Can you effectively learn Chinese on RedNote? Because my Duolingo is dead. I'm hoping this is an interactive form of language teaching.

Also, lmk if you learn Chinese off certain YouTube channels.

[–] NotLuigi@hexbear.net 1 points 4 hours ago

There are a lot of Chinese lessons on there but I’m starting up Duolingo myself

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 day ago

I'm in Poland so the TikTok ban won't affect me, but I'm there to keep in touch with some good yanks (rare breed) and see what the app's about (so far it's been good, it's a bit like TikTok but calmer and more comfy)

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 101 points 1 day ago

Tiktok gets banned

everyone goes to a Chinese social media called "Little Red Book"

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 65 points 1 day ago (1 children)

America taking the Great Firewall for granted is actually going to be very very funny.

A lot of Americans are about to find out very quickly that life in China is not anything like what they were told it’s like, and that the people of China actually like and support their government.

[–] Des@hexbear.net 59 points 1 day ago (1 children)

geordi-no leftists: "President Xi lower your firewall and let Chinese people flood the western 'net!"

geordi-yes everyone: "actually let us in please the western net is terrible and we hate it"

[–] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 33 points 1 day ago

Funny how the tables turn

[–] sempersigh@hexbear.net 87 points 1 day ago (1 children)

American politicians playing whack a mole with Chinese apps in a desperate attempt to make us use instagram instead is the funniest possible outcome I’m here for it

[–] BabyTurtles@hexbear.net 50 points 1 day ago

God it's so fucking funny because it might even have worked a little bit, if Zucker didn't go on Joe Rogan and start all out pandering to MAGA culture war chuds.

He is so detached from reality, he has no fucking clue what's going on. He saw Trump win and he thought homophobia and transphobia are back on the table, when the average normal person does not give a shit about LGBTQ+ people, they just to afford the basic necessities of living, and out of the downward spiral of status quo.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I saw someone post this lmao, their posting power is too much

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's very funny how Trump memes confuse some of the TikTok libs. susie-laugh

[–] buh@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago

xiaohongshu has the juice

[–] sexywheat@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have only one question: can you disable autoplay?

[–] khizuo@hexbear.net 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

i’ve browsed xiaohongshu for a while now and i find this so funny lol

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I keep getting videos of dongbei food and I'm quite tempted to get a train from Wuhan sometime this week.

[–] khizuo@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My feed seems to like showing me Guizhou food.

[–] Krem@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

Guizhou food is another level. heavenly ferments. stinky tofu with stinks you have never smelt before. fermented hot sauce. sour soup (not black vinegar sour soup like in the north, fermented sour). deep fried tofu balls. rice noodle rolls. rice tofu (a kind of liangfen). a ton of coriander on everything (nice). a ton of zheergen on everything (wtf). laoguo. rice wine. 10/10 up there with sichuan and yunnan food for weird hot funky shit

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

I’ve browsed xiaohongshu for about 12 hours and I find it funny as well :)

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 41 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Downloaded RedNote, pretty entertaining so far

[–] HexaSnoot@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So far do you find the content better in quality than TikTok?

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hard to say. I have my TikTok feed set up pretty nicely; TikTok is far worse with a blank-slate algorithm than it could be with some tuning.

Right now there is a ton of English content on RedNote which might not last past the initial wave. The UI is very similar but not exactly the same. I’ve also noticed a few videos that would never fly on TikTok. For example, I would never see casual transphobia on my TikTok feed, but I just saw a video that

CW transphobiamade fun of a trans man who said he was gay, saying “isn’t that just being straight?”

so it actually makes me appreciate some of the rare social progress that American social media culture does embody. But on a better note, I’ve seen a lot of funny videos, a lot of super welcoming Chinese, and a lot of Chinese lesson videos. Oh and various thirst traps but what’s new lol.

Looking forward to US news media reactions to the trend!

