back in my map era, we're ukrainemaxxing right now

Declarations of the imminent doom of Ukraine are a news megathread specialty, and this is not what I am doing here - mostly because I'm convinced that whenever we do so, the war extends another three months to spite us. Ukraine has been in an essentially apocalyptic crisis for over a year now after the failure of the 2023 counteroffensive, unable to make any substantial progress and resigned to merely being a persistent nuisance (and arms market!) as NATO fights to the last Ukrainian. In this context, predicting a terminal point is difficult, as things seem to always be going so badly that it's hard to understand how and why they fight on. In every way, Ukraine is a truly shattered country, barely held together by the sheer combined force of Western hegemony. And that hegemony is weakening.

I therefore won't be giving any predictions of a timeframe for a Ukrainian defeat, but the coming presidency of Trump is a big question mark for the conflict. Trump has talked about how he wishes for the war to end and for a deal to be made with Putin, but Trump also tends to change his mind on an issue at least three or four times before actually making a decision, simply adopting the position of who talked to him last. And, of course, his ability to end the war might be curtailed by a military-industrial complex (and various intelligence agencies) that want to keep the money flowing.

The alignment of the US election with the accelerating rate of Russian gains is pretty interesting, with talk of both escalation and de-escalation coinciding - the former from Biden, and the latter from Trump. Russia very recently performed perhaps the single largest aerial attack of Ukraine of the entire war, striking targets across the whole country with missiles and drones from various platforms. In response, the US is talking about allowing Ukraine to hit long-range targets in Russia (but the strategic value of this, at this point, seems pretty minimal).

Additionally, Russia has made genuine progress in terms of land acquisition. We aren't talking about endless and meaningless battles over empty fields anymore. Some of the big Ukrainian strongholds that we've been spending the last couple years speculating over - Chasiv Yar, Kupiansk, Orikhiv - are now being approached and entered by Russian forces. The map is actually changing now, though it's hard to tell as Ukraine is so goddamn big.

Attrition has finally paid off for Russia. An entire generation of Ukrainians has been fed into the meat grinder. Recovery will take, at minimum, decades - more realistically, the country might be permanently ruined, until that global communist revolution comes around at least. And they could have just made a fucking deal a month into the war.

I was checking Wikipedia's page on Self-Coups. And there was this there:

Notable events described as attempted self-coups:

Israel: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Ongoing events, since he assumed office on December 29, 2022)

Is this related to the reforms of the Israeli Supreme Court?

I've just seen someone claim 'Tim Waltz was also an excellent VP pick who appealed to progressives.' I'm not yank so could someone break down if there is any truth to that? tbh not knowing about about him I assumed he was a stereotypical 'safe' center-right white guy, is he closer to a Liz Warren or even a Sanders,?

More alleged ATACMS strikes on Kursk, Russia by the United States and Ukraine within the last two hours. It seems that the use of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapons system by Russia, in the MIRV and submunition capable Oreshnik IRBM, has not deterred the US and Ukraine from launching strikes and attacks against Russia within Russia's internationally recognised borders. Expect a Russian response if these do indeed turn out to be ATACMS missiles.

Video:

Reddit source

TankieTube mirror

You can see the alleged ATACMS missile in it's terminal phase of flight, as well as hearing an apparent sonic boom, just before the explosion at the beginning of the video, I'll screenshot it and post it below:

Oh my they are really going to get us all killed.

I know this isn't news, but living in a country bordering Russia whose ruling class has decided to side with the fucking Empire of Imperialism and throw us to the wolves is wild. I have a child who is in draft age and I am genuinely starting to lose my shit.

I keep trying to think of ways to gtfo from here if things go truly wrong and we are kind of fucked from all sides thanks to the Baltic sea. But my commie kid will not be sent to die for these ghouls, they can draft him over my dead body.

In Switzerland the Federal Department of Justice says that they've ratified the Rome Statue, which forms the legal basis of the ICC. Therefore they would have to arrest Benjamin Natanyahu and other people that have been charged as a matter of principle.

Does anyone have sources on how much US/UK involvement is required to launch these missiles? It is guaranteed that they provide intel and potential targets. From there, does Ukraine program the missiles? According to Wikipedia, it seems the Storm Shadow missiles are guided by GPS, which—despite its ubiquity—is US military tech. It also appears the missiles need to be loaded with satellite images for target matching. Apparently, they can relay images of a site just before impact and presumably that won't be going directly to Ukrainian military staff but more likely somewhere in the US/UK?

