Does anyone know of communities where the posts are many paragraphs of OC selftext with the comments discussing it? I don't really care what the content is, but that's for format I'm looking for. So far it's just links, cat pics, and memes...

[–] Tots@lemmy.world 37 points 1 year ago

Agreed! I loved communities like AITA, relationship advice, etc... on Reddit.

[–] Madbrad200@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago

Lemmy is still in that early link aggregator stage, Reddit was like this too for awhile.

as the saying goes, be the change you wish to see...

You may want to check out tildes.net -- great community, totally text focused experience. I find that tildes complements lemmy well, and end up on both (in addition to a few other sites) to get a well rounded aggregation/discussion experience.

You'll probably need to wait a bit for those, or else start one.

People were willing to write that kind of stuff on Reddit because they knew people would see it. Possibility of attention incentivizes people to put the work in.

Here...not so much. Less incentive to put effort into big text posts without more people. Lemmy's less than perfect sorting for Hot or Active is helping much either.

That's kind of how Reddit was at first, too. All of this will take shape eventually it's just not here quite yet.

Best of redditor updates was my favorite of these, even if most of them were probably made up.

Shameless plug for my community !patientgamers@sh.itjust.works which I think is quite neat. Best gaming community imo

[–] JingJang@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is a great community.

The Lemmy community is far better than the subreddit

Almost any community named "cat" or "dog". People should post more pictures of their happy non-human family.

Please. I need a way to break up the solid pages of awful global news in my feed, and I haven't got any of my own to hug.

edited to add: here's a list of cat communities , if there are other lists for other animals let me know.

Some other animal communities I subscribe to (not exhaustive):

And I’m doing my part!

[–] fiat_lux@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

So sweet. Please spread the joy to your choice of cat community too!

I appreciate you. All three of you. And I really like the sunflower scratching post too!

My fiancΓ© got it, as she loves sunflowers. And we appreciate you too!

I've been trying my best at getting !superbowl@lemmy.world going. It needs more activity, I can only photograph so many owls!

I didn't need to block communities when I first started lemmy, but then predictably became necessary as time passed so went block crazy and now feed is easier again to try and find intersting communities when browsing all over news agregators.

[–] fiat_lux@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That's the thing though, I do want to know about the topics and events, they're important and have huge consequences. But previously I was relying on nice things from communities I enjoy hearing from to space the more painful content out.

I have learnt that nice content requires a lot more activity if it stands a chance against the sheer volume of news created. But I also know there are lots of people here who have nice content to share that would benefit us all.

Why do people block communities instead of using the subscribed feed? It feels like too much work. Did people really browse /r/all or the front page of reddit that much? That sounds like a nightmare. No wonder people complained about the mass of low effort posts. You're subjecting yourself to them.

[–] NightOwl@lemmy.one 8 points 1 year ago

People are trying to find new communities to subscribe to. New has been a good way to find them.

As for Reddit that's what amazing browser extensions like RES and third party browsers like RiF were for to filter out content by blocking subs, keywords, urls, and flairs, which made /r/all a pretty pleasant experience over default.

With the death of reddit, the only thing i mourned was the loss of r/196 but now I have 196@lemmy.blahaj.zone

[–] quaff@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’ve been seeing this in the All section… what is it?

[–] seliaste@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It is a meme community that is LGBT oriented and left-leaning

[–] quaff@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago

Ahhh this makes a lot of sense! Thank you πŸ™

I see we're all shilling the communities we mod, which makes sense if you think about it. So in that vein:

For more gamedev-related communities we've got a sticky post here, and for more crafting communities of all shapes and sizes there's one here!

Apart from those I've been hanging around in !ukcasual@lemmy.world since both my and its very first day here on Lemmy. Like the name suggests, basically just casual UK chatter without the scourge of politics. Lots of moaning about the weather.

!discworld@lemmy.ml could do with more Pratchett fans finding it, it's been pretty dead for the last month (not entirely surprising though as the subreddit wasn't huge either).

And another shoutout to !anarchychess@sopuli.xyz because LOL.
