me

[–] medgremlin@midwest.social 15 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"Assault" is shouting and threatening, "battery" is actually making contact. It sounds like she got the pepper spray out in time to prevent him from touching her, which is a very good thing.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 3 points 1 month ago

Hmm. I can see that.

[–] _number8_@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

this country is so cool i love living here

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I tell ya what, it's not boring. That's for sure.

[–] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 26 points 1 month ago

Nice pepper spray to his eyes.

I hope no one helped him until the police arrived.

[–] calabast@lemm.ee 21 points 1 month ago

❄️ alert

[–] z3rOR0ne@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Assaulting a federal employee is a felony... that fucking moron. He should have sprayed enough capsaicin into his eyes that he would never see any presidential candidate or anything else again.

[–] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

She, but yeah. It sounds like after she sprayed him down he was fully incapacitated by the time the cops got to him.

At least he got a nice solid dose.

[–] bender223 20 points 1 month ago

This is somehow the Democrats fault. They need to tone down their violent rhetoric 😭

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When there a vidoes of everything these days why couldn't there be one of this jackass getting pepper sprayed.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Hear, hear😓

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Doesn't this count as a hate crime if the guy was saying heinous shit right before the assault?

[–] NiHaDuncan@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

Indeed. And he was charged for that.

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago

FUCK YOUR FEELINGS but if you UPSET Me I'm going to STAB you!

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

People are not well.

[–] Skoobie@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago

Probably wasn't labeled as pepper spray. We aren't allowed any extra weapons on the job. But we are given Dog Spray. She sprayed him with Dog Spray. Which to be fair, is essentially pepper spray. But the label reads Dog Spray.

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

charged with allegedly assaulting

Is this correct use of "allegedly"? The man allegedly assaulted someone, so he was charged with assault. Or they can just say "charged for allegedly assaulting".

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's a means for the news source to cover its ass. They can't outright say it as a fact otherwise they run the risk of getting sued if the courts find the man innocent.

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

They can't say that the man assaulted someone as a fact. But that the man was charged with assault is a fact. Alleged attack is not a charge, so "charged with allegedly attacking" is nonsensical. To cover their ass they can say "charged for allegedly attacking", which shows that he was charged, why he was charged, and also adds the required "allegedly".

[–] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Funny how today is the first day we've gotten any political fliers in my office, and the same day I see this. Didn't take very long at all for a Magat to assault one of us over the election, and I guarantee it won't be the last.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Not putting out a Harris/Walz yard sign was a good move I feel.

[–] mkhopper@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I live in a very diverse, quiet, and friendly neighborhood, but I'm still nervous about putting out a Harris/Walz sign.

I don't understand why anyone puts up a sign for the major presidential candidates. What is the point? People already know who they are. All you're doing is advertising your position.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

NGL it is reassuring and even a bit motivating to see the signs when you're in a red or purple state.