I was almost impressed for a second by some of the tech, but then I remembered that Russia has missiles flying at up to 3 km/s, and now I’m not as much.

Federal Police have now identified 35 Military personnel including 10 Generals, 16 Colonels and an Admiral as involved in coup plan to assassinate President Lula, Vice President Alckmin and Supreme Court Minister Moraes. Arrests imminent. - Brazilwire

Jair Bolsonaro's former Aide de Camp, Lt. Col. Mauro Cid, has been summoned to testify to the federal police about the December, 2022 assassination attempt planned by top military allies of Bolsonaro, for Lula, VP Geraldo Alckmin & Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes

After arresting 4 special forces officers, including a former instructor at the School of the Americas, and a Federal Police agent for the assassination attempt yesterday, police now say they have enough evidence to arrest 35 Military personnel. According to the Fed. Police, many of the assassination planning meetings took place in the mansion of Bolsonaro's former Minister of Defense and 2022 VP running mate, General Walter Braga Neto

According to investigators, and armed army special forces soldier was stationed 3 blocks from Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes' home on the planned night of the assassination, which was only called off due to a change of schedule in the Supreme Court. Keep this in mind when you think about Greenwald spending the last 2 years pushing the Bolsonaro family's "authoritarian" narrative against Justice Moraes, who is in charge of the Supreme Court's investigation into the architects of the failed coup attempt.

Back to Mauro Cid (R), he's been called in for interrogation today because during a plea bargain deal, he testified that close allies of Bolsonaro had planned to kidnap Lula, Alckmin and Moraes. Leaving out the assassination part violates the terms of his plea bargain. Brazil's Federal Police announce that Jair Bolsonaro knew about the assassination plot against President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

list of those indicted by the federal police for violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, criminal organization and coup d'état:

  • Ailton Gonçalves Moraes Barros (retired army captain accused of brokering illegal data entry on Covid-19 vaccination cards)

  • Alexandre Castilho Bitencourt da Silva (army colonel and one of the authors of the coup document “Letter to the Army Commander from Senior Active Officers and the Brazilian Army)

  • Alexandre Ramagem (federal deputy, former director-general of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin, Brazil's CIA) and Federal Police (Brazil's FBI) delegate, attempted to be Rio de Janeiro's Mayor, but lost to popular pro-Lula Liberal Eduardo Paes, who won the elections with 60% of the votes)

  • Almir Garnier Santos (reserve admiral and former commander of the Navy, very pro-coup, most radical)

  • Amauri Feres Saad (a lawyer cited by the CPI (Parliamentary Committee of Investigation) on Coup Acts as the “intellectual mentor” of the draft of the coup found with Anderson Torres)

  • Anderson Torres (former Minister of Justice of Bolsonaro's goverment and later of the Federal District of Brasilia, Capital of Brazil, was hiding in the US)

  • Anderson Lima de Moura (an army colonel and one of the authors of the coup document “Letter to the Commander of the Army from Senior Officers of the Active and Brazilian Army”)

  • Angelo Martins Denicoli (a major in the army reserve who held a management position in the Ministry of Health under Eduardo Pazuello's administration, the same administration that led to many people dying of Covid)

  • Augusto Heleno Ribeiro Pereira (former Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet (Brazil's secret service) and Army Reserve General, known for his war crimes in Haiti)

  • Bernardo Romão Correa Netto (a colonel accused of being part of a group responsible for inciting the military to adhere to a strategy of military intervention to prevent Lula's inauguration.)

  • Carlos Cesar Moretzsohn Rocha (an engineer hired by the PL (Liberal Party, Bolsonaro's Party) to question the vulnerability of electronic ballot boxes during the 2022 elections. An engineer who claims to be the 'inventor' of the electronic voting machine.)

  • Carlos Giovani Delevati Pasini (an army colonel suspected of having participated in the drafting of the “Letter to the Army Commander from Senior Officers of the Active and Brazilian Army”.)

