On the 24th of october in 1975, approximately 90% of Icelandic women struck for equality, not attending jobs or doing any domestic work. Iceland passed an equal pay law the following year, but the strike has been repeated on its anniversary several times since, such as in the years 2005, 2010, and 2016.

The strike was planned by "The Women's Congress", which had met on June 20th and 21st earlier that year. Among the reasons given for going on strike were pay inequality, lack of women in union leadership, and a general lack of recognition for the value and skill of domestic labor.

During the work stoppage, also known as "Women's Day Off", 25,000 people gathered in Reykjavik, Iceland's capital city, for a rally. There, women listened to speakers, sang, and talked to each other about what could be done to achieve gender equality in Iceland.

Women from many different backgrounds spoke, including a housewife, two members of parliament, and a worker. The last speech of the day was by Aðalheiður Bjarnfreðsdóttir, who "represented Sókn, the trade union for the lowest paid women in Iceland", according to The Guardian.

In 1976, the Icelandic government passed an equal pay law, and the country elected its first female President, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, five years later in 1980.

The 1975 Women's Strike also helped inspire the 2016 "Black Monday" anti-abortion ban protests in Poland, as well as the "International Women's Strike", single day work stoppages on March 8th, 2017 and 2018.

If you tolerate this your children will be next by the manic street preachers.

How is there this huge disconnect between the soc dems who see Biden and Kamala as immensely successful leaders making slow but meaningful if not measurable progress even with the deck stacked against them, to socialists who see they're tirelessly strangling out any hope for the future? maybe it's less a difference in perception, but the libs actually identify as beneficiaries of class structure and hegemony, therefore the brutality the democrats enable is welcomed by them? I wouldn't even say it's a subconcious appreciation for it, I would say it's it's charitableness on our part that we don't perceive their statements of support as the violent declarations they are. It can't be unusual therefore that "libs get scratched" (i.e. , they read something that annoys them) and the resulting off the cuff tirade is that it needs to be solved by a militia mowing down protestors.

I think you're right. Democrats, especially Harris, only talk about helping the 'middle class'. She has NEVER spoken about a working class, or people in poverty (beyond helping them become 'middle class'), because you need to be at least 'middle class' to benefit from the various oppressive hierarchies

libertarians are a communist plot because none of them i've ever met seem to have actually experienced capitalism firsthand before

"in a capitalist market, companies compete to make the best product!" <- something only claimable by someone who has never lived under capitalism before

my neighbor used he/him pronouns for his (late) large male dog. he uses it/its pronouns for the smaller female. I recently noticed him use it/its with my dog who is male, same size as the female, and is fairly masculine by both standards.

people be getting weird with pet genders. like it really doesn't matter but I think most people just make their pet cis (for lack of a better term) and stick with it, that's what I've always done but I like human names for pets. maybe with my next one I'll swap things around. he/him for a female and she/her for male.

Facebook leftist page is encouraging people to commit perjury if they get jury duty so they can be on a jury and do a nullification. This is a fantastic way to be held in contempt of court in the most consequential way possible, that's gonna cause a mistrial, they'll get a new jury and you'll be in a stupid amount of trouble, you personally pissed off and lied to the judge who now controls your fate. If by some weird chance you end out on a jury, nullify, but don't lie in the selection process to do so. It won't do anything but delay and you'll go down fucking hard for it.

Saw someone online complain about a food spot and they said that the fries were "dry af," which is such a weird complaint to me. Wouldn't you want your fries to be crispy and not soggy? Also the dryness of the fries is entirely up to you, you can just dip them in ketchup or something.

I love resume advice because it's like "make it eye catching the average resume gets reviewed in 8 seconds" and "make sure you don't have grammatical errors". Who is catching grammar errors in a 8 second review?

A new Power is rising. Against it the old allies and policies will not avail us at all. There is no hope left in Elves or dying Númenor. This then is one choice before you. before us. We may join with that Power. It would be wise, Gandalf. There is hope that way. Its victory is at hand; and there will be rich reward for those that aided it. As the Power grows, its proved friends will also grow; and the Wise, such as you and I, may with patience come at last to direct its courses, to control it. We can bide our time, we can keep our thoughts in our hearts, deploring maybe evils done by the way, but approving the high and ultimate purpose: Knowledge, Rule, Order; all the things that we have so far striven in vain to accomplish, hindered rather than helped by our weak or idle friends. There need not be, there would not be, any real change in our designs, only in our means.

Saruman was a Democrat?

I guess a dude trying to rob the liquor store called one of the clerks a fascist, he also works at the grocery store and was telling me after work. We had a good laugh and all and then I said "well, you are a government contracted employee there, so professionally speaking, he's kinda right.". Silence. "Have a great night!"

Going on the myfico forums is so funny. Instead of quotes or jokes in their forum signatures they have little images of all their credit cards and little widgets for their total credit limit and credit scores by bureau. one guy even has the logo for a pretty exclusive credit union and the alt text says how long they've been a member

Dungeons and Dragons vent postEvery now and then I am reminded that D&D exists and become irrationally angry.

Ok actually it's more like rationally angry. My partner and I are absolutely 100% the target demographic in every way and should LOVE this game, but every time we've tried to play has just been SO GARBAGE. Enough so that every reminder of the game (+my own anxiety) sends me down the "if everyone you meet is an asshole, you're the asshole" spiral.

But I'm pretty sure I'm NOT the asshole, just someone who has had absolute garbage luck with D&D groups.

We haven't played since COVID started (our active campaigns went online and wrapped quickly, and we were both like "whew, glad I can be done with that forever"). But it SUCKS because WE SHOULD LOVE IT. So many people get so much out of it, but it always felt like complete torture. We played with friends, we played with strangers, and every time there was just this one asshole player at the table completely ruining it for everyone else.

EVERY campaign I've joined has had a different THAT GUY that was just UNBEARABLE to play with. Stealing from other PCs, consistently rolling completely improbably high, unassailable via PVP because of some bullshit or min-max build when other characters do call out their character on their bullshit, killing friendly NPCs, stealing from friendly NPCs, intentionally holding the idiot ball for who knows what fucking reason, rolling "the characters's twin brother" when somehow they actually do face the consequences of their actions.

Like, I read posts about it, and there's always a "you'll eventually meet THAT GUY if you play long enough", but how the fuck can I actually manage NOT encountering THAT GUY for once?

It just pisses me off so fucking badly. I wanted to like the game. I wanted to roll dice and move miniatures and make food for friends and somehow it's always COMPLETE TORTURE from one fucking prick.

agony-4horsemen

It sucks. I hate D&D. I don't want to. But I hate it SO FUCKING MUCH because it put me in contact with pricks for WAY TOO LONG.