[–] khizuo@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yeah, xhs does have some problems when it comes to casual bigotry and unchallenged reactionary biases. I actually hope that the leftist stuff on American social media like being against casual colorism and fatphobia bleeds over.

Edit: removed “cultural left” and the quotes because that implies that the issues of fatphobia and colorism don’t materially harm people, which they do on a daily basis. I shouldn’t have trivialized the issues like that.

Edit 2: I don’t want to imply that Chinese social media is uniquely bad about any of those issues, transphobia/colorism/fatphobia are rampant on Western social media and also I tend to find that Chinese social media is a lot… nicer? Like people generally won’t go onto a post just to post something transphobic like they might on Instagram, and you don’t have open fascists running around propagandizing.

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Makes me wonder if in fact China is prepared for this level of cultural intrusion by Western audiences. So much of the focus has been on how China is allegedly trying to propagandize the West, yet Westerners are very much invading a Chinese space — and are being welcomed, but still.

[–] khizuo@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think it will be fine, I highly doubt Chinese posters will just roll over and let Westerners take over the app and completely change it. Things are pretty hectic rn but I’ll wait to see how things settle down.

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lotta swastikas! Mostly historical/educational but that was interesting

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 1 points 16 hours ago

Yeah I do keep getting recommended weird Nazi cosplay, art, and symbology, so be aware if you want to dip a toe into xhs

[–] miz@hexbear.net 47 points 2 days ago (1 children)

starting to feel like this ban is going to backfire big time

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago

Banning things that lead to blowback seems to be the US Empire's forte.

[–] LoremIpsum@hexbear.net 33 points 1 day ago (3 children)

One of my friends is worried that with all the Americans coming in, they might require XHS to split into domestic and international apps. Which would suck for the Chinese citizens who are working overseas, like them, who like the mix of stuff from home and from the international Chinese communities.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

Apparantly the CEO of the app said he welcomes the US tiktok refugees. So hopefully things will be cool

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I thought they were already split?

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

According to my scrolling so far, only TikTok is split, and xhs is one big feed.

[–] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

Who is they, the CPC or the US? I assume the latter but

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 33 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The first video I opened was an AI modified video of Luigi as Chad

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

[–] ProletarianDictator@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It took me a while but I found it:

[–] LibsEatPoop@hexbear.net 37 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I just came across this on my fyp! Not Amerikan so don’t need to dl RedNote but I just might cuz a) my country might just ban TikTok too, were the biggest us simps there are, b) who knows what’ll happen to my TikTok w/o all the Amerikans, and c) it does look fun lol.

I do want there to be like genuinely magnitudes more people to transfer tho. Like, if the ban fucking goes through, let there be 50-100 million people on RedNote and not a single fucking person on IG or yt or whatever. Fuck them.

[–] DeathToBritain@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

Im British but got rednote too because like honestly, na I do not want tik tok to just be british, aussie, and EU. theres a lot of funny Americans

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 43 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

trump-who-must-go People are moving to REDnote? Wow... I didn't know that, I just, you're telling me that for the first time. /s

So, is it just another Instagram replacement with video? Are there creators from TikTok on the platform that you recognize? It's interesting to me that Lemon8 has been pushing its integration with Tiktok with this ban looming. My understanding is that Lemon8/Bytedance has even paid creators on TikTok to share Lemon8 and how to import your account and subscriptions to the platform. My understanding is this law potentially would prevent Lemon8 from operating in the US as well. It makes me wonder if Bytedance/TikTok know something we don't.

I opened up Google Play and lol these trending searches. It would appear people are looking for any available ship at the port.

[–] NotLuigi@hexbear.net 39 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Nope. Almost all of the English language content I’ve seen is about being a TikTok refugee and attempting to make dialogue with Chinese users. There’s a lot of comradery and honest discussion, honestly. There’s also the occasional MAGA loser but those are generally reported and mocked from what I’m seeing.

Edit: nevermind, CrutchesAndSpice is over there now doing an AMA about disability!

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 21 points 1 day ago

Definitly going to give it a try.