  • Cleverson Ney Magalhães (Army reserve colonel and former officer of the Land Operations Command)

  • Estevam Cals Theophilo Gaspar de Oliveira (reserve general and former head of the Army's Land Operations Command)

  • Fabrício Moreira de Bastos (army colonel and allegedly involved in a coup letter)

  • Filipe Garcia Martins (former advisor to the Presidency of the Republic who took part in the meeting that dealt with the coup draft, known white supremacist)

  • Fernando Cerimedo (Argentine businessman who made a live broadcast questioning the security of the electronic ballot boxes during the 2022 elections)

I think this dude is a Milei supporter now?

  • Giancarlo Gomes Rodrigues (an army lieutenant and one of those responsible for the clandestine monitoring of political opponents)

  • Guilherme Marques de Almeida (lieutenant colonel and former commander of the 1st Psychological Operations Battalion in Goiânia who fainted when the knocked on his door)

Ironic, lol

  • Hélio Ferreira Lima (a lieutenant colonel in the army identified in message exchanges with Bolsonaro's former aide Mauro Barbosa Cid)

  • Jair Bolsonaro (former president of the Republic, former deputy, former councilman of Rio de Janeiro and captain of the Army Reserve)

  • José Eduardo de Oliveira e Silva (priest of the Osasco diocese)

Imagine being this fucking stupid lol

  • Laercio Vergililo (a reserve general involved in an alleged coup plot)

  • Marcelo Bormevet (federal police officer suspected of being part of the illegal espionage scheme known as “parallel Abin (Brazil's CIA, Bolsonaro attempted to create his own CIA to spy on the Deferal Police)”)

  • Marcelo Costa Câmara ( reserve colonel and former advisor to ex-president Jair Bolsonaro)

  • Mario Fernandes (former number 2 in the General Secretariat of the Presidency, reserve general and Bolsonaro's trusted man. He is suspected of participating in a group that planned the deaths of Lula, Alckmin and Moraes)

  • Mauro Cid, former presidential aide, lieutenant colonel in the army (removed from office)

  • Nilton Diniz Rodrigues (Army general suspected of taking part in coup plot)

  • Paulo Renato de Oliveira Figueiredo Filho (businessman and grandson of former dictator João Figueiredo)

Literal failson

  • Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira (former defense minister, reserve general and former army commander)

  • Rafael Martins de Oliveira (lieutenant colonel and member of the 'black kids' group)

  • Ronald Ferreira de Araujo Junior (Army lieutenant colonel)

  • Sergio Ricardo Cavaliere de Medeiros (lieutenant colonel who was part of the “nucleus of disinformation and attacks on the electoral system”)

  • Tércio Arnaud Tomaz (former advisor to Bolsonaro and considered one of the pillars of the so-called “hate cabinet”, owner of the facebook page “Bolsonaro Opressor” who gained visibility. He used it to attack, through memes, the opponents of the then federal deputy, as well as praising Bolsonaro.)

  • Valdemar Costa Neto (president of PL (Liberal Party), the party for which Jair Bolsonaro and Braga Netto contested the 2022 elections)

  • Walter Souza Braga Netto (former Minister of Defense and candidate for Bolsonaro's vice-president in 2022, army reserve general)

It seems like this "Letter to the Army Commander from Senior Officers of the Active and Brazilian Army” is the coup draft they would have read after they took over the goverment.

Argentina snubs G20 summit launch of Brazil's global anti-hunger alliance

*Argentina the only G20 country not to sign up to a global anti-hunger initiative set to be launched at the opening of leaders summit in Brazil. *

Argentina was the only G20 country not to sign up to a global anti-hunger initiative set to be launched at the opening of a G20 summit in Rio, host Brazil said Monday. The decision by Argentina – led by President Javier Milei – deepens a political gap between the nation and neighbouring Brazil, whose left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is championing the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

A total of 81 countries signed on to the flagship initiative – including 18 of the 19 nations in the G20 – but Argentina was not among them, according to a communiqué. Its membership is "under negotiation," a source in the Brazilian Presidency told the AFP news agency.

The Global Alliance is an ambitious initiative pushed by Lula, a former steel-worker. It aims to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2030 and reduce inequality. Milei and Lula, whose countries share a border, have had a tense relationship even prior to the Argentine's election last year.

An ally of US president-elect Donald Trump, Milei has imposed radical austerity measures in Argentina to bring down high inflation. The policies sent the poverty rate in the country soaring to 52.9 percent in the first half of this year, 11 percentage points higher than in the previous six-month period.

