Canada has the means to win this stupid trade war, partly because they aren't idiots who started trade wars with the rest of their allies.

Soo, we get the US tariffed aluminium and steel from Canada then?

[–] schema@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The U.S. lacks the production capacity to meet domestic demand for steel and aluminum, else imports wouldn’t be necessary. I.e. domestic aluminum only covered about 15% of demand in 2024

With a 50% tariff, businesses relying on these materials will still have to import, but at much higher costs.

Trump believes this will boost domestic production, and even if that was true it would take years. However, in reality, it will likely reduce consumption due to skyrocketing prices, leading to lower demand, layoffs, and eventually recession.

The 1920s are calling.

[–] Redditsux@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Aluminum requires a ton of cheap electricity/energy to produce. Which certain provinces in Canada have abundance of, along with the ore. Production isn't going to US because he put tariffs.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 135 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Russian agent in White House put tariff on Aluminum from neighboring very hostile country Canada, and plans to get it very cool and very legal from Russia instead.
The Russian agent has allegedly been identified, but Americans have decided it's OK to have Russian agents in the White House now.

What really concerns me, is that even here in Germany i hear people saying "eh, Trump is ok, at least he's doing something".

It's not only a few that think like this and it's always the same people that are anti vaccine, anti trans rights, anti woke.

I don't like this timeline anymore, but the reset button isn't working...

[–] Tujio@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It was pretty eye-opening when I was in Germany and Austria a couple years ago and heard people parroting the EXACT right-wing taking points I hear in the States.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are always the 10% idiots, unfortunately AfD somehow got 20% of the vote.
The people who love fascism think it's their chance now. But they are mistaken. Europe is not giving in to that again.

[–] kava@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

But they are mistaken. Europe is not giving in to that again.

how do you have so much faith? if you look at the Nazi elections it went something like

~2.5% ⇒ ~5% ⇒ 10% ⇒ 20% ⇒ 30something% ⇒ dictatorship

if you look at AfD it's following s similar pattern and we're currently at 20something%

Looking at past history, just one more successful election cycle and the far-right can consolidate and eliminate any democratic opposition

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 39 minutes ago)

I'm guessing by Nazi elections you are referring to the pre WW2 elections, where the NSDP took power without a majority.

The difference now in for instance Germany is that AfD is by far most popular in a small segment of the country. And even if AfD get 30% they will not be able to take exclusive control, probably not even be able to get into government.

I agree it's worrying that AfD is so popular, and it does indicate a problem in Germany that needs to be addressed.
My guess is they are popular because the former East Germany part feel overlooked, and that too many resources are used on refugees/immigrants.
Something Denmark has warned about on a European scale for more than a decade.
We simply haven't figured out a working framework to keep receiving more and more immigrants from non Western countries, for a variety of reasons.
And the worst off in society believe they are the ones to foot the bill, because the poor don't get much share in our increased wealth. But the truth is most of our increased wealth is going to those that already have more than they need.

We need to for instance stop giving more tax benefits to the rich, and have a better balance in how the wealth of our society is distributed. Fascism sucks at doing that, but without an alternative on the left, that's where the protest votes will go. Because they promise to "solve" what the less well off perceive to be a huge part of the problem.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Where in Germany did you hear that junk? Somewhere in the east?

[–] kamenlady@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

In Cologne of all places ...

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As an american, a slight correction.

Read Next: about 40% of Americans puzzled about why nobody likes them anymore. Another 40% puzzled about why anyone still likes them. 20% didn't understand the question, and refused to elaborate.

[–] brrt@lemm.ee 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The second 40% is puzzled why Russia likes them? Do they life under a stone or stmh?

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I think you've misunderstood who the everyone else is - its the rest of the world, not Russia.

[–] brrt@lemm.ee 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Dude do you think in Arabic countries anyone beside Israel & in Europe anyone besides Russia likes Amerika nowadays? You can go on with South America and Afrika & Australia. Now how many countries may like you at the time?

[–] curbstickle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

There are people yes, and thats kind of the point of the comment...

[–] brrt@lemm.ee 1 points 17 minutes ago

Didn't get you were talking about individuals.

[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Just sanction the US. Cut them off completely. That's what, they want, isn't it?

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Build a dome, build a dome.

[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

And let the Americans pay or it.

[–] teawrecks@sopuli.xyz 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Did the article change out from under you? This title is now literally the opposite of the actual article's title: "Trump halts doubling of tariffs on Canadian metals after Ontario suspends electricity price hikes"

[–] Shuilishu@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 4 hours ago

The problem with Lemmy and the current administration: the POTUS wallfles faster than the algorithm can keep up. (Intentionally so! I like that Lemmy's algorithm discourages doom scrolling)

[–] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago

Hurry, grab more gasoline! This fire isn't going to put itself out!

[–] MataVatnik@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

It's like shooting yourself in the dick to hurt the other person

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Well, just double the tarrifs on electricity to 50%, too.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 3 points 20 hours ago

Turn it off.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

His responses sound like robotic Civilization responses. Canada is a high tariff nation because of you dumbass.

“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump posted Tuesday on Truth Social.

[–] bane_killgrind@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He's getting the US into a sriracha situation for sure

[–] mos@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm so curious, what do you mean?

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

IIRC Sriracha had an exclusive provider for their peppers as they provided a unique taste to it. The company then decided to demand lower prices from the farmers causing them to have a falling out. The sauce was unavailable for a long while and when it was brought back it no longer tasted the same, at least IMO. I still eat it occasionally but not as much as before.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Is THAT why the flavor is so different now??? I never knew! I used to love Sriracha but now it tastes synthetic and unpleasant.

[–] ysjet@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Iirc the guy that farmed the original sirracha peppers makes his own hot sauce now with them after the falling oot- tastes exactly like the old sirracha, just under a different name.

[–] yukichigai@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 21 hours ago

Yep. Underwood Ranches. You can buy it from their site directly or on Amazon. It's good stuff.

[–] bane_killgrind@slrpnk.net 2 points 20 hours ago

Yeah it's really fucking funny.

[–] bane_killgrind@slrpnk.net 2 points 19 hours ago

Yeah I'm imagining this falling out ends up with us offering another country good rates on purchasing our stuff.

[–] hansolo@lemm.ee 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And he'll rescind them all by this time tomorrow.

[–] randon31415@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

No, he rescinded the ones from February so that his base can go around saying "What tarrifs? He rescinded them," while simultaneously complaining about the retaliation tarrifs.

Basically MAGA thinks only Canada currently has tariffs on us.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

well he will find out that bullying countries is not the same as bullying students in college or bullying your white collars

[–] HamsterRage@lemmynsfw.com 9 points 1 day ago

We should drop the electricity surcharge to zero by cutting off the supply to the US entirely.

[–] mrsjmccrimmon@feddit.uk 11 points 1 day ago
[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Still too low, I think he should raise it to 100%! (/s) Anyway how is CPC's 30 point lead doing today? To shreds you say, tsk tsk tsk

[–] Kumasousa@lemmy.zip 2 points 23 hours ago

Where this stops, if it stops?

michael moore finally gets to make a sequel to canadian bacon.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

He's really helping things along with all these acts of stability, consistency, and predictability. Stuff businesses thrive on. Maybe the business world outside of the stock market (which the manipulation of is what this may all be about anyway) is just ignoring the day to day until something persists long enough to even get into the daily supply chain.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 3 points 1 day ago

This will lower your bills for sure.
