Or anything that can scrape the whole thread into some external file or representation? Even json would be fine

Maybe something that caches it or something. Seems to be how videos can be saved, hopefully works for text-based stuff altho their API is probably an obstacle maybe

You can turn any webpage into a PDF by triggering the print dialog (Ctrl+P) and then selecting "Save to PDF" as the printer.

Well, I commented here and linked to a Reddit thread earlier:

https://old.reddit.com/r/AskAcademia/comments/1dkeiwz/is_genz_really_this_bad_with_computers/

Let's see what happens if we slap a .json extension on it.

https://old.reddit.com/r/AskAcademia/comments/1dkeiwz/is_genz_really_this_bad_with_computers.json

That looks kind of like it. I have no idea if it has limitations of one sort or another.

Very freaking cool! What do you think would be the best way to view it or render it to best replicate the format of tapping and collapsing or at least being able to easily puruse all the main parent/top-level comments?

I assume you mean offline? Because if it’s online, just open the reddit url in a browser.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Have you tried reader mode in your browser?

For example, here’s the steps on a Mac using Safari (but other browsers like Firefox also have a reader view).

  • open Reddit thread in browser
  • sort comments
  • choose view as reader
  • choose file > print
  • click save as PDF

You might get better print results by viewing the page from old.reddit.com instead of Reddit.com.

Faster steps:

Kbd shortcut for Reader mode: cmd-shift-r Kbd shortcut for print: cmd-p

Good tip about the old.reddit tweak, doesnt effect the Reader mode thing tho. Reddit just shows their anti-spam thing

Hope that is what you are looking for.

You should probably ask this on Reddit

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why is that, it is a valid question

[–] oo1@lemmings.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep; unless valid means open ended, thought provoking, ends with "?" and not support.

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That is pedantism. The abstract principal is of far more importance. Someone asking about how to scrape a website is a common topic. Bashing people for making use of Lemmy is toxic nonsense.

[–] oo1@lemmings.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, for a tech support community, like the one linked in the related communities box.

What's the point of all that toxic nonsense down the right hand side of the page ?

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Narcissistic fodder. They are guidelines. Community always comes first. Mods serve the community not the other way around. Those that fail to follow this rule should never be mods; they do it for the wrong reasons. Every mod action causes harm and the reason for actions should be clearly in the best interests of the whole community in every instant where actions are taken. Community rules are for building community, therefore the community always comes first. If the community pushes in some new direction and engages, the rules should change. The users own the community they post in. Mods serve that community. Narcissistic authoritarianism has no place in this democracy. Anyone with those tendencies should be purged. The only community that a mod can ever own is the one only they have ever posted within.
