She was on par (or better) than all her 90’s indy rock contemporaries. The “novice” criticisms were 100% because she’s a woman.

I don’t know that I agree that they are 100% because she is a woman. There aren’t that many bands from the 90s indie rock or early 2000 rock where a layman is going to know the name of the drummer. I think one of the things with the white stripes being a two person band was everyone knew Jack and Meg White, if you knew who the white stripes were. And then their biggest hits that got radio playtime, seven nation obviously and dead leaves on the dirty ground have relatively simple sounding drums. I think anyone who actually listened to the catalog from the band would not have those criticisms. But if you only know the radio hits 🤷🏻‍♂️.

I enjoyed the White Stripes a lot when I was younger, and I’ve never really enjoyed any of jacks other bands as much.

I agree with this. Unfortunately it was mostly because she's a woman. But it's also because she hits towards the end of the window of each beat. To a lot of people that makes it sound like she's late or that her timing is wrong. But technically that's not accurate. It's the same problem Ringo Starr had. He got a lot of shit for the same thing, but he was also a good drummer.

ETA: I freakin' love the stuff he made with the Raconteurs. Their first album was a bit hit or miss, but the next two have been great IMO. But definitely a different sound from the White Stripes.

I thought The Raconteurs were ok, but the Dead Weather really got my attention.

But it's Meg's vicious groove that gives Seven Nation Army that power.

'If you can't beat them... criticize them.'

It was because she (seemingly) had troubles keeping steady time and plays with rudimentary techniques...as an amateur drummer does. Nothing to do with being a woman.

nothing to do with it?

I have no clue about music, so I can't say if she's good or bad or whatever. But I do enjoy her music, and that's all that counts for me.

I always love Drumeo's "Drummer plays song they've only heard once" videos.

Heard a time or three, but without the drums.