Milei was the first world leader to see Trump after the Republican's win in the US presidential election. He attended a gala at the Republican's Mar-a-Lago Florida estate last Thursday.

The Argentine leader has several times labeled Lula a "communist" and "corrupt."

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty also has the support of international organizations such as the European Union and the African Union – both G20 members – as well as financial institutions and NGOs, bringing the total number of signatories to 147. The initiative's goal is ambitious: to reduce world hunger, which affected 733 million people last year – nine percent of the global population – according to the UN.

For Lula, who grew up in poverty before a trade unionist and eventually president of Latin America's biggest economy, the initiative is dear to his heart. At a national level, his left-wing policies have already lifted millions of Brazilians out of poverty.

I sometimes don't even know what they're trying to achieve. Hunger good I guess? It's even worse when we consider that these global programs never really have impact on the matter, because hunger and poverty are essential to Capitalism, but still they have to signal that any kind of movement towards improvement, no matter how insignificant, must be squashed. Just sign the fucking thing you pathetic motherfucker.

General notice: looking for new news mods. If you're interested, go to the thingy Carcosa posted and fill out a mod application.

I'll generally prefer newshead regulars who are temperate, thoughtful, and generally deliberative in their nature.

Generally speaking the role mostly involves reminding/censuring you nerds to include CWs and/or NSFWs to news posts whenever you forget to do so, telling people to knock off their bickering if they argue with each other and use the report button as an "I disagree with this person so you should smite them, and of course my personal favorite pastime of smiting the rare troll or bot that pops up to try and fling shit. If you can think of additional ways to help improve the general quality of the comm that will always be welcome, but generally speaking it's to help make sure there's more hands available in case me or carpy are busy doing things.

You'll still be held to equal standards to other newsheads. You lot have already seen how carpy and 72t, may he rest in power, behave here. That's the standard I'd like to see kept.

(P.s that offer also extends to the other comms I mod.)

(P.p.s I know 72 is still here. And yes, he's always welcome to come back so don't even think of doing a cheeky "I nominate 72t as new comm mod!")

(P.p.p.s: PigPoopBalls. That is all.)

With Russia's missile strike last night involving an ICBM or IRBM with a conventional payload, there has been a lot of talk about the potential nuclear threat or nuclear capabilities. Which is valid of course, such weapons usually carry nuclear warheads.

However, I managed to find this interesting quote from 2012 from Sergey Karakaev, commander of the Russian strategic missile forces, on the development and construction of Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) or Conventional Prompt Global Strike (CPGS) weapons. Such weapons are intended to deliver a precision guided conventional weapons strike anywhere on the globe, within an hour from launch. It is a capability that the US in particular has been pursuing since the Bush Jr administration, first looking to convert a Trident SLBM to a conventional payload, and then on the development of hypersonic weapons. This caused tensions between Obama and Putin in 2013. Anyways, here is the quote from Sergey Karakaev from 2012.

In addition, according to Sergey Karakaev, commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, a liquid fuelled rocket, with its greater payload potential, will allow Russia "to realize such opportunities as the creation of high precision strategic weapons with non-nuclear warheads and a practically global range".

Russia can create non-nuclear, high precision weapons based on intercontinental rockets in the event that the USA also works on designing such a weapon", Karakaev points out.

It seems as if Russia has demonstrated this capability. This existence and deployment of this potential CPS system by Russia changes a lot of calculations around escalation in a potential NATO - Russia conflict.

From videos and pictures of the strike, which I'll post below in a spoiler tag, we can see six seperate re-entries into the earth's atmosphere, and each re-entry contains multiple submunitions, based on screenshots of the video, about six submunitions per re-entry event. So six re-entries with 6 submunitions each, for 36 hits total. That's quite a payload if it came from one missile. If being the keyword.

The Romanian presidential election is coming up this Sunday, as far as I am aware nobody here has said a single thing about it so far and I must say it's probably better that way. While many romanians love to make fun of the US and how much of a charade its "democracy" is I genuinely believe Romania might have the most stagnant political scene and the most transparently undemocratic "democracy" in Europe. There are 14 candidates and they all either range from center-right to George "i-am-adolf-hitler" Simion.

