They added a translate feature in the last couple days so you should be able to automatically let the app translate comments in-line

If you don't have that version of the app yet, an image translator works. Someone was saying there's an on-screen translation option for android devices in another thread, not sure about ios.

I had to force the update but wow its actually really good! Its exactly what people were saying, that they were going to add translation. Very cool.

Weird according to my phone it’s up to date but I don’t have translation

[–] hexbee@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

I think the feature is being enabled for more and more people in a staggered manner to make sure it's working well for everyone

Go to your profile, go to the gear, go to the next gear, go to language & translation, turn on auto - translation.

I'm on app version 8.59.1 on Android.

Update the app, go to language settings, and enable the translation feature. Android can also translate if you select the text, and then select translate from the popup menu, though maybe not on all devices.

Or learn Chinese.

Or learn Chinese

This is a good option too, but I think it's going to take a while to pay off. I can accurately respond to a question about my nationality now, but that's about it for the moment.

It is slow going, definitely. But keep at it! Eventually you'll realise that you can string together some pretty solid sentences.

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

Thanks for the encouragement! I absolutely will keep at it.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Ok let me just Matrix that shit.

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago

Just remember: your neck ports need to be 1tbps capable to download Chinese skills

There is a Google Translate app that can be called up by long pressing the middle button. That's what I mostly used previously but the translate button is great now for reading in all.

I still use the full screen translator quite a bit because it will translate images

[–] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

Yeah, I also use it sometimes to translate multiple shorter comments all at once.

[–] whogivesashit@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 months ago

Yeah should just need to update your app

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

If you are on an android device, hold down the home button and google assistant will offer to translate the page.

[–] niph@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

Learn Chinese

Jk I think the translate option for comments is already being rolled out, I’ve seen some screenshots

If you’re on iPhone these videos will show you how to set up both translate-screen and translate-clipboard shortcuts and how to activate them easily. That’s what I did so if I double tap the back of my phone it’ll translate the screen to English, and triple tapping translates whatever’s in my clipboard to Chinese. It’s super nice.

Pull up the Google assistant -> translate screen
