The U.S. Department of Justice said on Friday it sued the state of Virginia for violating the federal prohibition on systematic efforts to remove voters within 90 days of an election.

On Aug. 7, Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order requiring the commissioner of Department of Elections to certify that the department was conducting "daily updates to the voter list" to remove, among other groups, people who are unable to verify that they are citizens to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

U.S. citizens who were identified and notified, and did not affirm their citizenship within 14 days would be removed from the list of registered voters, the Justice Department said. It said this practice has led to citizens having their voter registrations canceled ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

"By cancelling voter registrations within 90 days of Election Day, Virginia places qualified voters in jeopardy of being removed from the rolls and creates the risk of confusion for the electorate," said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke.

Republicans really hate democracy.

"If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy."

They make shitty laws and then use those laws and Democrats do nothing to change them or stop them.

It's called the Ratchet effect. Republicans move everything to the right, dems keep if from moving back left.

[–] cultsuperstar@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Remember, Trump said if minorities vote, Republicans would never win another election. So they're doing everything they can to keep people from voting. Republican controlled states already shorten voting hours, reduce the number of voting places, they constantly purge voters right before elections, they don't like mail in ballots. The fact that election day isn't a national holiday already says a lot about how much this country cares about democracy.

Also, I think just about every reported case of voter fraud that I'm aware of has been condu by Republican supporters.

I don't know why they need to go this far to be honest. If what I've read about polling inaccuracy is to be believed from a pew research article then Kamala has already lost every single swing state because Republicans are refusing to take part in polling in larger and larger numbers so we keep seeing Democrats showing as performing higher than they are in reality...

If she's tied in some, "ahead" by only .5 in others, and behind by 1.5 in others then in reality she's more than likely behind by 3+ in each... :(

Honestly, if they were that far ahead they wouldn't be going nuts with the voter removal bullshit.

The orange asshole is scared he may not win, so is hedging his bets by having Black, Brown, unhoused and poor people removed (this list is who often doesn't have so-called 'proper ID').

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I might even be considered one of those then since I still need to get a "Real ID." I just renewed my old style license because it's about to expire and I didn't realize I need to get my birth certificate for the new id...

Part of me wishes they would deport me, just don't know where that would be lol I guess Italy but that was like 100 years ago.

It could be worse. My ancestors are from a different part of Europe, much closer to the front lines

Anecdotal evidence. I went to early vote on Thursday, afternoon timeframe. It was busy for early voting. I was surprised. There was only like a 5-10 min wait, but still for early voting on a Thursday? A lot of the people verify information were announcing 1st time voters for people to clap. I probably heard it 4 times during that 10 mins. 1 of the first time voters was with me, so that might skew the data but still.

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Good job voting for the first time! I don't know if you're 18 or 81 but thank you for participating.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 months ago

I could have worded that better. It wasn't my first time. I took some family and it was their first time.

[–] orcrist@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago

That might be true, but then again it might be totally false. If we could actually believe data like yours, we wouldn't need to have an election in the first place. The same could be said of the more reputable polls, as well. But that's contradictory, so none of it tells us anything. Wild times.

My gut tells me that Trump isn't going to get anyone more excited to vote than 4 years ago, but Kamala might. My gut is no more reliable than your gut, but since we really don't know, I'll just go with that for now.

Okay, do Georgia next.

Is the DMV now in charge of customs and immigration?

Or is it just because the DMV doesn't have locations in areas where the targets of these purges just so happen to be registered?