@RomCom1989@hexbear.net tovarăș, what are your thoughts on this upcoming election? That is if you have any, I would not blame you if you didn't, this country's internal politics are so stagnant and geopolitically irrelevant I didn't even know an election was happening until someone told me about it yesterday.

Right winger got arrested in Algeria upon arrival: (used google translate with some corrections)

Sansal, a puppet of the anti-Algerian revisionist movement [Arabic]

Algeria - The comical uproar raised by some French political and intellectual circles over the case of Boualem Sansal is further evidence of the existence of a “hateful” movement against Algeria. It is a lobby that does not miss any opportunity to question Algerian sovereignty.
The arrest of Boualem Sansal, the alleged intellectual revered by the French far right, has also awakened the professionals of indignation. The anti-Algerian and pro-Zionist names in Paris have risen up as one man: Eric Zemmour, Mohamed Sifaoui, Marine Le Pen, Xavier Driencourt, Valéry Pécras, Jack Lang, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, and of course Tahar Ben Jelloun, his Moroccan friend who is recovering from sciatica from bending over to kiss the hand of his King Mohammed VI. They have all come to the forefront to defend this professional revisionist who has fallen into the trap of his own doing.

rest of the articleIt is worth noting that this spiteful lobby has had a bad week and they must be understood. First, one of their proteges, Kamel Daoud, was caught red-handed exploiting the suffering of a victim of terrorism in Algeria in order to win the Goncourt Prize. Then came the turn of their friend and genocidaire, Netanyahu, who was subjected to an international arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court. Finally, Gallimard’s other writer, Sansal, was arrested in the midst of his revisionist rampage. Incidentally, the writer Wasini Laredj had accused Sansal of plagiarizing the title and story of his novel “2084 (2084 : la fin du monde)”
Apparently, in the group of plagiarism and distortion, France Publishing has chosen its Algerian followers well.
The naturalized citizen, Eric Zemmour, in support of his "friend" Boualem Sansal, said that "the French government must demand his immediate release". As for President Macron, returning from a vacation in Brazil where he described the Haitians as "idiots" (as usual, of course!), he expressed his "deep concern". Macronist-Zionist France denounces Sansal's arrest (at Algiers airport), but it has not told the world whether it has the necessary sovereignty to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu if he sets foot at Charles de Gaulle airport! Since Paris speaks of law and human rights, compliance with international law in Netanyahu's case could be a good start.
France under Macron is no stranger to contradictions. This president, who speaks of “crimes against humanity” in Algeria regarding French colonialism, acknowledges the historical recognition of the state assassinations of Ali Boumendjel, Maurice Audin and Larbi Ben M’hidi, and instructs his ambassador to lay a wreath on the grave of our martyr, is the same one who defends a denier that questions the existence of Algeria, its independence, its history, its sovereignty and its borders!
Wouldn't it be more appropriate for France, which enacts memory laws every time, especially when it comes to anti-Semitism (the Gayssot Act), to condemn Sansal for trying to deny the existence of the Algerian nation? This might be a good subject for study and negotiation for Benjamin Stora!
Ultimately, with every wave of hostility against Algeria, Paris accuses Algeria of all evil, while Algeria always acts according to the principle of consistency. Accusing Algeria of blocking freedom of expression while the French are still holding Pavel Durov, founder of the Telegram application, the global platform for expression, is nothing but confirmation of this evil play, in which Sansal is only the appropriate puppet.

The article is from the Algerian Press Service, which is owned by the Algerian government, no their articles aren't like this usually.

More funny shit from the failed assassination attempt against Lula da Silva, Geraldo Alckmin (VP, probably known for posting Wojak and other memes on his twitter account) and Supreme Court Judges Alexandre de Moraes (The one that fucked with Elon Musk) and Flavio Dino (Brazilian Communist Party Member and Former Governor). They were using their whatsapp group (yes, they were using this shit to plot a coup), they named their group "Copa 2022", to pretend it was a World Cup group but also because Copa sounds like Coup. Coup 2022. Holy fucking shit these people are fucking stupid, they fucking had a document with the whole coup only changing some of the names of people they wanted to kill/arrest, they left the files on the printer, and the printer was literally inside Lula's Office (which was Bolsonaro's office before). No fucking wonder they couldn't do shit, and the US/CIA was against this.
